I am using Windows XP Professional on an IBM ThinkPad T 42.To clean up a folder a day or two ago I added a sub-folder and used drag and drop to put the 19 files in the primary folder into the subfolder. Today when I tried to open various files from the 19 I discovered that two of them would not open. The message I get when I click on the file icon is this: This file could not be found, followed by a couple of absurd recommendations for resolving the problem.
Dell computer from 2001. . I was on the regedit screen, and when I went into one of the HKEY_LocalMachine or one of those HKEY folders, the "Classes" folder got deleted. That's when everything kind of...messed up. Regedit stopped working (asked for an "appropriate program from the list" to use with it) and almost everything stopped, so I had to shut the computer down.
Now when I shut it down and tried to get back on, I couldn't get ANYTHING on the logon screen except a dinky little Windows logo, with no usernames, making it impossible to logon!
how the heck do I get back to the WIndows logon screen with the usernames back? Do I need a special CD I need to purchase, and is there anyway to get back the users without losing all my stuff? Please help. you can post here to help or email me at kobetheman1212@gmail.com
I had a pretty weak virus on my computer named "pe_weird" I believe it was. Basically just an old backdoor virus that I had on a CD with an infected file that I burned a couple years ago. I went to trendmicro and cleaned everything that was infected and deleted some non-essential files, but somehow I think I "cleansed" a file needed to run windows.
Now whenever I click an EXE file, it comes up with the "Open with..." box. Any exe file does that. When I went into control panel to look for system restore (which I hope is the last thing I have to do), any item in control panel that I click pops up the error message "C:WindowsSystem32Rundll.exe -- Application not found". However, when I checked in that folder, Rundll.exe was present, 32.5kb filesize.
I know that this was discussed about six months ago. I dont quite remember the solution. When I attempt to delete multiple files, evertime I click a file for deletion it makes a copy of the file, so that when I delete the file the copy is still present. How can I prevent this in Windows XP Pro.
every time I move files they become access denied, I am the sole user & adminstrator, each time I have had to start in safe mode & regain ownership. I have resorted to doing copy file & then deleting original.
How does one get back Folders and files once you have used the Cut Command instead of delete, I use MS command Cut to delete and move Folders and Files from one HDD to another HDD, Now the HDD that I moved to has crashed. I need to go back to the original HDD and get back those folders and files but I need the folders intact so I know what file belongs to what programs, any suggestions.Help please.I lost a years work of Music Files, from Fruity Loops and also plug-ins that took time to create.I have not touched the HDD since I cut / Moved Files and Folders.
Somehow I lost the icon at the bottom of the screen when I minimize a tab. It used to be at the bottom so I could flip back and forth between applications. How do I get my minimized icons back.
I am running XP and have the Classic Desktop settings, I was working from my external HD and I shut in down and went to open it back up from My Computer and it was not there. I copied and placed another one on the Desktop and it shows as a copy and when I go to rearrange my Desktop to (type)and My Computer does not go where it orignaly suppose to be.
The icon on my c drive has recently disappeared. I'm not exactly sure when this happened. Everything works find, there's just no icon. anyone know how to fix this?
My mother has recently had problems with her pc and i wont bore you with the details but I've managed to sort it out and it seems to be running fine now. However the network connection icon has disappeared. (the 2 little flashing computer screens inthe bottom right hand corner near the clock) The trouble is she uses these to disconnect from the internet and at the moment restarts her computer each time she wants to disconnect. Its driving me nuts trying to find the right menu to turn them back on and I'm probably being blind. If someone could give me some info it would be most appreciated by me and my mum. She's running XP professional and has not yet installed service pack 2.
i use windows xp professional suddenly my 'my computer' icon on the desktop has disappeared.can you please advise how i access/ retrieve my local disk drives.
I have a few folders in my 2nd partition giving me this error "folder is not accessible, access is denied." They contain 3 very large 3-4gb files that were working right before I tried to organize them and move them to a different directory (cut and paste). I've tried disabling the simple file sharing and gaining access to them again, but it won't work.
I have a PC that had numerous defunct users, some from old defunct workgroups. I thought I'd consolidate. I moved a bunch of files and folders to a current users folder and deleted the defunct files and folders. I did this in Explore, loged in as Administrator, because these defunct users were from a previous defunct workgroups and did not show up in User Accounts/ControlPanel. As administrator I can read and wrtie to these files, but the user can't. I have marked these folders as shared and given permission to do everything to them, but the user that need them still can't write to them. As Administrator, I have assigned him to the powerUsers Group in the Users account/ControlPanel.
In my secondary hard drive there is a folder which has been created when I installed some updates to windows (D:43faad86bcdc943f32928891). My problem is that I have by mistake moved a folder containing thousands of private photos and irreplaceable files into that folder which I can't access anymore. When trying to move my pictures folder back it says that I don't have permission to do that.I have latest Windows xp updates. I think a proper solution would be to change the permission of that folder so I can access it and I don't know how to do that. I am an admin so I should be able to access it?
