For some reason my start menu no longer shows Recently Used Programs or Recently Used Documents. All other MRU lists seem to be working properly, just these two are blank. I tried clearing or setting it to display 0 programs, then restarting and setting it back to 6 but it still doesn't show.
The icon on my c drive has recently disappeared. I'm not exactly sure when this happened. Everything works find, there's just no icon. anyone know how to fix this?
I have an HP Pavilion and couple of programs are missing from my desktop which even not getting rectified after re installation of windows xp but i am able to access to the internet and now have to reinstall my printer and scanner.
The "All Programs" selection has disappeared in the menu. This is on my friends computer, which has XP Pro. I use HE, so I'm not that familiar with the nuances of Pro, so it may just be a setting that's unique to Pro. He has the other selections on the menu, and the desktop icons, and also can get the programs to list if he switches to the "Classic Start Menu" on the taskbar properties menu. But on the regular XP menu, there's a space where the "All Programs" selection would be, but it's blank. And hovering the pointer over that space still does not bring it up.
Since the listing of the programs DOES show up with the Classic menu, that's why I'm thinking it's just a setting. I've poked around in the Customize>General tab and the Advanced tab, but none of that stuff seems to work (it doesn't seem pertinent to the situation either). Now two other posts that I've made here may be pertinent to this issue.
when I started it and logged on the computer all my files were missing and some of the programs had dissappeared. I checked and made sure I was logged onto my account and not the guest one. I restarted the computer hoping that everything would just be normal again but instead after watching a black screen for 5 minutes got this message:"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:<Windows root>system32hal.dll Please re-install a copy of the above file."
I was cleaning up my computer today and I think that I accidently deleted a program that I should not have. All the Change/Remove buttons from the Add/Remove Programs listing disappeared. I searched online for solutions and all the questions I found were leading to to the Registry. However, the uninstall folder that I am supposed tobe seeing under Registry/Local Machine/Software/Microsoft/ Windows/Current Version ismissing. How do I make the folder 'UNINSTALL" appearin the registry so that I can bring back the Change/Revome buttons in my Add/Remove Programs listing?
when ever i open up a program and try to intiate opening a file, say i'm trying to author a dvd, and i want to open up the file that i want to work on, well, the whole program disappears, as if i closed it, i thought it might be just one program, but it seems to be a few programs, don't know whats going on
My Paint file disappeared. It use to be listed under ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES but now it is nowhere to be found. It is useful to construct attachments. Can someone help me find it and place it in the START menu again.
I have XP Home SP2 (of course a correct license, and with automatic Windows update). Suddenly the sound on my computer disappeared. The sound card drivers looks okay, but the volume and mixer programs seem to be gone. Maybe some other sound/audio programs and/or dll:s are missing too, I don't know. I can not install them again because the only disc I got from the supplier is a recovery disc so that the computer becomes as new (for 3? years ago), so that is not an option (it would take me a month to update and configure everything again, then). And there are no extra (for install purposes) windows sw on the harddisc. And I cannot find anything useful on Microsofts site and they do not have any useful support service for my problem as it seems. So, I am stuck and now need help from you guys.
I've just taken my brand new desktop system out of the box and there's no Start menu or icons appearing on the desktop. The monitor automatically initiated a startup wizard to select the correct resolution but once that was complete, the desktop was blank (except for the Windows default rolling green hills wallpaper). Not even the mouse pointer is visible. I restarted but after startup it went to the blank picture again. I tried pressing the Windows key on the keyboard, and also tried Ctrl+Alt+delete to get the Task manager but both times nothing happened. All components are plugged in correctly, and I haven't installed any software other than what came installed from the manufacturer (please see specs in my profile); I literally plugged it all in and switched it on.
I use internet explorer and I have windows xp. Recently the internet went down. While everything else could work, every time you went to open a web-page it said there was no connection. The only way to rectify the problem was re-install Windows. However in an attempt to make sure the problem didn't occur again, some programs were deleted via ad-aware. Immediately the internet was unavailable again. Another re-install was required and I was back on the net. I tried to re-install Norton and it would stop half-way through, saying it couldn't finish installing. After trying to delete some stuff, Norton still couldn't be installed and after turning off the computer for the night and switching it back on the next day the internet again required a re-install to work. Can anyone help me work out what is wrong, and what I can do to stop it happening again. Also, I recently switched internet services from inbuilt dial-up modem to external ADSL Modem. But I had no problem for at least a month.
Can somebody tell me what's going on with the newgroups URL's? My PC at home is under WinXP Home SP2. I'm currently on my PC at work under Win2000, 5.00.2195, SP2.For a long time, at home I've had a URL in my Favorites for Communities Newsgroups and it worked fine. For several days now, it has taken me to the usual Microsoft window, with a menu on the left pane, but the right pane has been white with the message "Service temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."
I recently cleared all my cookies. when I visit a site http://cad.chp.ca.gov/ it opens to the Los Angeles area not the bay area as it previously did. I would like to update the cookie or whatever to this revert
My system reboots by itself. I haven't noticed if it does this after the same amount of time each time. I recently reinstalled Windows, I didn't have this problem before. If anybody has any thoughts on what might be causing this

