I need to reinstall my windows XP on a new system that i am building. My old system has died and I do have a Boot CD from my "UPGRADE" version from the OLD machine. Will i be able to load the upgrade version (i have my XP Disk) from the old machine on my new machine starting with the Boot CD?
View 6 RepliesI recently upgraded my System from P3 to P4, also added a new 120GB SATA Hard Drive which I kept as a Primary Master.I also attached my old 40GB IDE hard drive which is the secondary master. I had installed Windows XP Pro on the IDE HDD and now have installed the same O.S. on the new drive also. In my old system which also had two hard drives (both IDE drives) I used to get a boot option. But with the SATA + IDE combination the boot option has disappeared and it boots directly from the SATA Drive.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Dimension 8200. The HD died, so I replaced it with a HD from another older Dell that had Window's 98 installed on it. I upgraded to Windows XP Home with the CD that came with the 8200. Everything works except there's no sound. There are no errors or conflicts in the device manager. I've loaded the drivers that came with the sound card and I've loaded drivers from Dell's web site. Still no sound. Mute is off.As far as I can tell, there is no on board sound.I've also loaded the chipset drivers, although this was after I finished the XP upgrade and had sound issues.I try loading SoundMax but I get an error at the end - driver not found.I've tried checking the set up (F2 when booting) to see if the sound card is disabled or if I could disable onboard sound but the only sound option I find is the PC speaker.The only other thing I've found on Dell's web site to try is to reformat the HD and start from scratch. I'd rather not do this if I don't have to.

All works super...drivers, hardware, all software.You know that things not always work after a re-install.I like to upgrade my oldish mobo/cpu and then of course newer DDR2 RAM.Is there a way to make these upgrades without having to reinstall XP. I tried this before and of course XP doesn't load all new drivers automatically.I heard I can go into the XP bootup screen and do a repair.

Thought you long timers in this forum would be able to help me. I have a full retail ver.of ME. IT comes with 2 discs. 1-OS 2-Boot floppy . MY boot floppy was erased. I can't reinstall ME without this boot floppy on an empty drive . Has anyone used anything from bootdisc.com? or any other site for this such thing. I know MS probably still has some around but try to buy one.

(1) Upgrade
(2) new reinstall
If I choose upgrade, would I risk that my system would remain with its present problems? Or should I rather choose new reinstall?
Encountered a Blue Screen of Death error. The error stated that I should run Chkdsk and then proceeds to restart and bring me to the Windows boot selection screen (safe mode, last known good configuration, normally). No matter which choice I pick, it always leads to the BSOD then restarts. Since this is getting me nowhere fast, I want to just format and reinstall windows. I do not have my recovery CDs, and when I enter the BIOS to change the boot sequence I cannot change it so the CD drive is above the hard drive in priority. The reason it gives me in the bios is that "All items on this menu cannot be modified in user mode. If any items require changes, please consult your system supervisor. Any ideas on how I can boot off the cd and reinstall windows from scratch?
View 10 Replies View RelatedAfter CPU the processor was installed I attempted to boot normally and the 1st time it worked - but Windows said "you may need to restart your computer for hardware to perform properly [paraphrasing]" so I restart...Now when I select "Windows XP Professional" attempt to boot normally it just restarts the PC. It also does this in SAFE (and SAFE with Cmd, Ntwrk Prompt, etc.) It just so happens that I use an app called TuneUp Utilities and there's an option during startup for "Windows XP Professional (TuneUp Backup)" which I tried when all else failed (Last Known Good, etc) and it boots just fine.My question is: How can I repair XP so I can boot normally? I've tried checking the disk(s) but not much help, and while there's a lot of folks offering different solutions (repair install, or god forbid- fresh install) I thought that my ability to boot through TuneUp might offer a clue as to what's ailing me.

I restarted it and now after I go to F8 and try everything, like (configure to..., safe mode..etc) it just go to black screen of purgatory. I go into bios and look at it like I know wtf I am doing and leave and then back to that screen of eternal damnation. Now before I launch my CPU out of my pumpkin gun. I don't have a start up disk nor anything backed up, that's how i roll.

