I left a MICROSOFT WORD CD in the player and shutdown, the next day I turn on the computer and the CD started up, and it has gone to black screen with cursor each time I start it now. I get 2 choices, F2 or F12. The 4 code lights on the back panel are all green indicating no problems, what can I try?

I first had this problem when I tried to do the first installation. When it would get to the part of the setup in windows mode, it would just keep rebooting. I was able to finally get it to finish installing, and it seemed to be working fine, untill I tried to make sure all my drivers, applications, and my cable internet conection were installed.

I have to hold the power button in until it forces a shutdown and then turn it back on to get the computer working. It then works fine until it happens all over again.Computer is running Windows XP SP2.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just run the automatic update on a dell dimension 4550, running WinXP with SP2. After the 'restart to apply' type message the PC is stuck in nan endless re-boot loop.
I have re-installed WinXP and rebooted, that is fine.I have reinstalled SP2 and re booted, that is fine.
The problem occoures only after applying the 72 autoupdates, after SP2 has been installed.
I haven't heard anything from my other post, so I thought I would make a new one. I am actually on the computer I was having problems with. I got my anti-virus loaded and ran, found 4 viruses. I also installed Ad-Aware, and Spybot S&D, and ran, keep finding spyware, especially one called Admess. I keep getting pop-ups saying that I have problems with regeristry files, and wants me to download some regeristry repairing software. I can't understand how this stuff was missed by the format?

Like the first time I had it working, I didn't have any problem with my internet connection, because the first thing I did was start downloading & installing the windows updates. When it was fiinished installing, and wanted to restart, I started having problems with it rebooting again.

I have not added any new hardware or software or any drivers recently. I can not start in safe mode. I have run windows XP home edition setup from the Dell XP installation disc. when I select either enter to setup windows XP or R to repair using the Recovery Console, I do not ger very far before I again get the blue screen message.

When I turn the computer on the Intel logo and BIOS 2 settings appear then the screen goes back with a flashing cursor at the top left of the screen . View 3 Replies View Relatedit all started when I ran Nod32 antivirus. I ran it because I had some viruses on my computer that I wanted to get rid of. After the scan there were 180 some detected objects that were quarantined or deleted. So then I restart my computer and after the windows xp logo there is just a black screen with no cursor. And after awhile the computer will just restart and try booting up again. I tried going into safe mode and safe mode with command prompt but I still get a black screen with no cursor. The last known good configuration doesn't work either. I'm pretty frustrated because I did nothing wrong. I am also having a feeling that nod32 might have quarantined some infected files that are essential for Windows Xp to boot. I also do not have any windows xp disks with me how to fix this?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI cannot boot my XP machine. In safe mode it also says safe mode in white text in each corner and shows windows build details at the top. I have trying going back to previous good config - same problem. A normal boot just leads to a black screen with a movable mouse arrow - no sign of a login screen. I have tried a recovery reinstall from a an XP pro CD from another computer - this took about 40 minutes and went through all the steps normally (with normal graphics displayed duting the reinstall) but after finishing the same problem is still there.
Only now the windows build info in sfae mode reports SP1 (originally didi not as the computer was supplied with XP before SP1) I am at a loss to know what to do to get the machine wordking without a refomat of the hard disk, whcih will destroy all my data, and my partners stuff too - mostly not backed up, as usual.
I am trying to reinstall my OS Windows XP but the BIOS device menu says to do it from the CD position 4 on the list of 7 options but nothing happens?
View 1 Replies View Relatedi have a dell deminsion 4550 i was given. it has a pentium 4 2. 4GHZ sounded like a good machine. nut it's not i wanted to put in a newer hard drive with xp pro just like the original and it won't boot. the original was 30GB the new is 40 (40 the max for the machine?) the origanal is from 2002 the new from 2005 both maxtor diamond max 3.5 series. there online support for sayed it wont work. i know i tried but this is wired becuse almost any other computer you can put in a hard drive and it will boot
View 23 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Dimension 8200 desktop running WinXP Home however It won't boot to the hard drive. I replaced the drive with a known working one and it still doesn't boot, says Diskette Drive 0 Not Found, however I figured that was referring to the floppy drive. Tried switching the ide cables around and that didn't work either. The power supply is working, as well as all of the fans. Its running a 1700mh processor. Cd-Rom works fine, and I can boot to a CD, I can browse the files if I boot to Knoppix, however it simply won't boot to the Hard Drive. I ran FixMbR and FixBoot in the recovery console, to no avail. Bios is configured properly, and I haven't touched the jumpers. Just to be sure I tried the hard drive in another system, and it wouldn't boot in that one either. Might be the mother board?
View 14 Replies View Relateda friend has a Dell Dimension 4550 (P4-2Ghz, 60Gb HDD, 784mb RAM- added 512mb and a NEC DVD+/-R, circa 2002 I think?) and needs to do a clean install. He has the CD that came with it. We looked all over google and the Dell site and can't seem to find out how to do a clean install. We pressed F12 and tried to boot from the CD-ROM and thought it was going to work, but it said that we were trying to install XP on a partition that already had XP on it. I saw no option for full/clean restore.