Basically i can play games, watch movies, listen to music, burn DVD's, but the problem seems to start when i simply just browse the internet. after 10-15 minutes i get a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death).

I have a novatech laptop which i have had about one year. Recently when i turn it on , the clock has gained several years. It doesn't hapen all the time, the most recent time it read 12th 0ct 2015. I know how to reset it to the correct time.

My laptop has recently stopped running .exe files. Now whenever I try to run a .exe file, windows prompts me what program do I want to open it with.Does anyone know what's going on here?
I reformatted my pc with Windows XP Professional, slipstreamed with SP3. I've reinstalled all of my drivers (save for my webcam), and now I have no sound. It seems everything is in check, my drivers are working and all but nothing.
I ran an update recently, as well as installed some new drivers (ATI Catalyst and Logitech Webcam drivers). Since then, every two days or so (I suppose something crashes) drwtsn32.exe and drwin.exe (and I think rundll32) boot a billion copies of themselves and continually screw up. How do I disable Dr. Watson? It's really bugging the hell out of me, and it's not like I ever use Dr. Watson's error reports.
I recently reinstalled XP Pro and my HDD drive letters are all screwed up. I hear you can remap the drives within Windows, but I'm not sure how. Is it possible? If not I'll just reinstall and unplug my storage drive and that'll solve the problem. System in question is in my signature.
Windows XP, recently updated, ZoneAlarm, Firefox recently updated, IE6. WebSweeper runs in the background, Windows Firewall is on, I have a router and a modem router.I've reinstalled ZA from scratch before, and of course have run numerous updates, and have never had a problem, until now. This started with some visitors. I created a 'visitors' limited account, and put it in just the 'guest' group. A teenager has had use of the computer. Now, she's mature for her age (14) and her computer use was monitored, so I don't think she did anything intentionally, if she did anything at all.Problem started when one of the adults had the system freeze on her, twice. Once with IE, the other with Firefox. Both times Firefox was up with whatever the teenager had up (beebo?), another window or tab with something else the adult was doing, and msn.com - hotmail - was reported to me as "hotmail froze".
My computer at work has been recently upgraded from Windows 2000 to XP. Funny thing is that the Internet Explorer icon (not a shortcut) doesn't show on the desktop. When I right click on the desktop to open the display properties and select the IE icon to be displayed, it still doesn't show on screen. I can only find shortcuts. They're not what I need because when you right click on a shortcut, the IE properties don't show (so you can't delete history or cookies).
My computer has recently been getting an annoying amount of pop/ups for Winfixer, and WinAntispyware advertisements while surfing the web, but I haven't had it as a browser hijacker. Everytime I delete it from my registry site list it returns. I'm just wondering if what can i do to permanently get rid of this annoying pest. I have run adaware, spybot, spysubtract, AVG, Norton and nothing seems to get rid if this. Can someone run me though detailed steps or excellent free programs that will terminate this forever
The recently used files shortcut does not appear in my start menu. It cannot be solved as per help instructions, because the related command does not appear in the properties dialog box. Actually, the bottom part of the advanced tab is empty. I am using Win XP pro.
I was checking my daughters pc for some usual maintenance. The start programs on list suddenly dont open, computer freezes up, did the error-checking but I cannot seem to get some vital prgrams to open up. I am running a couple of recent worm tools from Symantec and so far, nothing. Could this be a hardware problem or can someone tell me something I am missing?
I reinstalled Windows XP. For some reason, all of my old programs show up in Windows Explorer, but not in the Start Menu or in Control Panel/Add Remove Programs. Is there a way to fix this?
