Office / Acrobat / Icons Replaced With Generic Windows Icons
Mar 30, 2005
I started my computer today and all of the icons pointing to Microsoft Office files, Adobe Acrobat files, and similar files have been replaced by generic windows icons (white icon with little window in the middle) they are no longer program specific icons.Yes, I have tried TweakUI to rebuild the icons and it did nothing, I have tried increasing then decreasing the size of the icons to attempt to force windows to replace them with the correct icons and that has not worked either. I have also tried to use system restore and that did not help either. This is really making me angry and I don't understand why it happened I have searched everywhere for a solution and found nothing.
XP with SP2. Start> All programs. Almost all of the program icons are now generic icons. Can I get the program icons back? Also, some of my desktop icons have become generic.
I don't know when/how it started, but now everytime I start windows, all my icons except My Computer, My Docs etc. appear as white squares. I know of a temporary solution, to change the icon size, and then change it back
I was given a Toshiba notebook and only told it doesn't work. It will boot into XP but all of the non system icons have the same generic icon. Non of the icons work (nothing happens when you click on them). Basically can't get into anything. Trying to run system restore from Run brings up the no program associated with this file message. Safe mode is the same and Last Good Config was also the same. I tried running system restore from Safe Mode with command prompt using %systemroot%system32estore strui.exe. which brings up an empty system restore box. Although it looks like it came with a XP CD, all that I have is a restore CD. One other thing that bothers me is that about once a minute what sounds like the system fan goes on for about 10 seconds. I don't mind using the restore CD(it's not my laptop or info that will be erased), but I would like to avoid that if possible.
I have Windows XP Home and SP2 installed. Also I have AdAware, Spybot, Search and Destroy, MacAfee virsusscan and MS AntySpyware. Yesterday and today, I noticed that several icons on my desktop changed to a generic white square. Even as I'm writing this message, two more changed. What's going on? How to stop icons from changing?
After going to "all programs"from Start Menu, the Program folder icons have gone "generic". The programs within the folder do have correct icons. I used a program called Registry Booster about a week ago. I wonder if it caused this? I notice that about 1/4 of the folders do have correct icons. How can I restore all the folder correct icons?
My control panel has changed from a page full of icons to a long dropdown strip of small icons with there lables. There is no obivous way in to alter anything.
i have searched everywhere to do this , no site seemed to know how to get rid of it so i am helping the troubled with this problem, well not really a problem but an adjustment..it is a piece of cake. first right click on the desktop, go to arrange icons by ,uncheck lock web items to desktop(bang it's done).
Down on the bottom of my desktop this thing keeps hidding my icons. I click on the little arrow to show hidden icons and they show for a second then they . disappear. I would like to see them.
After a malware infection (Inet2 and SpySherriff - which took over my desktop) I cleaned up some files, directories and registry-entries. Now, after the cleaning activity as explained by techguys, everything seems going well. All programs do start without problems (through the start-menu or the quick-start taskbar), but there is a small drawback: my desktop screen shows only my wallpaper, there are no icons. The right-mouse click on the desktop also doesn't work (although the desktopsettings are accessible through the control panel). I use WinXP pro. what is wrong and how do I get the icons back on the screen?
I just upgraded from 2k to XP. On 2K i could have all my desktop icons and icons for programs i use down on the task bar above open applications. Im sure theres a way to do this on XP so i dont have to go to my desktop or the start menu every time to open a new program.
I was playing a game (sims2), and after closing it down everything on my desktop looks like it's all stretched or zoomed in on and the font is like the font from the game(?!) - now my only problem is I can't get it to go back to normal. It's not that the windows or font have been changed in the display properties. Even when I look at my photos they are all stretched out of wack too! Please help! Because this has happened on my hubbies work computer.
For the past week now I've had no desktop icons or windows bar at the bottom of my screen. This has limited me to how i can use my pc as I'm not very good with shortcuts etc to launch the web tab. i also cannot get the start menu up by pressing the windows button on my keyboard Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could have caused this and how i resolve the situation?
I have a DELL computer with windows XP, and I have no desktop icons. My comp. turns on but once the screen comes up I have no icons.I don't even have the little start icon at the bottom, so I can't open anything.
