I searched for driver for my webcam. found what appeared to be the correct info on-line, but after trying to install it the desktop reverts to an all white screen. When booting fresh, the desktop background picture will display; however, as boot process proceeds, the screen turns completely white. Icons are displayed, but no picture, just the picture of a blizzard in Montana on a very cold, blustery winter day

I wasn't paying attention to my downloads and unloaded some nasty spy/adware on my computer. I think I've got most of it weeded out, but I can't get my desktop to return to normal. It's always white. The wallpaper tries to load from time to time, but it always goes white. there is an Internet Explorer window kinda overlayed into the top left corner that I cannot close.
I know is this going to sound very "lame", but here goes. My wife like the desktop theme for the seascape, it has the ships wheel when working and for the mouse is a sea shell. Very nice. But, the background is a light tan colored and I hate it, I would like the plain white background. Is there a way to keep the sea theme and still get a white background?
I tried to create a shortcut of an email internet link onto my desktop and all I got was a small rectangular white box. Try as I might, I could not remove it. The box is adjustable and can be made to cover the entire desktop area behind the icons but over the current desktop theme. In my attempts to delete it I have ended up with a white box about an inch wide from the top to the bottom on the left side of the screen. I cannot reduce the size any further but as I said, I can drag the right margin all the way across the entire screen.
after some online chat with one.com creating my website i ended up with a white line 2/3rds of the way up the screen and 4mm wide. never had anything like it b4.eror
My friend was checking for trojans, and apparently deleted Explorer.exe (we are not so clear on why). Following this, his computer (which is running Win XP Pro SP1) displays a white, icon-less desktop, with no direct access to the start menu and no right-click ability. He installed SP2 - no joy. He also can't find the original OS disk for the 3 years-old computer
I don't know when/how it started, but now everytime I start windows, all my icons except My Computer, My Docs etc. appear as white squares. I know of a temporary solution, to change the icon size, and then change it back
I recently had some spyware that took over my desktop. Everytime I would right click on my desktop it would bring up the options as if it was right clicking on a document in Internet explorer. So I went to view source and discovered that it was linking to C:windowsdesktop.html. I went and deleted that file. My desktop then went to a white screen that shifted to different shades of white. So I figured that some spyware program is still trying to reference that file. I dug through my registry via regedit and searched for anything that may be linking to that same C:windowsdesktop.html and I found one "PersistMoniker" and deleted the entry. Now my desktop has a sidebar, just like the ones if you were to open My Computer and on the left side of the window it has the System Tasks/Other Places/Details and their drop downs. Exactly the same thing with the exception that its now for my desktop and those options are Folder Tasks/Other Places/Details. I've taken a screenshot but have no web to upload the image too. If this is needed I can email it to whomever decides to help me Other things to note would be that if I go to Start -> Run... and type in explorer. It will just boot me back to the desktop after a flash of all my windows disappearing. Instead of launching windows explorer. There is an error message but it appears when I shut down the computer and it flashes so quickly that i cannot read it. The computer shuts down normally.
I have Windows XP Home and SP2 installed. Also I have AdAware, Spybot, Search and Destroy, MacAfee virsusscan and MS AntySpyware. Yesterday and today, I noticed that several icons on my desktop changed to a generic white square. Even as I'm writing this message, two more changed. What's going on? How to stop icons from changing?
Running XP Home on a desktop machine - When desktop loading - windows background is normal - as load gresses to load icons the screen goes all blue then changes to white background. AL,, I have updated video (SIS Mirage driver) No errors shown in device manager.
desktop was hijacked with a bright red screen that said "Your privacy is in danger" along with an insertion in top tool bar of 4 buttons that would fix this "danger. Have managed to get rid off fradulent tool bar and bright red screen. Now my desktop is all white and am not able to create any files there. Have run a number of scanners but the white screen still there. Running Windows XP with updates.
Trying to help a friend of mine. He had added a shortcut to his desktop, says was active shortcut, ever since then has not been able to change desktop, its white (none) . I went to the sreen to change it and selected the one he wanted . I then closed the system and rebooted, when it first comes up,the background is correct, but when loads icons it reverts to a white background.
I'll cut to the chase. What I am asking is someway of turning the Entire Windows Desktop/Screen "Black and White" not simply High Contrast.I am one of those unfortunate ones, like many, that suffer from quite severe migraines from time to time. Couple this with frequent headaches, sometimes daily. This obviously isnt helped by the fact that my hobby and career are both in IT. I have tried every possible solution to alleviate the headaches. Lay off certain foods, make sure to have a balanced diet. Turn off any strong lighting around my computer screen, remove any strong colours from the desktop etc.
I have White Box on my Desktop In Upper-Left Corner of my screen that I cannot delete or otherwise remove. I am running Windows XP, and McAfee and Ad-Aware say I have no viruses. In trying to get rid of this box I have discovered that I can expand and reduce the size of the box from the lower right hand corner, and if I drag a web page shortcut icon from my desktop over the box, the web page is displayed. When a web page is being displayed inside the box there are scroll bars on the right and bottom sides to scroll around the web page. If I click on a hyperlink within the box, my default web browser is opened to the link. At first I was using IE, and then I switched to Firefox, and it made no difference. Periodically, the web page being displayed inside the box will disapear, along with the scrolling bars, leaving behind a white box.
When there is a web page being displayed in the box I can right click on the box and I get a menu with the following options: Back, Forward, Save Background as, Set Background, Copy Background, Set as Desktop Item, Select All, Paste, Create Shortcut, Ad to Favorites, View Source, Print, Refresh, Export to Microsoft Excel, Print, Properties. Some of these items are grayed out. If I select properties, there is a "General" tab with the name of the web page, Protocol Info, Type, Connection, Address, Size, Created, Modified. There is a Certificates button at the bottom in addition to OK and Cancel buttons.
Hi! After running a program called System Mechanic from Iolo technologies I discovered my computer had stopped working properly and kept telling me that files essential to the smooth running of windows had been changed. I did a system restore operation and almost everything went back to normal. The only exception is my desktop icons, and icons on the quick lanch bar. They're appearing inside white squares and not against the desktop wallpaper like they should almost as if the wallpaper has not loaded properly under the icons

