D Drive Has Disappeared
Mar 8, 2005This started happening yesterday....my D drive keeps disappearing. Dell Latitude Laptop
Win 2000 Pro, I go to the My Computer Icon...and it is gone? Anyone know where it might be hiding?

After Update C Drive All Files Disappeared
Dec 28, 2006I am running Windows 2000 pro on an old Compaq. Norton was up-to-date just before problem started: Before Xmas a windows auto update came through. I shut down before it had completed. When I turned on next morning, a sort of error message came up - "would I like to log on in any case", sort of thing - and I stupidly pressed OK. Next thing, everything on the D drive was fine, but on the C drive all my files had disappeared. Icons up as uusal, but most of them did nothing when you pressed them. I can access the internet, but no way can I get into Outlook Express. Event log only shows one error which is OMCI failed to load.
Spoke to Norton to try a remote scan, but the PC would not let me lower the security settings to allow this - just kept bouncing back to medium security level. Gave the PC to a local "Specialist" who acheived zero. Im sending this on my old PC. I really do need my old files back if possible., rather than just buying a new PC! Ideas please (tailored for a compete non-techie)!! It occured that I could create a system restore point (perhaps on an external hard drive) and then start playing in the registry, but am a complete PC moron so am rather (very, actually) nervous about that.
CD Drive Disappeared, Visible In 2000
Feb 9, 2005I am experiencing this problem with my CD-R/W driver. I have windows XP and 2000 both installed on my system. The CD Drive is visible from windows 2000, but when i go to windows XP, i dont see the CD Drive there in My Computer. It used to be there earlier, but then it disappeared. Normally when some bad CD is inserted, it disappears ,but it appears again on restart. Now its not appearing altogether !!! I know that its driver is the cause. Will I need to download a driver for it ? What might be the reason? Howcome it is functioning okay in Windows 2000?

May 15, 2005I looked through the add and remove program box ,and i found this one program AdWARE & SPYware. How would i be able to get rid of this program ?. I've already downloaded an Anti-virus protector called Kaspersky Anti-virus Personal pro 5.0. I've already scanned my computer and it found 2 viruses. I don't know if this program i am using to scan my computer for viruses works or not. I've never heard of the program, but it's been recommended by many.

Jan 9, 2007I just turned my computer on today, and out of the blue it seems my secondary hard drive has committed suicide. It had only one NTFS partition covering all 300GB, but now its one FAT partition a little under 2GB plus tons of unallocated space. I have no clue how this happened, but would like to get back as much data as I can. Whenever I run an undelete program, it looks at the partition, not the drive, so it only sees 2GB of nothing and can't see any files.

Oct 7, 2006I added another 150G hard drive last year to my computer...it worked just fine for almost a year and then when I was defragmenting I got a message saying a file was corrupted and since then that drive has vanished from my computer It was labeled G and I had it almost filled and now no matter what I try computer doesn't acknowledge the drive anywhere I look...if I run the defragment program it doesn't even show the G drive and in Windows Explorer nothing shows for that drive either

Jul 16, 2005I have just upgraded my M/b, CPU & RAM. Went through the (painful) procedure of re-activation (how many digits ). Had to do a repair install to get XP to boot. While booting I noticed that the 'chasing lights' on the Windows flash screen had reverted back to green instead of blue, which indicates that I no longer have SP2 installed. Visited MS Update. Was told SP2 was already installed. However, I have no icon for Security Centre either.

Sep 28, 2008I was using the internet when suddenly the window closed and everything disappeared from my desktop (task bar, start button, desktop icons..everything leaving just the background). Didn't get any error messages or warnings either. I tried clicking on the desktop but got no response so I pressed ctrl, alt, delete, to restart. But when it restarted I got an empty desktop again and it wasn't until the 4th time restarting when everything was there again. I then opened internet explorer and it wouldn't respond. On the fifth time restarting, everything was fine but half an hour later I got the empty desktop again and had to restart 5 times again. Is this a virus? How to I get rid of this problem since it was running fine before this.

I can get to it from a straight explorer, but it's gone from my Start Menu and any program now that opens a "Select Folder" type dialog opens My Network Places and My Computer cannot be accessed.Note I keep it off my desktop, but even if I try to re-enable it on the desktop (Display-->Desktop-->Customize Desktop, Select it, OK), it doesn't work. He was cleaning his keyboard off and he must have hit some kind of key combination, because all his desktop icons disappeared except for the My Computer and Recycle Bin ones. I believe there is a way of reinstalling Win XP without losing existing programs ans data.
