Blank Menu Bar In Explorer And Blank Performance Tab
Nov 10, 2008
After a few days of work, the user cannot open new windows explorer or other application windows. Nothing happens if she tries to. If she closes one window, then she's able to open a new one. The "allowed" number of opened windows varies from time to time, sometimes being as low as 4, but sometimes around 10 to 12. The performance tab in the task manager is completely blank (see screenshot). Some Windows explorer menu bars sometimes are blank, and a windows logo appear instead of the menus (see screenshots).
Rebooting fixes the problem, but it comes back a few days later. The laptop is part of a domain, running generally the same applications as other desktops and laptops in the domain, running the same antivirus, etc. The virus definitions are up to date, and a full scan has been run. Even stranger is the fact that when it happens, Windows XP doesn't even seem to be unstable, nor does it crash in any way. Just seems as if there was a limit on the number of processes or handles or threads allowed to run.
Laptop: IBM Lenovo Thinkpad (model 63716NF)
CPU: Core 2 @ 1,8Ghz
RAM: 2 gb
OS: Windows XP sp3.
Swap file: initially set to 2046 mb and max is set at 4092 mb
Processor scheduling and Memory usage are both set to "Programs"
I have been searching the web for solutions but cannot find any forum post describing the same problem. Thank you for any help.
I have an XP SP2 pc that when I click on Start -> All Programs the Menu is blank and locks down. Everything else seems to work just fine, but the blank menu stays up and is unresponsive. I have run extensive spyware/virus scans with up-to-date definitions that have found nothing.
When accessing different web sites that has a drop down menu (i.e. trying to buy something online and the web site is asking you to input your CC information and provides you a drop down menu to select which country your from and/or a expiration date), the selections are blank. It appears that there is something there for me to select (As if it's White Font on a White Background
After updating my version of iTunes this afternoon I was of course prompted to restart my laptop (an HP Pavilion dv6000), which I did. However upon start-up I noticed a variety of Windows menu texts to be completely missing - that is, the dialogue boxes and other such usually-text-containing shapes came out (albeit somewhat abnormally usually, often shortened to a few pixels) with no text in it at all. Internet pages themselves show up just fine, but any other text associated with internet explorer itself (i.e. tab and toolbar titles, dropdown menus like 'Page', etc.) is text-blank (icons still remain though, which helps a little)
as you can see from the picture my start menu has no "recent used" programs. you are probably thinking it is related to the theme i am running on my computer, but nope i had this problem before installing this theme. although previously i did have windowsblinds installed on my computer, and during this the problem occoured.
i have tried system restores and every one i try says its unable to do in properties for the start menu
HEY,my desktop is compltely blank,i read d previous post but cudnt figure it out how to restore d desktop.thers no start menu,i cant rightclick on desktop, cannot read the content in cd/dvd/pen drive by using the windows task manager but can run installed programs that were there before desktop crashed.
A family member ran Norton Anti-Virus and an XP error message came up saying that XP needed to be reinstalled. I don't have a backup disc or a Windows XP disc. I read in another post "The system should have at least come with the setup files located on a hidden partition on the hard drive." Does anyone know how to access this? I can still get into programs and whatnot through pressing ctrl+alt+delete, clicking Applications and New Task. Then I browse for whatever I want to open, i.e. AOL etc. But XP has otherwise completely disappeared off my desktop. All that is there is the background. No taskbar, Start menu, or anything. It won't right click either. I tried System Restore, no luck
I installed Windows XP on my computer, but when I got to restart / cut it on its just a blank sceeen. I can't see nothing like (start menu, my computer,etc..) What have I done and how do I correct it ?
Having displayed the 'Welcome' screen during power-up, my computer (Dell D0926 Dimension 2400) then proceeds to my desktop (the picture that I chose, rather than, for example, a black or blue blank screen). There are a few egg timers, and the arrow is present, but no icons appear whatsoever.
This is not a desktop recovery error. While using the computer, for example using IE on the internet: all of my desktop icons and access to anything ie. start menu and right click on desktop no longer works. I can continue using the IE open window, but to get my other programs back I have to shut down. The desktop wallpaper still remains.
tried to back up("burn" ) some files onto a cd but it is not recognizing when I put a blank cd in the drive. Also, in properties it shows that the drive is full...this is with the blank cd!
I'm working on recovering a machine from a month-long period of time during which it was completely overrun with spyware and virues. Currently, I have the following issues to contend with: System Restore can only be activated or deactivated via direct registry edit. When you try from the System Properties window, it simply tells you that an error occurred and to try a restart. The advanced start menu options are blank. There are no options to turn off or on things like "Show Network Connections." The options can be turned on in the registry, but the options are missing altogether from the 'rt-click-on-the-start-button' process. Any instance of IE that is open shows in the taskbar as "Windows Explorer," rather than Internet Explorer.
