I tried changing the default icon set using StyleXP and now all my icons are blank. I linking to an image so you guys can see what i'm talking about below. I tried changing back, uninstalling styleXP, doing a system restore, running a registry cleaner, and rebuilding the icons using TweakUI but nothing works.
View 2 RepliesThere are a few things that contributed to the leadup to me losing my Device Manager and sound. First, about 3 weeks ago, I bought 2 sticks of Mushkin EM3200 DDR RAM (two 1GB sticks; 2GB total). Installed it, and it disagreed with my board in a big way (apparently it was the voltages or timings). I managed to get as far as "Verifying DMI Pool Data..." before I got one of two error messages: "NTLDR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." or "Windows failed to load because the System32 folder is corrupt or missing." In each case, I popped in my Windows XP disc and fixed the boot record from the recovery console (I did not restore the MBR), and it booted right in.
At the time, Windows booted up just fine, but lately I've been having some funky problems. I've got one SATA drive (partitioned into two) which is my boot drive and one IDE drive that I just use for storage. Sometimes, with my IDE drive plugged in on boot, I can't get Windows to load by any means. Sometimes it boots just fine. When it boots fine, and I go into "My Computer" (either via the Start Menu or the icon on the desktop) it takes about 20-30 seconds to actually display anything (I get either the flashlight-over-folder animation or it just doesn't load). With my IDE drive unplugged, I get no such issues.
As well, the first couple of times I restored the boot record, I had no issues with sound at all. Then suddenly Windows started saying I had no sound device (my volume icon had disappeared, and the "Sounds and Audio Devices" menu in the Control Panel showed no output/playback device) although I clearly do have one. The weird thing is, I still got sound. Then I updated my sound card drivers (it's onboard sound; Realtek AC'97, pretty standard fare) and lost sound completely. All I get now is motherboard/PC speaker beeps. So I attempted to check the Device Manager to see if maybe there was just a device conflict. I say attempted because my Device Manager was completely blank. And I mean completely. All it showed was the title bar, menu buttons, and a white page. Nothing else. Zip.Just ran out to work and got an Audigy for $30 thinking it may just have been my onboard sound kicking the bucket. Installed it, booted up and tried to install the drivers. The driver installation program detected no Audigy in my machine (and I thought it wouldn't because Windows didn't pop up with the little "Found New Hardware Wizard" when I booted).
All of my desktop icons except for the recycle bin have disappeared? Why? and how do I get them back?

He was cleaning his keyboard off and he must have hit some kind of key combination, because all his desktop icons disappeared except for the My Computer and Recycle Bin ones. I guess he had a bunch on there that he needed, but couldn't find them. They weren't in the Recycle Bin and a file search didn't turn any of them up.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSome 20 shortcut icons on my screen and the last time I booted up they had all disappeared. Going through IE/Desktop they are all there. I have tried dragging them from the desktop window to the desktop screen but that is not possible as the destination is the same. I have tried right clicking the desktop screen and creating a new shortcut the new shortcut is created but only in the desktop window and not on the screen. It slows things down when there is no icon to bring up the Internet and other favourite programmes and there is no Recycle Bin.
View 8 Replies View RelatedWin XP Home SP2. I have applications that should and did have icons in the taskbar. They are no longer there. Also, when I check the box for having an icon in the taskbar for Windows features like the speaker (volume control icon), it is ignored by windows. I am not a newbie, I know about hiding inactive icons, etc... I do not have hiding icons selected at all. I have checked and unchecked, started and restared the computer and the apps to try to trick windows into showing the icons, all to no avail. This happened when I removed a couple of Security applications: Comodo Firewall and Spyware Terminator. Both had HIPS enabled. The icons were there before I removed these apps, now they are not. I have subsequently reinstalled new versions of theset two apps.

I believe this happened after the Microsoft updates early November but that may be just a coincidence. The programs are still running when I check in services and I am just wondering why this is happening. View 8 Replies View RelatedIn the Explorer folders in my Windows XP Pro, suddenly, I no longer have the icons I normally use--such as X for delete, and the cut, copy, and paste icons, which are mainstays of my work in the Explorer panels.
When I right click in the upper panel of the folder and open the customize panel, I put the icons I need at the top of the folder. Yes, I know that the panel on the left in the folders has many of the functions that the icons serve, such as delete, rename, etc. BUT... after I put all the icons I need at the top, as soon as I close and reopen the folder, the icons have disappeared!!What is going on? How come? Home come I can't set the icons I need for all Explorer folders at one time??I'm hoping someone can help me fix this!

