I have just run the automatic update on a dell dimension 4550, running WinXP with SP2. After the 'restart to apply' type message the PC is stuck in nan endless re-boot loop.
I have re-installed WinXP and rebooted, that is fine.I have reinstalled SP2 and re booted, that is fine.
The problem occoures only after applying the 72 autoupdates, after SP2 has been installed.
i bought this dell demension 4550 used i turn it on it says to hit f12 to reboot i do that and it comes back to the same f12 reboot how do i fix this problem

I get 2 choices, F2 or F12. The 4 code lights on the back panel are all green indicating no problems, what can I try?

I was able to finally get it to finish installing, and it seemed to be working fine, untill I tried to make sure all my drivers, applications, and my cable internet conection were installed.

I haven't heard anything from my other post, so I thought I would make a new one. I am actually on the computer I was having problems with. I got my anti-virus loaded and ran, found 4 viruses. I also installed Ad-Aware, and Spybot S&D, and ran, keep finding spyware, especially one called Admess. I keep getting pop-ups saying that I have problems with regeristry files, and wants me to download some regeristry repairing software. I can't understand how this stuff was missed by the format?

Like the first time I had it working, I didn't have any problem with my internet connection, because the first thing I did was start downloading & installing the windows updates. When it was fiinished installing, and wanted to restart, I started having problems with it rebooting again.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi have a dell deminsion 4550 i was given. it has a pentium 4 2. 4GHZ sounded like a good machine. nut it's not i wanted to put in a newer hard drive with xp pro just like the original and it won't boot. the original was 30GB the new is 40 (40 the max for the machine?) the origanal is from 2002 the new from 2005 both maxtor diamond max 3.5 series. there online support for sayed it wont work. i know i tried but this is wired becuse almost any other computer you can put in a hard drive and it will boot
View 23 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Dimension 8200 desktop running WinXP Home however It won't boot to the hard drive. I replaced the drive with a known working one and it still doesn't boot, says Diskette Drive 0 Not Found, however I figured that was referring to the floppy drive. Tried switching the ide cables around and that didn't work either. The power supply is working, as well as all of the fans. Its running a 1700mh processor. Cd-Rom works fine, and I can boot to a CD, I can browse the files if I boot to Knoppix, however it simply won't boot to the Hard Drive. I ran FixMbR and FixBoot in the recovery console, to no avail. Bios is configured properly, and I haven't touched the jumpers. Just to be sure I tried the hard drive in another system, and it wouldn't boot in that one either. Might be the mother board?

I purchased a faster used Dell Dimension 8400 3.6ghz hyperthreading 3gb RAM with XP Pro on it.My question is simple. My Dimension 2400 has an IDE hard drive and the 8400 has SATA. Rather than spend days re-installing and tweaking all of the programs on the 8400 I tried the following. I used Acronis Easy Migrate 7 to Image the IDE hard drive to the SATA hard drive and installed it into the 8400. It would not boot, I tried a repair install, then while booting I get a blue screen stop Error 0x0000007B. What do I have to do to fix this so it will boot?
View 11 Replies View Relatedi have a dell dimension e520 with stock everything from dell (P4, 512mb ram) First i had about 70 virus's on the hd, so i removed them when the drive was installed in another machine.So then windows was damaged from the removal, and so i did a clean install (after format), and everything was peachy, (installed windows, ran windows, installed programs etc.) well until i removed the xp installation cd, then it says "boot device not found, press f1 to continue, f2 to reboot". Here is the weird part, when i put the cd back in, reboot, and don't press a key when the " press any key to boot from cd" message comes up it will boot fine. Goes right into windows, etc.In order to reinstall windows, i had to change an option in the bios from raid mode on the sata hd to ATA/autodetect option, because i was getting the bsod 0x0000007b error.The xp cd i used to reinstall was xp sp1 (one of the dell oem ones).I was able to install windows, install all drivers, install sp3 etc.Everything was fine, until i removed the cd and rebooted.I attempted to change the raid option back to original setting in the bios, and reboot- and i got the same message.The bottom line is- everything works fine when i boot with the xp install cd in the cdrom (and do not press a key when it asks to boot from cd). When i boot without the install cd, then acts like there is no os.I have to admit, i have fixed many computers in my day, and this is the first time i have come across this.Could it be something wrong with the sata controller on the motherboard?

