View 2 RepliesHi! After running a program called System Mechanic from Iolo technologies I discovered my computer had stopped working properly and kept telling me that files essential to the smooth running of windows had been changed. I did a system restore operation and almost everything went back to normal. The only exception is my desktop icons, and icons on the quick lanch bar. They're appearing inside white squares and not against the desktop wallpaper like they should almost as if the wallpaper has not loaded properly under the
icons
I have Windows XP Home and SP2 installed. Also I have AdAware, Spybot, Search and Destroy, MacAfee virsusscan and MS AntySpyware. Yesterday and today, I noticed that several icons on my desktop changed to a generic white square. Even as I'm writing this message, two more changed. What's going on? How to stop icons from changing?

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis all started out that I was having a microphone audio recording problem the other day and was trying to solve that...A couple of days ago, I did a complete HP System Restore on my computer to try to fix the problem, not realizing that it would do all that it did to my computer. Im having to re-install alot of my programs, etc. Now When Im trying to watch a video online, if I click the 'full screen' view it comes up just totally white screen with no picture at
all.
The welcome screen refuses to show, even though i've selected "use the welcome screen" under user accounts. Instead I get the classic logon screen. Interesting to note, is that when "use the welcome screen" is selected, there is a black background to the logon, but when it's not selected (when classic mode is actually supposed to show), I get the logon with the default blue background. I've tried going into regedit and activated it manually, (used a 1 value), but I still get the classic logon screen.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been unable to stop the Windows logon screen from appearing, I have checked my settings, they have it disabled, yet I still get the Welcome screen and have to click my user name to logon to Windows. Is there some kind of other way I can disable this, a registry edit or any thing? It didn't used to be this way and I have no idea why it changed. This started after installing XP SP2. I checked and did have to change the setting to stop the Welcome screen, but it doesn't work. My system used to boot with no need for clicking or logging on.

We keep getting what looks like spyware that pops up with a virus/PUP warning and saying we need to download spytrooper to get rid of it. A yellow triangle flashes in the bottom corner of our screen with a system alert saying spyware and adware are on our personal computer.First it changed our home page to the spyware home page and now it's stopping us accessing internet sites, says it's done and logged on but we just have a white screen with a task bar at the top.We use windows NT.

Ok the problem is constant from start up to shutdown and has been occurring now for about 2 weeks. At first i thought it was a virus so i cleaned my computer but it is still occurring. The problem is this, every now and then my screen will go completely white, its just a display thing cause it happened when i was working while listening to music. it can last anywhere to just 1 sec to 5 minutes. Its constant all the way through but it gets worse if i am watching a dvd or playing a game. What is this problem and how can i fix it? i tried system restore but that didn't work.i think it may be the software i installed at the time but i can't find it in the add or remove programs list to uninstall it.

View 7 Replies View RelatedThe other day while using my dads laptop, i closed the screen, and on reopening it, it displayed a blank white screen. I turned it off and back on again. It seem to be booting normally until it was time for the desktop to load, at which time the white screen returned. It boots in safe mode and i tried a system restore, which was unsuccessful.

View 4 Replies View Relatedlast night my electric ran out suddenly...this doesnt usually happen 'cause i try to keep it all up to date (key meters for ya) When i turned my comp back on it went to the Black screen with White text, you know the one with Start Windows Normally.Start in Safe Mode etc.Well either way when i choose one of those, i get a blue screen of death appearing, can't quite remember what it said now, 'cause i am at a friend house at the moment, but i rang some tech support guy and he said my ROM had crashed, i've never heard anything like this before, so i am hoping you guys will know whats wrong, when i get back later i will find out what the blue screen has on it and post it here, but i know when the electric ran out it seriously messed something up...
I don't know how to fix it, and well if i have to re-install windows, then i'll just have to, but theres usually some other way.
Any one know what the problem might be? I try to open Internet Explorer but all i get is a white screen. When i try to open some files from my desktop a window pops up asking me if want to Open/Save the file. Im always asked if i want to open/save files even if theyre part of my system. I believe its a problem with explorer.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently got the computer listed into my signature, and I am having problems. I pretty much get an error every five minutes, then when ever I am doing like messenger and browsing at the same time. It gives me the usual blue screen with white text, saying an error, I have found mostly that it is one of three errors that usually happen. I am getting so angry, as I NO JOKE in the last hour, have had 37 errors.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently had some spyware that took over my desktop. Everytime I would right click on my desktop it would bring up the options as if it was right clicking on a document in Internet explorer. So I went to view source and discovered that it was linking to C:windowsdesktop.html. I went and deleted that file. My desktop then went to a white screen that shifted to different shades of white. So I figured that some spyware program is still trying to reference that file. I dug through my registry via regedit and searched for anything that may be linking to that same C:windowsdesktop.html and I found one "PersistMoniker" and deleted the entry. Now my desktop has a sidebar, just like the ones if you were to open My Computer and on the left side of the window it has the System Tasks/Other Places/Details and their drop downs. Exactly the same thing with the exception that its now for my desktop and those options are Folder Tasks/Other Places/Details. I've taken a screenshot but have no web to upload the image too. If this is needed I can email it to whomever decides to help me Other things to note would be that if I go to Start -> Run... and type in explorer. It will just boot me back to the desktop after a flash of all my windows disappearing. Instead of launching windows explorer. There is an error message but it appears when I shut down the computer and it flashes so quickly that i cannot read it. The computer shuts down normally.

View 6 Replies View RelatedSorry if this is a repeat. My Toshiba Satellite M45 running Win XP Home, SP2 is caught in a boot-up loop. It shows the Toshiba splash screen, the "Windows is starting up" screen, then flashes a blue screen with white characters (too fast for me to make out any detail), then the "Windows didn't startup properly" (I forget the precise wording) screen, with the choices of Safe Mode, etc. I've tried every option on the list, but it still fails, returning to the Boot Options screen. Mea Culpa: I haven't done a backup in quite some time, so I'm anxious about the data on the hard drive.

When I launch IE it just hangs attempting to load my homepage (google) but I can press stop and access Options etc.. Firefox and all my other programs that access the internet are working fine but I need IE working too.I can't even access my router control panel via IE which makes me think this is a IE networking configuration problem. I've tried flushing dns but that didn't help.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI had a wallpaper background on my computer, but it was suddenly replaced by a white background that says Display Problem in a big blue triangle. Under it there was a box that said "Click here to restore background" or something like that. When I clicked on it my background became a solid blue background. I tried changing it by right clicking, but when the Properties windows opens, the only folders that show up are the Screensaver and Settings folders. All the others are gone.I can change the wallpaper when I go to My Pictures and right click and set up as background, but the screen remains blue and you can only see the picture briefly when powering on and off
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy computer shutdown and on boot up it hangs at the black screen showing the white bar at the bottom. I have Windows 98 and 2000 on my computer and neither will boot up from C:, CDROM, or StartUp/BootUp disks. When I try to boot up from the Windows 2000 boot up disk it sometimes will not get passed the blue screen showing 'Windows 2000 setup. Once or twice it has shown some functions in the bar at the bottom of the page. I have tried to boot up using Windows 98 start up disk but most times it hangs at C:. Last night it did open Windows 98 but would not let me reinstall 2000 or do a repair. It now is hanging in both OS. I am told it could be my memory...but how do I check? Upon start up my memory check shows all is okay. I have ran the utility disk for my hard drive and it says all is okay. Before I invest in new memory is there anything else I should check or try? My computer is older and the memory is quite expensive.
