Had to reboot. when it restarted, I got a blue screen of death. pushed the on button and rebooted. View 2 Replies View Relatedjust booted and installed windows xp SP1. I have 4 other computers connected to a working wireless router, with this computer connected by an ethernet cable. The cable is working properly, because my laptop can connect to the network through it. I need to connect to the internet on my new computer to run updates, download latest drivers, etc...basically getting this beast ready to start installing my favorite programs and games. But, when I plug the ethernet cable into the port on the mobo, windows doesnt detect it. There is no LAN option in the 'Network Connections' folder, but a '1394 Connection'. View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a Western Digital laptop hard drive for my HP Presario X1015US laptop - and got the part where it said : Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on my computer. I have tried two new drives now and it is simply not getting past this point. I have gone in to the bios to ensure it is booting from Windows Operating System CD and it is still not finding. HP told me I have to check motherboard? Is there anything else I can do or am I going to need to buy a new laptop (the old hard drive is no longer working...started making weird noise).
Every time I try to open a web link from my screen I get an error message that says "Windows cannot find, http// ... make sure you typed name correctly ...". Option is to click on OK, but right after message appears it will open the page and I can open all the other net links normally, but not internal pages until message is gone. I've re-installed Firefox. Only thing I haven't done is re-install windows.

However, the file does open in notepad behind this error message and I am able to view it, edit it, etc.
I would like this error message not to appear every time (it is really just an annoyance to cancel it every time but after a couple of years I am tired of it) so I tried to find this answer in the archives but to no avail. However, I saw that it was recommended by more than one tech guy (or gal) to save a "hijack this" file in notepad, so I followed the instructions and did that just after my latest error message... The "hijack this" copy of the notepad file follows, and if you see anything else that I should make note of please let me know....
i apereantly deleted or did something with system32 folder. but if it got deleted should i even be able to use the computer? anyway. i worried about it after i cant find/open windows media player or mspaint. so can it be fixed by entering the windows xp disc and putting repair, do i have to reinstall and delete everything or is there any other way of fixing this?

View 3 Replies View RelatedOk i made an Xp bootable CD. I did this 2 times and I followed all the instructions, burned it in nero as CDROM (boot) with all the correct settings. I downloaded the XP boot record (bin file) and I used that as the boot image.However, when I use this on the computer I am tryikng to install it on, it says "searching for Master boot record on CD.." for about 15 seconds on startup and then just boots from the existing hard drive OS because aparently it can't find the boot record.The cds work fine on my laptop, if i put it in and run it after my laptop is already started up, the windows xp menu for installationcomes up fine.never had this happen before so i don't know what the problem is.. i changed the boot priority so it is trying to bootfrom the cd rom, but just cant.

This is only SOME exe's. Particularly, older programs. Word, excel, WordPerfect all work. Older apps don't.

I came home today and found my computer had turned from the sleek silver windows xp theme into the windows classic version. I also have no sound and in the control panel it isn't picking up any audio devices. I cant change the theme back to windows xp in properties either it says im using Windows XP (modified). For the moment I would also like to retain the old disc contents and the xp operating system. To try to do this I installed a second hard drive and cloned the old drive c: to the new drive f:. I created a dual boot computer by editing my boot.ini file so I could boot from either the c: or f: drive. I replaced my primary hard drive with a new drive and booted up in the f: drive. Then I cloned the f: drive back to the new c: drive creating a dual boot system. My concern now is that if I reinstall windows xp on the newly installed hard drive, the Dell installation disk will wipe out the operating system and the contents on the f: drive. Is there any way to retain the old system? I'd appreciate any help with this.

To do it without using the cd it has to copy the installation files to the computer and then run them. When setup does this it creates a new choice of an operating system to boot from called "Windows XP Setup." So now I have a Windows XP and a Windows XP setup. The only computer that can see shared files is my moms with the windows 2000. theres 3 more computers all running windows xp. how do i fix this? File sharing is now available, but I myself believe the internet is being slowed down. THe Internet gateway that windows XP is picking up is reading 8.0 mbps. My connection has gotten as high as like almost 2, but it should not read that.