I have not added any new hardware or software or any drivers recently. I can not start in safe mode. I have run windows XP home edition setup from the Dell XP installation disc. when I select either enter to setup windows XP or R to repair using the Recovery Console, I do not ger very far before I again get the blue screen message.

View 1 Replies View RelatedChecking computer for a friend. It is a Pentium 4 2.80GHz running windows xp, bios ver. A01, 512MB memory. They called Dell and were told to take it to a technician, which I am not, and they cannot afford it.When turned on it showed the Dell logo and then asked for a password which they had no idea what it was. It would not do anything at all. After doing a lot of reading on this forum and others I decided to remove the password by changing the jumper on the motherboard that said ctr password for,30 seconds, and then putting it back in place and start the computer again.It then booted to a screen that said " We appologize for the inconvenience but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. After some more explaining of possible causes it had the options of starting in, Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Safe Mode with Networking, Last known good configeration, Start Windows normally. Use the up and down arrows to highlight your choice.When I do highlight any one of the choices and hit enter the computer stops responding at all.
I can now get in and check the system info etc. It showed no password. It also shows no cdrom installed and it has a cdrom and dvd. It only shows the hard drive and floppy drive. The hard drive is a Segate Barracuda 7200.7 80 Gbytes.I ran the diagnostics that are on the computer and everything checked out except the Read Test on the hard drive. It said IDE Disk Error Code 0F00.0244 Msg Block 77765935. Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected.I then tried to run a virus check from Fix-It Utilities on floppy. After the second disc it stopped and said it was unable to read drive c to restore boot area.Did I do something to the hard drive by removing the password and is there any way to check the hard drive for a virus? I don't understand why Dell told them to take it to a tech.
My brother's computer froze so the only way i knew to turn it off was to uplug the power.. I did that and ever since then i cannot get the computer to boot up all the way it just gets stuck on the xp loading screen.. Ive tried starting in safe mode, normal mode, and "last know configuration that worked" mode.. When i boot from my boot disk i get into the window's console, i try and choose the repair option, when it lets me do this it asks for a "administrator password", i dont remeber using one when i installed windows. I know the "quick" fix is to do a complete reformat and install, but my brother has alot of work files that he does not want to loose. This is my brother's computer, i always make a backup disk of my files for this reason.. but he didnt so im stuck betweena rock and a hard place.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to fix this computer for the last 8 hours and I can't figure it out. I've narrowed it down to a system corruption, it's not hard, viruses or spyware, it's not anything but a corrupted windows installation.I will only image the drive at a last resort. I might just buy a second hard drive and install the OS and copy over the goods. Either way, I don't want to go though all that work. I know I can fix this.I had it working at one point, I did a Windows XP Setup into Repair mode, checked the disk and even went as far as created a second boot.ini - Just to eliminate a factor, that didn't work.What appeared to work was to "repair" the "corrupted windows installation" 3 or 4 times, and then do an "upgrade" and reactivate windows. I managed to get to a desktop, but then things just went downhill.
The icons where weird, and my "theme" was reset, and various other things. I created a new user in hope to start over, I was aimed at uninstalling things such as the vista transformation pack, etc.. Did a Windows Update, changed a few Driver letters so shortcuts worked, and then tried to "repair" the transofmation pack so i could uninstall it. I also did a Windows Update.Then I reboot, and my nightmare starts over again. Now I can't even get the damn upgrade/repair to work and it wont boot past mup.sys. If I just knew what file was corrupted or what was making the system hang I could rename/restore it and well you get the idea..Please HELP - I need this computer, it's got lots of client data and bleh bleh on it. I'm completely out of ideas and my mind is exhausted.
I don't really know where i should start so.well earlier today i installed a second hd in my computer to pull so files off of it for my sister and my mom, but when i got it working it said accsess was denied to there stuff i went on my moms computer to check if i hade already backed up there stuff of the old comp, so i go into her document to see if i could find the old documents and when i start scrolling through them the window freezes...so i leave it for a minute and while i'm waiting i close some other programs one of which was mozilla which was also frozen.I go back to the my document window and its still frozen.
