My icons were recently messed with when starting my compute. For some reason, they are gone. Do you know how I can recover these? Furthermore, when I do click on the C or D drive, it directs me to file search. Thought if I right-click on the disk and click on open, I can continue as usual.I tried going though system restore, but the last and only available date is at 3:52 AM today.
My control panel has changed from a page full of icons to a long dropdown strip of small icons with there lables. There is no obivous way in to alter anything.
i have searched everywhere to do this , no site seemed to know how to get rid of it so i am helping the troubled with this problem, well not really a problem but an adjustment..it is a piece of cake. first right click on the desktop, go to arrange icons by ,uncheck lock web items to desktop(bang it's done).
I started my computer today and all of the icons pointing to Microsoft Office files, Adobe Acrobat files, and similar files have been replaced by generic windows icons (white icon with little window in the middle) they are no longer program specific icons.Yes, I have tried TweakUI to rebuild the icons and it did nothing, I have tried increasing then decreasing the size of the icons to attempt to force windows to replace them with the correct icons and that has not worked either. I have also tried to use system restore and that did not help either. This is really making me angry and I don't understand why it happened I have searched everywhere for a solution and found nothing.
Down on the bottom of my desktop this thing keeps hidding my icons. I click on the little arrow to show hidden icons and they show for a second then they . disappear. I would like to see them.
After a malware infection (Inet2 and SpySherriff - which took over my desktop) I cleaned up some files, directories and registry-entries. Now, after the cleaning activity as explained by techguys, everything seems going well. All programs do start without problems (through the start-menu or the quick-start taskbar), but there is a small drawback: my desktop screen shows only my wallpaper, there are no icons. The right-mouse click on the desktop also doesn't work (although the desktopsettings are accessible through the control panel). I use WinXP pro. what is wrong and how do I get the icons back on the screen?
XP with SP2. Start> All programs. Almost all of the program icons are now generic icons. Can I get the program icons back? Also, some of my desktop icons have become generic.
I just upgraded from 2k to XP. On 2K i could have all my desktop icons and icons for programs i use down on the task bar above open applications. Im sure theres a way to do this on XP so i dont have to go to my desktop or the start menu every time to open a new program.
When everything disappears...the computer is unusable...whatever you are working on has to wait for icons and tasbar to come back !? This only takes a few seconds but happens every time I run a full screen program such as a photo slideshow, etc.
I've run chkdsk, sfc /scannow, spybot, panda on-line scanner(which dropped a sample virus on my machine just for fun), spybot, ad-aware, microsoft anti-spyware beta, avast anti-virus, ccleaner, spywareblaster, ...

The Hard Disk Drive Icons in the "My computer" folder changed from an XP look and feel to a Win 98 look and feel. I right clicked on the Icon but I cannot change from there. Does anyone know how to change back the icons?
How do I get my windows xp icons back? They are completely messed up. First they all changed to broken icon, icons. So someone told me to download Tweak UI, yeah, it worked, but it changed them to Windows 95 icons, not XP.

I want to try and get rid of my startup icons on the start bar.It really slows it down on startup.I've got System Mechanic, which can manage startup icons, but it's hard to identify,
How to identify the different icons, when using a program which shuts them down on startup?
I wated to modify my permissions on multiple drives at once. i selected them all in my computer, and right clicked and went to properties. I then went to the security tab and windows came up with box saying "Do yu want to reset the permissions on all you're drives" and i clicked yes (big mistake) after a few minsit finished so i came out and my background has disaperred and all the icons. So basicly windows is denied access to all my drives.

Is there a way to restore icons in XP/SP2?The problem appears that the HTM or HTMLextension is related to a generic default icon. The HTM-extension opens the link Explorer allright. The well known E icon seems to be missing. The program RESEDIT however shows the E icons in the icons-cache.Whith some applications it is possible to choose, or relate to, another icon Is there a way to repair this error?
I have windows xp Home ed.When I UNINSTAL programs there are icons still hiden in the taskbar. If I right clik on the taskbar, then I choose PROPERTIES, then TASKBAR, then CUSTOMIZE, there they are, divided in two sections: "present items" and "past items". How can I get rid of them, especially of the past ones? But if possible of the present ones too?
I cant get rid of Quicktime or Safely Remove Hardware. They are always there I have done the Right Click/Customize Notifications and then selected always hide to each but makes no difference I have also made the others i want to see always show and this still doesnt rid me of these pesky icons?
I would like to add some icons to the task bar on the bottom of the monitor. For some reason, they just don't want to stay there, keep jumping back. Have a Compaq Presario, windows, home, xP, sp2
I have a PC running win xp and it recently crashed and as a result I had to re-install windows and since then everything appear to be ok apart from the fact that the icons on the desktop are over laying one another. If I right click the desk top and select 'arrange icons by' it makes no difference whatever combination of setting I chose for the desk top settings.
when I used the "Sent To" icons inside explorer, there were about 6 items to choose from, such as "Desktop (create Shortcut)", "Mail Recipient"...Now when I right click on a file and select "Send To", the only icon that appears is "(A 3 1/2 Floppy".Where did my other "Send To" icons go and how do I get them back?
I was playing with services but this seems to be affecting both of my hardware profiles... It wasn't happening last night, it was only today. I have restarted several times, tried different profiles and different user accounts and all icons are still like this
Is there a way to put an icon like the Explorer icon in Windows 98, at the lower left hand corner in XP? I have a client who refuses to upgrade to XP and this is one of his biggest complaints
I am having an Icon in the Task Bar that pops up: "Your Computer Is Infected" and goes to a website: www.necessaryupdates.com, and to www.spyfalcon.com?
I came home last night and got back on my laptop. When I turned it on some message came on after I put in my password, something about programs, then my screen came up with all my icons. My background pic that I had was gone, it was now Gateway, (like it reset itself), so I went into my pictures to reset it and all my Pictures, documents, etc are gone. I have no idea how to retrieve them. I did a full virus scan, and there is no viruses, etc on it, so can anyone please tell me whats going on? Another thing that I noticed is everytime I turn my laptop off, and turn it back on, everything I did as far as changing my homepage is gone as well, even all the sites I just visited, like it keeps resetting. Someone replied with a link that gave me some things to do, but none of it worked. I did system restore and it said nothing has been changed, I tried doing new user account but nothing is transferring to it.I have no idea how to retrieve these files. All the icons are there, but everything is gone from them.
I'm sorry for posting so many questions here. But my Windows XP operating sytem isn't displaying icons when I download new items. Instead I have to right click > properties > change icon > OK. Instead of automatically installing the icon, it shows this:on the desktop. It displayed a similar image for virtually everything in the start menu too. This meant I had to install every single icon in the start bar menu manually! What is causing this? How can I fix it so it automatically displays icons for newly installed items?
In WinXP,Explorer I have 4-5 instances of My Documents and subfolders.I posted about this several days ago and someone said I could safely delete all instances that were shortcuts. How do I tell which folders are shortcuts? On the desktop the icons look different.I can tell no difference in Explorer.