One of my users reported that their icon text had disappeared. I went to check things out and it looks like all text in Windows had disappeared as well! Buttons, icons, drop down menus, etc.User said they hadn't gone anything recently and that the PC was just like this after being off for five days (yeah right ).
My Ghost 10 'quick launch icon' has disappeared? I opened the program/options/tray icon/enabled 'show system icon' rebooted, but it still is not there?Could a registry cleaner be responsible for this I wonder?
I have Window XP operating system and can no longer access the control panel. The icon is no longer available on my Start Menu. There is an icon called Set Program Access and Defaults and when I click on it it tells me "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". This is a private home computer, not on a system. Though I am a regular computer user I have few technical skills and may have entered an incorrect command.
I was up a couple of nights ago installing some dodgy software when I realised some files had just disappeared into thin air! What's funny about this is that all of the folders are still there - so if I go into my Music folder, I can see 800 subfolders but not ONE file
I have a friend that recently did a System Restore and files that were stored on a partition other than where Windows is installed are now gone! I was under ther understanding that System Restore only effected the system drive and not other partitions.
when I started it and logged on the computer all my files were missing and some of the programs had dissappeared. I checked and made sure I was logged onto my account and not the guest one. I restarted the computer hoping that everything would just be normal again but instead after watching a black screen for 5 minutes got this message:"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:<Windows root>system32hal.dll Please re-install a copy of the above file."
I've had 'Show All Hidden Files and Folders' enabled for a long time now, but all of a sudden all of of my hidden files disappeared. They weren't deleted, since they are still viewable via cmd (attrib or dir/a). So I went to 'Folder Options', and saw that 'Show All...' was still enabled.I tried to 'Hide All...' and then 'Show All...' again, but then I saw that after setting it to Hide All and re-entering Folder Options, that 'Show All' was stuck on enabled. Restarting didn't solve either problems.Scanned my PC with Registry Mechanic, Ad-Aware, Spybot - S&D, and NOD32. still nothing.
I am running Windows 2000 pro on an old Compaq. Norton was up-to-date just before problem started: Before Xmas a windows auto update came through. I shut down before it had completed. When I turned on next morning, a sort of error message came up - "would I like to log on in any case", sort of thing - and I stupidly pressed OK. Next thing, everything on the D drive was fine, but on the C drive all my files had disappeared. Icons up as uusal, but most of them did nothing when you pressed them. I can access the internet, but no way can I get into Outlook Express. Event log only shows one error which is OMCI failed to load.
Spoke to Norton to try a remote scan, but the PC would not let me lower the security settings to allow this - just kept bouncing back to medium security level. Gave the PC to a local "Specialist" who acheived zero. Im sending this on my old PC. I really do need my old files back if possible., rather than just buying a new PC! Ideas please (tailored for a compete non-techie)!! It occured that I could create a system restore point (perhaps on an external hard drive) and then start playing in the registry, but am a complete PC moron so am rather (very, actually) nervous about that.
i have a problem with i assume windows xp when i switched on all the writing has disapeared on my files in my files even on explorer but these type of open windows are ok
Yesterday I decided to cut and paste a 1.3 gig folder from one partition to another on a seperate drive. The file transfer proceeded, however, after a couple of minutes a message appeared saying it couldn't move the folder as it was currently being used by another program. I closed notepad which was the program involved. I then went to the partition where the folder was originally kept but the folder was not present. I went to partition where I had attempted to move the folder and found the folder but it was completely empty. Somewhere on my drives is 1.3 gig of infornmation in about six files,
when ever i open up a program and try to intiate opening a file, say i'm trying to author a dvd, and i want to open up the file that i want to work on, well, the whole program disappears, as if i closed it, i thought it might be just one program, but it seems to be a few programs, don't know whats going on
After my pc has been infected by the "bagle prague" (hldrrr/wintems/flec006/srosa) i got cleaned by a software called Regrun. But the malwares have left some problems on my pc. The main problem is : In Control Panel / Folder option / View, i cant find the options related to "show hidden files". In this forum there is a solution already posted, but it didnt solve my problem.
I'm experiencing some problems with my operating system (win xp). This picture is pretty descriptive: Basically, all of the icons have turned white and although I can open all of the files without any problems, I can't turn off the PC. Every time I click on the shut down button, nothing happens. I think all of this happened because of StyleXP, a program which I've downloaded today, but got rid of pretty fast. The problems started after uninstalling StyleXP. I don't know what to do right now so that's why I had to ask for help here.
My friend is getting the above message when trying to boot up he has xp home. I cannot get into the bios or safe mode. There are 2 options press f1 to continue or del for setup neither works because the keyboard does not work. I have tried a keyboard that I know works and get the same message. His dvd rw drive is also not working but that is nothing to do with this problem its never worked for a while even before this problem. It is computer made by tiny which went out of business, he has a reload disc but with the drive not working cant use it. Unless I can get hold of my sons usb external rw drive which I will try to do tomorrow. I dont know if it will work though as the computer is not going very far into the post. I have to put the reload disc in whilst attempting to boot up. I am thinking this could be a hardware problem,He had problems with his ps/2 ports a while back so his keyboard is connected by a usb to ps/2 adapter.