View 12 Replies View Relatedrecently I loaded up my computer, logged inunder my user profile (I'm running Windows XP SP2), Everything looked normal until the system completed loading and my wallpaper icons vanished (Wallpaper stays), My start button & Task manager bar vanished as well(including the clock).I logged out of my profile, and was able to use the profile I had set up for my mom for about a day... but then her profile did the same thing. I tried my daughter's profile and everything is gone.When I looked in my listing of what applications are running, I've noticed that my explorer.exe is gone.
This is frustrating. The last time I shut the computer down everything was fine. Today my wife used it for Market Day and LTD then went offline and put it to sleep.When I woke it up, the 1st thing I noticed was that the desktop Tetris icon was black. The shape was there but it was black. I tried to change the icon in the shortcut properties and saw the correct icon there but it kept turning black when I applied it. Then I went to My Computer. Wow. Most of the icons were gone and replaced by that MS arrow icon. There was even a folder that wouldn't come up or show anything.Well, lets see. My system is 1 year old and is a generic one. View 10 Replies View RelatedI live 4 states away from my little brother, and his computer is in dire straights. When we boot it up, he gets a blank desktop, no icons, no taskbar, no start menu. If we attempt to access programs via task manager (ctrl alt del) then we get the "Task manager has been disabled by the administrator. I need to know where to start so we can begin taking care of this mess. We can get into safe mode, and task manager will let us in, but I'm lost after that step. I've had him run a couple of cracks that are supposed to fix the registry, but they dont help when we reboot into normal windows. Someone lend me a hand and let me know what we need to do.

It still has the icons on it, but there is no picture, only white.I went to the Windows XP Control Panel and made sure that a theme was selected and it was. View 6 Replies View Relatedxp boots past the login screen, but doesn't display any icons, taskbar or start button. On ctrl/alt/del and task manager - new task, I can run some apps. If I try to run explorer.exe I get 'cannot find....path not found...etc'.If I run cmd prompt, I can change to c:windows and dir for explorer - it's there but size is 1008640 bytes. I rename it to .old and run sfc which puts explorer.exe back - size 1004032 bytes. Now new task - explorer.exe loads my desktop icons, taskbar, and everything else. This is fine until I reboot, and then the problem recurs. Each time explorer.exe is replaced with the bigger file.
View 3 Replies View RelatedUsing PC and surfing the net, I left my PC for 2 mins and when returned the screen was blank, I have tried turning off and on, but each time the PC starts up, my icons flash on the desktop for a split second then it goes blank again, even if I just turn the monitor off, once turned back on the icons flash up for a split second then it goes blank again. My biggest worry of all is all the kids photo's and video clips I have saved on the PC and about 2 years ago my PC crashed due to a problem with the hard drive and we lost all our memories.

The windows search icon is displayed for 10 seconds or more while loading the control panel, search or help utilities. I am using Mcafee security suite and fixcleaner for security virus and malware protection. These programs show a clean system. Also desktop icons are blanked out for at least a minute when leaving programs. When the icons fill in the system operates fine.

After I click and drag a few programs from a folder onto the background of the desktop, some programs still remain in the folder and they also are coppyed to the desktop, and some other programs are earased from the folder and are placed on the desktop. (So in other words, some of the files are "dulplicated". Some program icons still remain in the folder and on the desktop, and some are only on the desktop and not in the folder.)

All my desktop icons will disappear along with my task bar for a few seconds then reappear. then nothing will happen as if i never clicked it in the first place. View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter a few days of work, the user cannot open new windows explorer or other application windows. Nothing happens if she tries to. If she closes one window, then she's able to open a new one. The "allowed" number of opened windows varies from time to time, sometimes being as low as 4, but sometimes around 10 to 12. The performance tab in the task manager is completely blank (see screenshot). Some Windows explorer menu bars sometimes are blank, and a windows logo appear instead of the menus (see screenshots).
Rebooting fixes the problem, but it comes back a few days later. The laptop is part of a domain, running generally the same applications as other desktops and laptops in the domain, running the same antivirus, etc. The virus definitions are up to date, and a full scan has been run. Even stranger is the fact that when it happens, Windows XP doesn't even seem to be unstable, nor does it crash in any way. Just seems as if there was a limit on the number of processes or handles or threads allowed to run.

Swap file: initially set to 2046 mb and max is set at 4092 mb
Processor scheduling and Memory usage are both set to "Programs"

tried to back up("burn" ) some files onto a cd but it is not recognizing when
I put a blank cd in the drive. Also, in properties it shows that the drive
is full...this is with the blank cd!