They called Dell and were told to take it to a technician, which I am not, and they cannot afford it.When turned on it showed the Dell logo and then asked for a password which they had no idea what it was. It would not do anything at all. After doing a lot of reading on this forum and others I decided to remove the password by changing the jumper on the motherboard that said ctr password for,30 seconds, and then putting it back in place and start the computer again.It then booted to a screen that said " We appologize for the inconvenience but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. After some more explaining of possible causes it had the options of starting in, Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Safe Mode with Networking, Last known good configeration, Start Windows normally. Use the up and down arrows to highlight your choice.When I do highlight any one of the choices and hit enter the computer stops responding at all.
I can now get in and check the system info etc. It showed no password. It also shows no cdrom installed and it has a cdrom and dvd. It only shows the hard drive and floppy drive. The hard drive is a Segate Barracuda 7200.7 80 Gbytes.I ran the diagnostics that are on the computer and everything checked out except the Read Test on the hard drive. It said IDE Disk Error Code 0F00.0244 Msg Block 77765935. Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected.I then tried to run a virus check from Fix-It Utilities on floppy. After the second disc it stopped and said it was unable to read drive c to restore boot area.Did I do something to the hard drive by removing the password and is there any way to check the hard drive for a virus? I don't understand why Dell told them to take it to a tech.
I am having a hard time with running a chkdsk/f I can not get to any other screen but that. I didnt not have a problem with this computer until the large battery went out on my surge protector and when I moved it to my husbands music room (because his computer got a virus) Upon start up it gives the the options to start up normal, safe mode ect. Well I dont know what to do...I believe the f drive is my 3.5 disc drive it is dusty inside there and blew some out, that did not help and then I unplugged it, no help with that either. Any suggestions will help as I am unable to figure out what to do.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAbout four months ago, I received a computer as a gift. However, about two weeks ago, while booting, I got a screen asking to run (I believe) a scan on my drives. After the scan was done, The computer completely shut down. When I tried to turn it back on, where the log in screen should be with the accounts on it, I had only a black screen, but I could see and move my cursor.I have done everything I could think of, tried to start in Safe Mode (same thing happened), tried to boot in Last Best Configuration(same), put hard drive in another computer and defragged it(No Results), and tried putting my Windows XP CD in to do a System Restore(Same thing happens). I don't really have very much on the computer, so a restore would not be too painful. Is there anything that I NEED to do when booting up with my XP disk to perform a restore?

It will boot upto the windows xp loading screen with the loading bar and then when it should move onto the log on screen it brings up a blank page with a small mouse cursor. When i boot it up in safe mode it comes up with a bigger mouse cursor. I have tried pressing control alt delete and buttons like space bar to see if they work but still nothing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMachines were running fine until someone took out a power pole down the road.When power resumed, powered my machines back up. 2 out of 3 did OK. The third goes immediately to a black screen with a flashing cursor in the upper corner.Have already:
1 removed and reseated the power and data cables from the hard drive
2 removed and reseated the RAM modules
3 tried pressing every F key on the keyboard
4 Cntl-Alt-Delete doesn't work either
5 tried on another monitor.
Don't even get to Windows splash screen or able to get to Safe Mode.
Friends laptop boots up to a blank/black screen with a movable mouse cursor and hangs right there. No keyboard commands work. System can only be shut down by holding power for 5 sec.I backed up her data, and did a windows repair via the installation disc.I was sure that was gonna fix it now i could use some suggestions. View 1 Replies View RelatedI turned on my laptop and received a blue screen that said "unmountable_boot_volume" and a some other info.I tried running the recovery off the XP cd and still yield the same blue screen.Then I repaired Windows XP Home Edition using a different part of the same cd.But now when I boot up I make it past the start up stuff and end up at what should be the login but instead is just a black screen w/ my cursor which I can move.I've tried ctrl alt deleting but nothing comes up.I've tried last good config but that does not help.Safe mode takes me to the black screen but now displays the Safe Mode crap in all 4 corners.
