My Father gave me his 10 year old IBM Aptiva computer with (128ram). It is running Windows 98, 2nd addition. I want to upgrade the operating system. I don't think that the computer can handle Windows Vista. I was going to order Windows XP Home SP2 but I thought I would ask first to see if I should do anything different. Also, will Windows XP install over Windows 98 without problems?
I need to completely clean a hard disk on a PC desktop. The desktop originally had ME installed, and was upgraded to XP Home edition. Once I have the hard disk cleared I am assuming that I need to use a startup disk for ME; install ME and then upgrade to XP Home edition. I have the original installation cd's (ME & XP) that came with the desktop; however, I do not have a startup floppy for ME. Also, the ME files that were saved to the hard drive when the upgrade was done have been erased. Is there a way of meeting my goal of re-installing XP Home other than as I have described?
A cd for xp pro which I used to upgrade from win 98 on an old computer. Can I use it to upgrade from xp home to xp pro on a different computer? I don't want to try unless I am sure it will work.
My hard drive on my old computer fried. I had Windows 98 and purchased the upgrade Windows XP about 6 months ago. Is it true that the Windows XP upgrade I purchased is just a throw away? From what I understand, I can't put it on my new computer that is now running windows 98. I have the same IP for registering and everything.
I use Windows 98 SE on my desktop, but I'm wanting to upgrade to XP, as 98 is no longer supported by microsoft and increasingly I am having problems running newer software on it or finding compatable software for win 98. I was thinking of purchasing "Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade with Service Pack 2", but have no idea about upgrading an OS as I have never done this before. My PC specs are: 190MB RAM, Intel Celeron 500MHz. Is this enough to run Windows XP on? Or is it a better idea to get a new PC with XP pre-installed? If I did purchase this upgrade, how does it install, i.e. is it easy to install, like reformating windows 98 or do you need 'expert' knowledge? Can anything go wrong in an OS upgrade?
Is there any way to install Microsoft Office 2007 on a Windows 2000 Professional operating system? If I have to upgrade what type of operating system should I install?

I have a Dell insiron 530 with recently acquired virus or trojan that has prohibited my computer from running mcafee. I am running Windows XP. I was considering upgrding to windows 7 anyway. Will the install of a new operating system clean the hard disk of this and any other virus? I have already backed up my files onto an external hard drive and ran the Mcafee on the external drive and it is clean.
I just build a computer and tonight i installed XP Pro SP2 on it. I updated all my drivers. Haven't downloaded anything. The OS seems very sluggish. i.e. screen locking up. clicking on START button and having a 3-4 sec delay before it comes up.

my computer is a pentium II with 128 mb ram and 5 gb. I wont to upgrade not buy a whole new computer. Does anyone suggest any good and cheap upgrades for
I recently purchased additional memory, 2 sticks of 256mb PC133, for my HP computer. I currently have 2x128mb and this has worked since I bought my computer about 3 years ago. My problem is that when I install both the new sticks, 512 total, the system refuses to boot into Windows and gives a FATAL SYSTEM ERROR. I don't get this error with the 128mb memory, or even when mixing for a total of 384. The memory is from Crucial.com and I have run diagnostics on all sticks with no problems. I have all the lastest Windows, BIOS, and hardware updates available, and still it crashes
I recently upgraded my System from P3 to P4, also added a new 120GB SATA Hard Drive which I kept as a Primary Master.I also attached my old 40GB IDE hard drive which is the secondary master. I had installed Windows XP Pro on the IDE HDD and now have installed the same O.S. on the new drive also. In my old system which also had two hard drives (both IDE drives) I used to get a boot option. But with the SATA + IDE combination the boot option has disappeared and it boots directly from the SATA Drive.
i have recently added 1 GB RAM in slot M2, and after that the 'system' process at sr. no. 2 is showing memory usage of 73,844 K and it goes back to around 300 K if i remove the newly installed RAM and revert to old 256 MB but the system becomes dead slow.this high usage is also slowing down the system.
I need to reinstall my windows XP on a new system that i am building. My old system has died and I do have a Boot CD from my "UPGRADE" version from the OLD machine. Will i be able to load the upgrade version (i have my XP Disk) from the old machine on my new machine starting with the Boot CD?
Now when I start XP I get the option to load a previous version of windows or (default) install the new OS As I say the second option comes up as default and gives barely 2 seconds to select the first option and continue with starting the computer How can I eradicate the option to install the new OS?
I upgrade HP computer to new Dell computer. I put HP's hard disk to Dell computer. The system is keeping reboot. I put back to HP computer, then the hard disk is working fine. I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.
Some time ago I booted up my computer,to find that my XP switched to Windows classic style,I didn't take it seriously so I went to properties to change when I get an error message saying there is a problem with run32.dll,not only that, but the visual styles can't load I assume, becuase of run32.dll,so now I'm stuck with the piece of s*** style.
The situation: A reasonably new PC, clean and working properly. Several new programs are installed, including Firefox, Winamp, desktop publishing, photo manager, and security software (not the antivirus, standalone scanners.) Everything appears to be fine.I log on to Windows Live OneCare to use their "Safety Scanner" to, as they say, check for PC health issues and optimize performance. Mind you, the site recommends users log on once a month for the full service scan. As you know, the scan includes the removal of what it refers to as invalid registry entries. "Oh boy," right? The registry. Except you'd like to believe the official Microsoft site won't screw up your programs.
I tried to do a System Recovery today on my Sony laptop. Got 41% completed and had a fatal error. Options given were Ignore, Retry or Abort. Attempted a Retry. Got a fatal error message and everything locked up. I ended up shutting down and when I turned the computer on again it said no operating system found. Where did I screw up?
This is a six year old Sony, XP, AMD 1.0Ghz. Everything was working at the time I tried the System Recovery EXCEPT I was constantly getting low space messages for drive C. I have no files on this drive and very little software. It is a 20G hard drive partioned into two 10G partitions.
Should I ever use one of the utility programs to wipe my hard drive completely, how do I reinstall Windows XP since the CD driver has been erased? How can you reinstall an operating system that is on CD when you have no driver for the CD player? The reason I am asking these questions is that I might want to give my computer to friend and I want my stuff off of the hard drive and my friend to be able to use the computer.

I read somewhere?{and forgot to note where} that system restore "does not restore everything"! Correct? What doesn't it restore? Isn't it primarily personal stuff that you should backup anyway? Can anyone provide a list of what it doesn't restore or provide a link to? that gives this info?Is it in the help/tutorial/tour of xp and other OSs that have it?Remember! =There's no such thing as a stupid question but they're the easiest to answer!" TSG says so! So there!
