View 2 Replies View RelatedI left a MICROSOFT WORD CD in the player and shutdown, the next day I turn on the computer and the CD started up, and it has gone to black screen with cursor each time I start it now. I get 2 choices, F2 or F12. The 4 code lights on the back panel are all green indicating no problems, what can I try?
View 1 Replies View Relateda friend has a Dell Dimension 4550 (P4-2Ghz, 60Gb HDD, 784mb RAM- added 512mb and a NEC DVD+/-R, circa 2002 I think?) and needs to do a clean install. He has the CD that came with it. We looked all over google and the Dell site and can't seem to find out how to do a clean install. We pressed F12 and tried to boot from the CD-ROM and thought it was going to work, but it said that we were trying to install XP on a partition that already had XP on it. I saw no option for full/clean restore.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI first had this problem when I tried to do the first installation. When it would get to the part of the setup in windows mode, it would just keep rebooting. I was able to finally get it to finish installing, and it seemed to be working fine, untill I tried to make sure all my drivers, applications, and my cable internet conection were installed.

I haven't heard anything from my other post, so I thought I would make a new one. I am actually on the computer I was having problems with. I got my anti-virus loaded and ran, found 4 viruses. I also installed Ad-Aware, and Spybot S&D, and ran, keep finding spyware, especially one called Admess. I keep getting pop-ups saying that I have problems with regeristry files, and wants me to download some regeristry repairing software. I can't understand how this stuff was missed by the format?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have actually had it working right 3-4 times, but everytime I install something that needs to restart to finish, I have this problem. Like the first time I had it working, I didn't have any problem with my internet connection, because the first thing I did was start downloading & installing the windows updates. When it was fiinished installing, and wanted to restart, I started having problems with it rebooting again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have just run the automatic update on a dell dimension 4550, running WinXP with SP2. After the 'restart to apply' type message the PC is stuck in nan endless re-boot loop.
I have re-installed WinXP and rebooted, that is fine.I have reinstalled SP2 and re booted, that is fine.
The problem occoures only after applying the 72 autoupdates, after SP2 has been installed.
My computer was going slow and pop-ups like crazy. So I backed up all of my information and got a new install disk from Dell. Heres the problem, When installing it keeps getting hung up on 36, 16, or 9 mins. It will not pass that point. I have exhausted all of my options, I restart checked all the cables, drained the power by pulling the cord and holding the power button then plugging it back in. Then called dell and they walked me through wiping the HD clean, by starting up in DOS and walking me through the steps. Well did all that and started install again, and once again it got hung up on 23 mins
View 7 Replies View RelatedMay seem like a dumb question but I've never had a dell before and this one is getting on my nerves.Ok short story is I inherited this PC from my late mother in law.She had only 256 ram so I bought 1GB and installed it and it still ran slow. Now my 7 year old downloaded a trojan virus which made the PC run even slower.I got rid of the trojan and it still runs slow.I figured I'd be better off just reinstalling windows but everyone wants atleast $80 to $100 to do it, I'd figured I could do it myself but have no idea how to with a Dell. It's an Dimension 1100 Series, has Intel Celeron CPU 2.53 Ghz, DVD/Cd-Rw, that's about it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedPS fan runs, CD drive lights, opens, closes. On opening case, standby light on MB is on, stays on when computer turned off with power button. Stays on when plug pulled short time, less than a minute, goes off. When plugged in, fan starts, standby light lights, even before power button is pressed. Removed CMOS battery, waited five minutes, SB light still on. (Dell online says don't change PCI card while light is on.) The computer is my college G-daughter's; I'd like to get it fixed and back to her ASAP.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe problem is the HD failed. So I put in another HD and reinstalled win XP pro. Everything was fine until this morning. I got up to find it had rebooted in the night and failed to boot up again. I get an error message that says boot failure system security something has failed to initialize due to hardware attatched to your computer is no longer functioning. I've loaded fail safe settings in bios nothing. I thought I'd reinstall windows but once windows starts to boot the keyboard and mouse are no longer recognized. I can't tell it to boot from CD.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI wanted to reinstall Xp Home Edition on my Sony Vaio because I felt that I wanted to start fresh again. I lost my cd so I went on another forum and they told me to run the program called winnt32.exe in the folder C:windowssystem32I386. I did that and I reinstalled xp. After it restarted, It asked me which system I wanted to boot: Windows Xp Home Edition or Windows XP Home edition. I clicked on the new one (which I presumed to be the top one) and found that I could not log in. It just took me to the desktop and there was nothing on it.I also found that I could not use the standby feature. It is pretty much like safe mode except for the fact that I can go on the internet. Now I am faced with two problems.1. How do i get rid of that new dual boot partition 2.How do I reinstall XP on my old partition?