An interesting problem has come up recently. If I try to open My Computer to access some file or what not, instead of bringing me to the list of drives, I get a blank white space. It never loads. From here, I can Cntrl Alt Delete and clearly see that the CPU usage is at 100% and that it is Explorer that is taking up 99% of it. I end the task of opening my computer, and then I try again and everything is fine until maybe five minutes later when the problem reoccurs. I have run virus checkers and adaware and neither has shown any problem
when i boot up my computer and log onto a user, the wallpaper shows up and that is it. I tried pressing CTRL + ALT + DLT but nothing shows up, except for the mouse. I am not able to access anything on my computer except for when i'm in Safe mode. So I tried system restore and rolled back it back to previous checkpoints. It worked for a while, and that was it.
I turned on my comp to find a blank desktop. The wallpaper appears but there is no taskbar and no desktop icons. This is the same for each user on the system. I was able to start the task manager and run a command prompt from there which allowed me to run some programs but not windows explorer. My system restore also seems to have been turned off and all restore points removed.
I managed to run a virus check with AVG free edition which detected an executable file 'charlie.exe' in the my pictures folder for two of the users saying they were trojans 'trojan horse backdoor.generic8.fjs'. AVG deleted these but, as I suspected, did not cure the problem. I have also run adaware but this never detected anything other than a handful of tracking cookies. I have downloaded Hijack this V2.0.0, but will wait for advice before posting a log.
I've messed up something to do with Internet Explorer. First of all, when I open IE all I get is a blank page. No error message or anything. I try to go to a site and the address bar stays at "http:///". I tried repairing my Windows 2000 installation and it didn't help at all. Now it's reverted back to IE5 and Outlook Express 5. So I tried to reinstall IE6 by downloading the installation file and running it. I get the error message:Error creating process <COCUME~1WILLIA~LOCALS~1TempIXP000.TMPie6wzd.exe/S"Cocuments and SettingsWilliam OverbyDesktopIE6.0 FullIE6SETUP.EXE">. Reason: The system cannot find the file specified.
Yesterday I burned a dvd perfectly. Today I try it and alls I get is Blank CD message. I've tried like 20 other blank dvd's and the same problem keeps happening. If anymore information is needed I'll be glad to supply that.
My internet homepage is currently set to about:blank and no matter what I try, it won't go away. The internet and the whole system are slower and there are pop-ups galore. I have used the programs About:Buster, Ad-Aware SE, Spybot SD, and of course Hijackthis (after getting it analysed) but to no avail. It always comes back. What can I do to get rid of it? Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot. Here's my HJT log:

I just transacted a purchase on-line and want to chat with a sales rep. When I enter my purchase code and hit submit, I get a blank box titled about:blank - Microsoft Internet Explorer. Is this spyware or what? How can I resolve this issue?
Every time I make a home page on my internet explorer and close the page, when I reopen it goes back to "about:blank" Yeasterday I also got redirected from the google search results to other places.
I have been having a problem with a "blank icon" that pops up on my desktop. I'm sure it's from Real Player, and I can't get rid of it unless I completely uninstall Real. This is a description of the blank icon...YOUR-78D053ADA8/DESKTOP BLANK.I have run Ewido, CCleaner, Reg Mecanic,Trend Micro Anti-Spyware,Avast, and whatever it is comes up clean.
When I set the screensaver as "none", there is a black screen as the screensaver. How do I set it as NOTHING, meaning there is no screensaver (not the black blank screen). It used to be like that.. and I use to leave my computer on all night and still see the desktop.
Hey my screen will go blank like it's starting up the screen saver after a few minutes on my PC. Then it will go back to what i was doing can i fix this?
I'm running Windows XP. When I boot the system all I get is the background. No icons, no taskbar, no Start button. I ran Spybot, Adaware, AntiVir. I also ran HijackThis and here are the results: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 12:06:15 PM, on 3/11/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)

My computer is having some trouble. When I try to boot it up I get nothing from the monitor(LCD). This happened a while back and all I did was took the power cord to the monitor out, and plugged it back in. It worked like that for 2 months or so. Today he calls me and he is having the same problem. So again I unplugged the cord and replugged it back in. I got signal but it immediately went blank again. It will only work for 1 second. What could be causing this do you think? I hooked up two other monitors to his computer also. One of them (older one not sure if it works 100%, wouldn't see why not) would BOOT up fine, then once you got to login it would go black, and do exactly what the LCD did. I could unplug it plug it back in for some video. Then I brought over my monitor. It works 100% and I didn't get any video at all with it. I tried other power cords/outlets etc. What do you guys think it could be?