I try to close it and of course its not responding so i click end now and it made the every thing disappear like the task bar and all the icons on the desktop are missing...so i wait and see if any thing will reappear and nothing does so i restart it and it starts booting up..the windows logo comes up and the little bars only gets half way across then it restarts and brings me to that menu where you can choose save mode or start normally and all that and no matter what i pick the comp just restarts and bring me back to the menu.
Installed SP3 today.The install seemed to go fine.Restarted the computer,now I am stuck in a boot loop computer starts, goes to the We apologies page.None of the load options work, computer simply shuts down and goes back to the same page. Since this computer was a Vista-ready computer,but I ordered it with Win XP Pro,I don't have the OEM Win XP Pro CD.Therefore, can't do a chkdsk.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm working on an IBM ThinkCenter Desktop PC.On bootup, it goes through the IBM logo and then the Windows logo flashes quickly and then is gone and then the Safe Mode screen appears. No matter which option I choose from the Safe Mode screen, the result is the same: The Windows logo flashes quickly and then the system reboots, and then the IBM logo and then the Safe Mode Screen.I have tried running the repair module from an o/s disk I have here, but when I get to the c: prompt and type "dir" it says "error occurred during directory enumeration".There is only one partition.I have a copy of UBCD4WIN, if that would be helpful in diagnosing the problem.I do not have the o/s disk that belongs to this computer.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWindows XP Home but before it boots to the start up screen it freezes and crashes everytime. I went through many troubleshooting steps and am stuck in a rut. here's what I've done. Tried booting in safe mode, that failed as well. Seems like the OS is really messed up. Tried using a restore cd that includes Windows XP Home. But the boot order for the cd rom is last and so it keeps trying to boot windows first instead of starting up the restore disc. To fix that I went to the Bios. Tried changing the boot order but that was not available to me because they weren't an administrator.
There was an adminstrator password set protecting the boot order but they don't know what the password is because they bought it from ebay a long time ago and lost that person's contact information. So there is no way of finding out the admin password from the previous owner. So now we're in a jam, can't get to Dos, can't get to windows, can't boot from the cd rom to do anything.
I am having a major problem logging into windows. When I get to the log on screen, and click my user name (the only one available) it gets stuck on "loading personal settings".My first reaction was to boot from CD, at which point I could not get my USB keyboard to work during the boot which made it impossible to "hit any key to boot from CD", so I fixed that by plugging the keyboard into the default keyboard port with an adaptor.
When I managed to boot from CD, I tried to do a repair install and got the message "Setup cannot find Hard disks bla bla cannot continue, windows will restart".
Trying to start my computer and it gets to the screen where it gives me 2 seconds to press F11 to start recovery. But after 2 seconds or pressing F11 or any key, another line appears saying the same thing "Press F11 to start recovery". Can't get past this point and start Windows. HD is recognized in another computer as well as in BIOS.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy main pc is stuck in a boot cycle giving me the black screen with options to start in safe mode etc etc and when selecting one of those options it reboots to the same point. When I press return the system tries to start it attempts it, clicks then goes back to boot cycle. The Windows XP system disk won't cut in like it should so I cannot gain control of the pc.
System is a Dell, 2years old and has had various viruses despite having the usual protection. I am currently using my old trusty Advent Pentium 3 for this message (which has never had the same degree of virus prob's curiously). After the first virus Dell talked me through using Ghost - brilliant. Within a couple of days it was hit again and usinng Spybot got rid of the virus but PC kept displaying the message rundll.dll file damaged. So I used XP Recovery seemingly with no problem only to find it won't reboot.
i want to format my computer to where it's like brand new. can someone give me a little step by step?