It was too small for all my music and apps so I installed a second drive which I then started using for files.So Drive 1 was 40 gb and Drive 2 was 80GB..I was running out of space again so I used a drive cloner to move the 40 GB drive to a 200GB Drive.Disk Management shows different according to it Drive 0 is the 80gb drive and is assigned a letter of D and Drive 1 is the 200GB drive assigned a letter of C.Both C and D have a Windows directory off of and a Program Files but the Program Files on C has more entries than the one on D.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my laptop from XP Home to XP Pro. But, I absent-mindedly started to install by booting from the CD like I was doing a fresh install/reformat rather than doing it from inside the OS to do an upgrade. I caught myself, however and restarted without the CD and upgraded Windows from inside Windows. It worked, but now when I boot my computer, it gives me two options to choose from: "Windows XP Home Edition" or "Windows XP Professional Setup." When I pick the Home option, the computer boots up fine and goes to Windows.
However, when I go to Start>Control Panel>System, it shows that I have XP Pro even though I chose the XP Home option at boot. If I choose the XP Pro Setup option, it asks for the SP2 CD, even though the OS is bundled with SP2 on the same CD. I hit Enter, and it keeps asking for the SP2 CD even though the CD is in there. I tried to go to the Disk Management screen and delete the XP Pro Setup partition (which was only 1Gb), but that didn't work. So, I figured that boot.ini was still confused as to what to boot to.
The first thing is I keep getting a 'Windows Installer' box popping up which says 'preparing to install' when I check my Hotmail emails. This problem began after I had a windows update which turned out to be an upgrade to Service Pack 3, last week. As soon as I've clicked cancel on the Windows Installer box, I get an alert from ZoneAlarm saying Windows Messenger is requesting to access the internet.
The first time it happened I just let the installer do what it was trying to as I thought the service pack upgrade had made changes to some settings. But then it happened again as soon as I opened the next email (I only open emails from people who I know like my close friends or family by the way). So I'm presuming there's a problem somewhere?
The problem is the HD failed. So I put in another HD and reinstalled win XP pro. Everything was fine until this morning. I got up to find it had rebooted in the night and failed to boot up again. I get an error message that says boot failure system security something has failed to initialize due to hardware attatched to your computer is no longer functioning. I've loaded fail safe settings in bios nothing. I thought I'd reinstall windows but once windows starts to boot the keyboard and mouse are no longer recognized. I can't tell it to boot from CD.

I turn it on, see the Gateway Screen with it's options, then it goes to a black screen. I have my startup disk and i'm FULLY prepared to reinstall windows and erase everything on my computer, but when I get to that screen to do so (choosing destructive reformat or whatever) it starts, but then never finishes. I gave it to my tech people at the college, but they're seemingly incompetent, so I've come to you guys looking for an answer.

I lost my cd so I went on another forum and they told me to run the program called winnt32.exe in the folder C:windowssystem32I386. I did that and I reinstalled xp. After it restarted, It asked me which system I wanted to boot: Windows Xp Home Edition or Windows XP Home edition. I clicked on the new one (which I presumed to be the top one) and found that I could not log in. It just took me to the desktop and there was nothing on it.I also found that I could not use the standby feature. It is pretty much like safe mode except for the fact that I can go on the internet. I have just reinstalled XP pro and now on booting, no option to choose either operating system appears. I have done some searching and have seen references to copying a boot file from the CD and placing it into the XP home operating system to fix this. The instructions were not that detailed and not directly related to having 2 XP installs. nearly all search results I have found related to Xp dual booting with Vista. I have been thinking of now copying ALL the files from the XP Home operating system into the new XP Pro and then reinstalling the XP Home system. Sigh. I cannot use the system repair/recovery option as I do not know the Admin password. where did I put that? Is there an easy fix to get the dual boot working again?
View 8 Replies View RelatedLast year I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my Dell Dimension 5000 running Windows XP Pro, giving me a trouble-free dual boot system until recently. Recently though, I've had problems with Windows being excruciatingly slow, some crashes, unexplained error messages etc - probably partly due to a load of unnecessary and now unwanted programs I've installed along the way. I would now like to start afresh with a clean reinstall of Windows - but am worried about possible complications with my Ubuntu installation and some horror stories I've heard about messing with the Master Boot Record. I do not wish to remove Ubuntu, and have had no problems with it.
Can I simply format my C drive and just install Windows again? Or am I rushing in where angels fear to tread? I have my Win XP Pro disk. I've reinstalled Windows in the past, but that was before I had installed Ubuntu.
I had to re-install my Win 2K server. The second partition has Windows XP on it and and XP doesn't boot up after the re-install. The error message I get is it cannot find the SYSTEMd file under the Config folder and it is trying to boot Win 2K instead of XP.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI need to completely clean a hard disk on a PC desktop. The desktop originally had ME installed, and was upgraded to XP Home edition. Once I have the hard disk cleared I am assuming that I need to use a startup disk for ME; install ME and then upgrade to XP Home edition. I have the original installation cd's (ME & XP) that came with the desktop; however, I do not have a startup floppy for ME. Also, the ME files that were saved to the hard drive when the upgrade was done have been erased. Is there a way of meeting my goal of re-installing XP Home other than as I have described?

I use Windows 98 SE on my desktop, but I'm wanting to upgrade to XP, as 98 is no longer supported by microsoft and increasingly I am having problems running newer software on it or finding compatable software for win 98.