I'm unable to drag and drop icons from desktop to an open window or open window to open window what happens is when i hold down the left mouse button to drag an icon from the desktop to an open window the cursor changes to a black circle with a diagonal line going through it
I'm running a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Windows XP Home on it.My problem is as such:When ever I close an explorer window, the taskbar and desktop icons disappear for a few seconds...Its quite annoying, and it also closes any other Windows I have open.Programs don't seem to be affected.Has anyone come across this problem? And are there any solutions?
I reinstalled Windows for my sister, who is visually impaired. I just installed Windows XP Pro. Just finished it, and then handed it over to her, to customize her settings. Since she has bad vision, she usually lowers the resolution down to 800x600 and has the font size and title bar sizes larger. Well as soon as I left her alone with her computer, she messed up the windows or icon settings so bad, so everything is HUGE. Everything is so huge, that (what should be) small menus now fill the whole screen. We can't get to the part of the preferences window to change the resolution to something higher, and we can't get to anywhere (that we know of) to change anything back to something resembling normal. Basically, we can't do anything anymore.I know I can reinstall Windows XP all over again, but since I JUST DID THAT I'd like to avoid having to do it all over again. Is there some way to reset the preferences, without having to reinstall the whole operating system for something so seemingly idiotic?
My icons were recently messed with when starting my compute. For some reason, they are gone. Do you know how I can recover these? Furthermore, when I do click on the C or D drive, it directs me to file search. Thought if I right-click on the disk and click on open, I can continue as usual.I tried going though system restore, but the last and only available date is at 3:52 AM today.
I have just installed a fresh copy of XP Pro and am now attempting to install Office 2000 Midway through the installation a window entitled "windows file protection" pops up which reads: "Windows files must be installed for your installation to proceed. Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD now." The buttons available to press are retry, more information and cancel. When i insert the cd i used to install XP Pro it tells me i've inserted the wrong CD- the same message comes up when i press "retry"After clicking cancel to exit setup, i get the message entitled "installer information"- "Error 1933- The windows installer service cannot update one or more protected Windows files"
How do I get my windows xp icons back? They are completely messed up. First they all changed to broken icon, icons. So someone told me to download Tweak UI, yeah, it worked, but it changed them to Windows 95 icons, not XP.
I've just reloaded my computer, running really well now!But another stick of RAM in it, which made it a lot more usable! I want to try and get rid of my startup icons on the start bar.It really slows it down on startup.I've got System Mechanic, which can manage startup icons, but it's hard to identify,
How to identify the different icons, when using a program which shuts them down on startup?
I wated to modify my permissions on multiple drives at once. i selected them all in my computer, and right clicked and went to properties. I then went to the security tab and windows came up with box saying "Do yu want to reset the permissions on all you're drives" and i clicked yes (big mistake) after a few minsit finished so i came out and my background has disaperred and all the icons. So basicly windows is denied access to all my drives.
When I turn my computer on it goes through all neccessary procedures but when my desktop shows up it freezes there. I can move my mouse around but no icons.
When i turn my computer on the icons don't show up, i can see my desktop pic and the pointer in the middle that's it, what's the problem? i have tried restarting in safe mode but get a blank screen
Is there a way to restore icons in XP/SP2?The problem appears that the HTM or HTMLextension is related to a generic default icon. The HTM-extension opens the link Explorer allright. The well known E icon seems to be missing. The program RESEDIT however shows the E icons in the icons-cache.Whith some applications it is possible to choose, or relate to, another icon Is there a way to repair this error?
I have windows xp Home ed.When I UNINSTAL programs there are icons still hiden in the taskbar. If I right clik on the taskbar, then I choose PROPERTIES, then TASKBAR, then CUSTOMIZE, there they are, divided in two sections: "present items" and "past items". How can I get rid of them, especially of the past ones? But if possible of the present ones too?
I cant get rid of Quicktime or Safely Remove Hardware. They are always there I have done the Right Click/Customize Notifications and then selected always hide to each but makes no difference I have also made the others i want to see always show and this still doesnt rid me of these pesky icons?
I would like to add some icons to the task bar on the bottom of the monitor. For some reason, they just don't want to stay there, keep jumping back. Have a Compaq Presario, windows, home, xP, sp2
I have a PC running win xp and it recently crashed and as a result I had to re-install windows and since then everything appear to be ok apart from the fact that the icons on the desktop are over laying one another. If I right click the desk top and select 'arrange icons by' it makes no difference whatever combination of setting I chose for the desk top settings.