View 6 Replies View RelatedDell that has been fried by lightning and wants me to get the pictures off the Hard Drive. No problem, sort of. The problem is that now I see no info when I boot the computer. The monitor only comes to life when windows starts up. So, I can't enter into the BIOS, change my boot drive, mess with my arrays, or anything. I'm using Windows XP SP2. My HDD are SATA while the Dell's was IDE (just thought I'd throw that out there).
Problem occurs after the Dell HDD has been removed.
I'm using a Dell 9300 Inspiron laptop that was working just fine yesterday. I shut it down and now it won't boot into Windows XP Pro SP3, it goes past the Dell screen then goes all black except for a curser on the top left of screen. It will not boot into Safe Mode (F8). I can boot into the BIOS (F2) but see no discrepancies and can change the boot from the HD to the CD drive. What I've done so far:
1. Inserted the Dell Utilities CD and run full diagnostics-no problems found.
2. Inserted the OS disc and ran XP repair, it finished with no problems shown and then reverted to the black screen with the curser.
I have access to a SATA dock and could check it there but there must be something else, especially since I can't even get into Safe Mode.
I have a dell 2400,2.2 gig cpu, 512 ram, that I just put a new hard drive(40 gig) in,I installed winxp pro ,but the computer will not boot from hard drive,I went to repair console on the win xp cd,and typed fixmbr, then when it said it had done that I again typed fixboot, but it still will not boot,

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Dimension 8200 desktop running WinXP Home however It won't boot to the hard drive. I replaced the drive with a known working one and it still doesn't boot, says Diskette Drive 0 Not Found, however I figured that was referring to the floppy drive. Tried switching the ide cables around and that didn't work either. The power supply is working, as well as all of the fans. Its running a 1700mh processor. Cd-Rom works fine, and I can boot to a CD, I can browse the files if I boot to Knoppix, however it simply won't boot to the Hard Drive. I ran FixMbR and FixBoot in the recovery console, to no avail. Bios is configured properly, and I haven't touched the jumpers. Just to be sure I tried the hard drive in another system, and it wouldn't boot in that one either. Might be the mother board?

I've been working on a Dell system and have gotten rid of several games, programs described as spyware or adware when I googled them and that's about all. Now, however, the system simply won't boot up. It just keeps looping after the Dell screen comes up. I tried booting from a boot disk from drive A: but can't even get in that way. Does anyone have any ideas what I might have done and?moreover?how to get in to the darn thing so I can fix it?
View 10 Replies View RelatedAll things were fine and I had XP pro and XP home installed and working on seperate drives. I have just reinstalled XP pro and now on booting, no option to choose either operating system appears. I have done some searching and have seen references to copying a boot file from the CD and placing it into the XP home operating system to fix this. The instructions were not that detailed and not directly related to having 2 XP installs. nearly all search results I have found related to Xp dual booting with Vista. I have been thinking of now copying ALL the files from the XP Home operating system into the new XP Pro and then reinstalling the XP Home system. Sigh. I cannot use the system repair/recovery option as I do not know the Admin password. where did I put that? Is there an easy fix to get the dual boot working again?
View 8 Replies View RelatedLast year I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my Dell Dimension 5000 running Windows XP Pro, giving me a trouble-free dual boot system until recently. Recently though, I've had problems with Windows being excruciatingly slow, some crashes, unexplained error messages etc - probably partly due to a load of unnecessary and now unwanted programs I've installed along the way. I would now like to start afresh with a clean reinstall of Windows - but am worried about possible complications with my Ubuntu installation and some horror stories I've heard about messing with the Master Boot Record. I do not wish to remove Ubuntu, and have had no problems with it.
Can I simply format my C drive and just install Windows again? Or am I rushing in where angels fear to tread? I have my Win XP Pro disk. I've reinstalled Windows in the past, but that was before I had installed Ubuntu.