It doesn't seem to be causing any problems but it's just a pain. I?m running Windows XP SP2. I'm going to try to attach a screen shot of it.

I am having this new cursor and I don't know where and what program initiated it and how to remove it. I am including a picture that outlines the cursor. What is it and where did it come from? I must disable it. It is SERIOUSLY hindering my performance with quick copy paste as the cursor is now offset from my old one so I always grab too far to the left.
I have a startup folder on my desktop with nothing in it but windows won't let me remove. Is it that necessary to have this empty folder adding clutter to my desktop? I know the folder has something to do with allowing programs to run when windows starts up but there is nothing it.
I have an HP Media Center and run Windows XP Media Edition. Everytime I close a window on my desktop or end a program I keep getting the following error message. Can someone help me to get rid of this off my pc because it is getting annoying. The system file is not suitable for running MS-Dos and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.Although all I have to do is click on the close link and it clears off the screen this is getting annoying every time I close out a program.
I get this annoying message "The document contains no data", and it's been getting more frequent. I ran Spyboy, Ad-Aware, Norton, and MS Anti-Spy and they found nothing. I recently downloaded SpywareGuard and the new version of Peer Guardian 2,
My computer has recently been getting an annoying amount of pop/ups for Winfixer, and WinAntispyware advertisements while surfing the web, but I haven't had it as a browser hijacker. Everytime I delete it from my registry site list it returns. I'm just wondering if what can i do to permanently get rid of this annoying pest. I have run adaware, spybot, spysubtract, AVG, Norton and nothing seems to get rid if this. Can someone run me though detailed steps or excellent free programs that will terminate this forever
i'll start from the beginning. Today i accidentally clicked a random add and managed to get AV security suite downloaded into my comp, Very annoying program. So it blocked me out of all my settings and did the normal thing rogue spy-wares do. So i restarted and quickly ran msconfig and went into safe mode. I don't really know much about safe mode so i opted to do a system restore. I did it for 5 days ago, the 22nd and when i restarted. I had no audio device recognized and explorer wont stop crashing. As im typing this explorer has perma crashed and im deathly afraid of what i should do. Please help :[ I really depend on this comp for a lot of stuff and would hate to have something so stupid as a spy-ware destroy it.
Whenever I take a CD out of the burner and close the tray, an annoying cd icon flashes at the mouse pointer. This will happen if I just use a CD or burn a CD. I have windows XP Pro and am using a Cyber Drive CW079D CD R/RW.
I often right click in IE and select Create Shortcut. It puts a shortcut and my desktop to that page. This mysteriously stopped working. The icon appears on my desktop with the page title and all, but when I double click it, it just opens up my browser and loads about:blank. In the shortcut file's properties, and then gives me the file's size, location, etc.but it doesn't list the URL anywhere. It's just getting on my nerves having to copy a page's URL to a text file on my desktop if I want to remind myself of something.
My daughter has been going on random internet sites and even though we've got mcafee virus scans and firewalls something seems to have loaded itself on our Personal Computer and is slowly stopping it working. We keep getting what looks like spyware that pops up with a virus/PUP warning and saying we need to download spytrooper to get rid of it. A yellow triangle flashes in the bottom corner of our screen with a system alert saying spyware and adware are on our personal computer.First it changed our home page to the spyware home page and now it's stopping us accessing internet sites, says it's done and logged on but we just have a white screen with a task bar at the top.We use windows NT.
