I've gone and set all the icons in my System tray, lower right corner, to ALWAYS BE HIDDEN, yet they keep coming back. Is there a registry tweak I can use? I'm using XP Home on a Compaq Laptop V5000.
View 2 RepliesThis is on my husbands computer. He is running xp home version on a pentium 3. The icons at far right in the system tray are stacked up and I cannot get them straightened up in a line like they were. Taking up a lot os space at the bottom now. I have tried dragging them(no luck) I can get them to auto hide but I am not happy with that either. It is probably something simple that is not coming to me.

Lately, it's been like playing a slot machine, sometimes taking 8 or 9 reboots to get all the Icons to show up. I've tried every conceivable combination of actions available after I R-Click the bar, to no avail. All I want is to see each and every icon in the tray everytime I boot up with no excaptions.

View 3 Replies View RelatedCustom desktop, two 250 GB HD, Intel2 duo @ 2.33 GHz, XP. I bought this computer just last week so I am in total immersed in learning 10 hours a day. (Also have a new laptop running Vista - I must be a masochist).
I'll be bombarding you with questions in the weeks ahead. How do I remove unwanted icons from systray?
1) The HP printer icon is useless. There is no option to remove it from systray in properties.
2) The green icon is a "Safely remove device" service that refers to an earlier mistake I made installing my printer. I have no idea how to get rid of it.
I'm willing and capable of doing Registry hacks if necessary.
I have a few icons in my systray that I'd like to stop loading
1. A double monitor icon with a big red cross, that when hovered over displays '' Local area connection, a network cable is unplugged ''
2. Volume button.
3. Safely remove hardware button.
I'm running Xp and I seem to be missing my volume control and battery status icons in the systray even though it is checked to display them in their respective control panels. I've tried unchecking, rechecking and applying and their is no change.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy internet connection is working fine. I have the checkbox for don't display whether connection is connected or having problems. But something weird is going on. After I come back to the computer after a while, there are multiple local area connection icons in the systray indicating that there is a cable unplugged. But my internet is working and I can't find any other local connections in network places. The other weird thing happening with those little icons in the systray is that when I try to hover over them with the mouse to right click on them to see where they are coming from, they vanish as soon as I hover over them. There will be a row from 2 - 6 of them, they al vanish as I hover across the lot of them.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I went to start up my computer (HP Pavilion 750n, 768 MB RAM, 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor) yesterday, there was no power. I took it to the local repair shop. The tech said it was the power supply again (the second one I've had in 6 months). He replaced it with a non-HP power supply. It boots up and all the programs are functioning, but when I do the START>SHUT DOWN>SHUT DOWN, it just reboots. I did some investigating and found a work around for this (right click on MY COMPUTER>PROPERTIES>ADVANCED tab>STARTUP and RECOVERY SETTINGS>unchecked AUTOMATICALLY RESTART under SYSTEM FAILURE). I'm still concerned about why the icons in the SYSTRAY can't be hidden now.

Now, no matter how many times I drop it in the recycle bin, and then empty the bin, or right click and delete it, or delete it from windows explorer. It keeps coming back It will be gone for a while... and then even within minutes. it just shows back up.

View 10 Replies View RelatedMy computer had a file that I wanted to remove but instead got this message:Cannot delete file: Access is denied.The file is in use by another program or user.I was told to install unlocker to remove the file. I right-clicked unlocker on that file and it said there is nothing to be unlocked so I deleted the file through the unlocker options. I checked the recycling bin to see if it ended up there but that file was not in the recycling bin. I thought nothing of it and assumed it's gone for good but after I restarted the computer it came back. I also scanned and removed all the bugs from my computer but still no use. It keeps coming back. Although the file keeps coming back it contains nothing and takes up 0 space.

So now when i click on uninstall on it in the 'add/remove programs' window, it does nothing but stay there. This must be because its still in the registry. The program is called 'Micrografx'.

Now, after the cleaning activity as explained by techguys, everything seems going well. All programs do start without problems (through the start-menu or the quick-start taskbar), but there is a small drawback: my desktop screen shows only my wallpaper, there are no icons. The right-mouse click on the desktop also doesn't work (although the desktopsettings are accessible through the control panel). I use WinXP pro. what is wrong and how do I get the icons back on the screen?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I start my PC the only thing that appears is the wallpaper and the mouse arrow which does move but no right click. I've tried SafeMode and get only the words Safe Mode in four corners so I can't do a system restore. I've tried restoring to last known good configuration but I get the wallpaper again.The only thing I can think of doing is a full restoration but I have 300 itunes on my hardrive which are paid for.
If anyone has an idea how to get my programs & icons back, I'll try anything.
Win XP Home SP2. I have applications that should and did have icons in the taskbar. They are no longer there. Also, when I check the box for having an icon in the taskbar for Windows features like the speaker (volume control icon), it is ignored by windows. I am not a newbie, I know about hiding inactive icons, etc... I do not have hiding icons selected at all. I have checked and unchecked, started and restared the computer and the apps to try to trick windows into showing the icons, all to no avail. This happened when I removed a couple of Security applications: Comodo Firewall and Spyware Terminator. Both had HIPS enabled. The icons were there before I removed these apps, now they are not. I have subsequently reinstalled new versions of theset two apps.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just ran AVG, no malware, ran Ewido, found ''Trojan.Icq smiley.e'' that I deleted, ran Ad Aware, no malware.I have windows set for VIEW details and at tools/folder options, use windows classic folders, and APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS. This works properly until it decides NOT to work properly and reverts to showing ICONS.
In the past 3 days, this has happened about a dozen times. For no reason I can figure out, it just jumps back from DETAILS to ICONS in the folders.
Ever since I installed XP SP2 my Trash Can Icon is missing and the network places icon was never ever there from when I installed XP (few days ago). I miss my icons! Why aren't they there and why do they refuse to come back?

View 13 Replies View RelatedI go to appearance tab and change the size of my fonts under the desktop icons. I change the font size to 12. I click apply and it changes the fonts to 12. When I reboot, the fonts go back to the original 7 size. What do you think overrides the change.

I've upgraded the firmware on the drives, checked the connections etc but still nothing. Weirdly audio cd's seem to show and work in Itunes so I'm guessing it might be to with associations right or have i disabled a service by mistake?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI did an AVG Rootkit scan which turned up "c:windows/system32/userinit.exe" as a dodgy file. I removed it and now the machine won't login when I boot the system. With a bit more digging it seems that this file was actually the login information within the registry and as it can't find a valid user/password it just keeps asking me click the user name and login. When I click it just loops back and throws back up the window, asking me to click the user name again.How I can access the registry and reset the userinit.exe file?I've tried selecting "last good configuration" which didn't work.I also tried to download Bart PE on another machine (running Vista) to set up a boot CD, but it wasn't particularly clear how to go about it, so I tried using the XP System Recovery app on the install disks. This got me into a C: prompt.
