All of a sudden my CD drive and my new DVD burner are gone. They are still there but it is as if they were unplugged from my PC but they were not unplugged. I did some Windows Updates recently. Tried System Restore and it did not work. When I go into "My Computer" the 2 drives are just gone.

I have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers. It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".
I recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem. - I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery. - I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install. - I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help. - I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters. - i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios. I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.
My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. Uninstalled with Revo Uninstaller
I am using Windows XP Professional SP2 on an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe MB. I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.
I work for a fire department and they have Desktop Authority map certain network drives when they login. For some reason, DTA will map the drives when they login, and everything works fine, but after an hour or two, they lose connectivity to that drive and are no longer able to access it. I know this is very vague, but has anyone had this problem?BTW, I just recently upgraded from NT 4.0 to Server 2003 Standard, and we've had tons of other little problems with permissions and the like. Is this the cause of the dissapearing drives?
I have just upgraded my M/b, CPU & RAM. Went through the (painful) procedure of re-activation (how many digits ). Had to do a repair install to get XP to boot. While booting I noticed that the 'chasing lights' on the Windows flash screen had reverted back to green instead of blue, which indicates that I no longer have SP2 installed. Visited MS Update. Was told SP2 was already installed. However, I have no icon for Security Centre either.
I'm using an IBM NetVista, Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.80GHz and one night, powers went out. And when I turned my PC on, USB ports aren't working. To my surprise, at the device manager, USB section was gone. It was undetected, or w/e.
This started happening yesterday....my D drive keeps disappearing. Dell Latitude Laptop Win 2000 Pro, I go to the My Computer Icon...and it is gone? Anyone know where it might be hiding?
fro no known reason my sound has disappeared. I am running Dell, xp home dimension 3000 machine. I have gone to the control panel, opened sound and audio devices. The boxes are all gray on the sound tab so unable to access anything.
I was using the internet when suddenly the window closed and everything disappeared from my desktop (task bar, start button, desktop icons..everything leaving just the background). Didn't get any error messages or warnings either. I tried clicking on the desktop but got no response so I pressed ctrl, alt, delete, to restart. But when it restarted I got an empty desktop again and it wasn't until the 4th time restarting when everything was there again. I then opened internet explorer and it wouldn't respond. On the fifth time restarting, everything was fine but half an hour later I got the empty desktop again and had to restart 5 times again. Is this a virus? How to I get rid of this problem since it was running fine before this.
for some reason my pictures have changed to quicktime but when i try to open them get a message i do not have the right importer. what has happened. on my desktop i have a photo from my pictures but when i try to use the screensaver it says there are not any photos in my pictures help.
I don't know how it happened, but "My Computer" has disappeared. I can get to it from a straight explorer, but it's gone from my Start Menu and any program now that opens a "Select Folder" type dialog opens My Network Places and My Computer cannot be accessed.Note I keep it off my desktop, but even if I try to re-enable it on the desktop (Display-->Desktop-->Customize Desktop, Select it, OK), it doesn't work. When I go to Customize Start Menu, It's Listed as "Display as a Menu" but won't show up Kindof wierd? My guess is some line(s) in the Registry got erased somehow
so my task bar has disappeared and i have no idea why. everything else on the computer seems to be running fine except for this annoying issue.actually i tried to do a system restore to the last time i remember it working but the computer couldn't do it.
My bookmarks all of a sudden have disappeared on me. I did nothing out of the ordinary last night, shut off my cpu, went to bed, woke up this morning andvoila
All of my desktop has disappeared and i can only use my computer by pressing ctrl alt delete . i have had this problem for nearly a week now and i have no idea how this happened.
This happened to one of my co-workers yesterday. He was cleaning his keyboard off and he must have hit some kind of key combination, because all his desktop icons disappeared except for the My Computer and Recycle Bin ones. I guess he had a bunch on there that he needed, but couldn't find them. They weren't in the Recycle Bin and a file search didn't turn any of them up.
I thought I was typing a word doc one day.Only to glance up long enough to see that I wasn't typing in the right spot and all of a sudden after hitting return the icons bilnked and disapeared? This did happen on a XP machine.
Just been trying to fix granddaughter Computer (had 47 Trojans!!!) one could not be removed until reboot (used Spy-Bot) rebooted and now there are no icons on the desktop, but can get programs to run by using task manager . I believe there is a way of reinstalling Win XP without losing existing programs ans data.

I tried changing the default icon set using StyleXP and now all my icons are blank. I linking to an image so you guys can see what i'm talking about below. I tried changing back, uninstalling styleXP, doing a system restore, running a registry cleaner, and rebuilding the icons using TweakUI but nothing works.
