View 14 RepliesFor some reason my start menu no longer shows Recently Used Programs or Recently Used Documents. All other MRU lists seem to be working properly, just these two are blank. I tried clearing or setting it to display 0 programs, then restarting and setting it back to 6 but it still doesn't show.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy computer at work has been recently upgraded from Windows 2000 to XP. Funny thing is that the Internet Explorer icon (not a shortcut) doesn't show on the desktop. When I right click on the desktop to open the display properties and select the IE icon to be displayed, it still doesn't show on screen. I can only find shortcuts. They're not what I need because when you right click on a shortcut, the IE properties don't show (so you can't delete history or cookies).
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently reinstalled XP Pro and my HDD drive letters are all screwed up. I hear you can remap the drives within Windows, but I'm not sure how. Is it possible? If not I'll just reinstall and unplug my storage drive and that'll solve the problem. System in question is in my signature.

(the 2 little flashing computer screens inthe bottom right hand corner near the clock) The trouble is she uses these to disconnect from the internet and at the moment restarts her computer each time she wants to disconnect. Its driving me nuts trying to find the right menu to turn them back on and I'm probably being blind. If someone could give me some info it would be most appreciated by me and my mum. She's running XP professional and has not yet installed service pack 2.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI am using Windows XP Professional on an IBM ThinkPad T 42.To clean up a folder a day or two ago I added a sub-folder and used drag and drop to put the 19 files in the primary folder into the subfolder. Today when I tried to open various files from the 19 I discovered that two of them would not open. The message I get when I click on the file icon is this: This file could not be found, followed by a couple of absurd recommendations for resolving the problem.

There is an icon called Set Program Access and Defaults and when I click on it it tells me "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". This is a private home computer, not on a system. Though I am a regular computer user I have few technical skills and may have entered an incorrect command.

I am running Windows 2000 pro on an old Compaq. Norton was up-to-date just before problem started: Before Xmas a windows auto update came through. I shut down before it had completed. When I turned on next morning, a sort of error message came up - "would I like to log on in any case", sort of thing - and I stupidly pressed OK. Next thing, everything on the D drive was fine, but on the C drive all my files had disappeared. Icons up as uusal, but most of them did nothing when you pressed them. I can access the internet, but no way can I get into Outlook Express. Event log only shows one error which is OMCI failed to load.
Spoke to Norton to try a remote scan, but the PC would not let me lower the security settings to allow this - just kept bouncing back to medium security level. Gave the PC to a local "Specialist" who acheived zero. Im sending this on my old PC. I really do need my old files back if possible., rather than just buying a new PC! Ideas please (tailored for a compete non-techie)!! It occured that I could create a system restore point (perhaps on an external hard drive) and then start playing in the registry, but am a complete PC moron so am rather (very, actually) nervous about that.
I am experiencing this problem with my CD-R/W driver. I have windows XP and 2000 both installed on my system. The CD Drive is visible from windows 2000, but when i go to windows XP, i dont see the CD Drive there in My Computer. It used to be there earlier, but then it disappeared. Normally when some bad CD is inserted, it disappears ,but it appears again on restart. Now its not appearing altogether !!! I know that its driver is the cause. Will I need to download a driver for it ? What might be the reason? Howcome it is functioning okay in Windows 2000?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just turned my computer on today, and out of the blue it seems my secondary hard drive has committed suicide. It had only one NTFS partition covering all 300GB, but now its one FAT partition a little under 2GB plus tons of unallocated space. I have no clue how this happened, but would like to get back as much data as I can. Whenever I run an undelete program, it looks at the partition, not the drive, so it only sees 2GB of nothing and can't see any files.

View 16 Replies View RelatedTo set the icon of any drive (hard disk, cd rom or anything else) with a letter (C: etc.), run REGEDIT (Start -> Run -> regedit) Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer
If one doesn't already exist, create a new KEY called "DriveIcons". Under this key, create a new key with the letter of your drive. I.e. C for your C: drive. To change the icon for that drive, create a key inside that one called DefaultIcon and set the path of (Default) to the location of your icon eg CDefaultIcon hen (Default) = D:DocumentsC Drive Icon.ico To change the name of that drive, create a key in the drive letter one (eg C) called DefaultLabel and set the (Default) to what you want the drive to be called. This is useful if you want to assign a long name to the floppy drive.
I use internet explorer and I have windows xp. Recently the internet went down. While everything else could work, every time you went to open a web-page it said there was no connection. The only way to rectify the problem was re-install Windows. However in an attempt to make sure the problem didn't occur again, some programs were deleted via ad-aware. Immediately the internet was unavailable again. Another re-install was required and I was back on the net. I tried to re-install Norton and it would stop half-way through, saying it couldn't finish installing. After trying to delete some stuff, Norton still couldn't be installed and after turning off the computer for the night and switching it back on the next day the internet again required a re-install to work. Can anyone help me work out what is wrong, and what I can do to stop it happening again. Also, I recently switched internet services from inbuilt dial-up modem to external ADSL Modem. But I had no problem for at least a month.
