I have an XP SP2 pc that when I click on Start -> All Programs the Menu is blank and locks down. Everything else seems to work just fine, but the blank menu stays up and is unresponsive. I have run extensive spyware/virus scans with up-to-date definitions that have found nothing.
View 1 RepliesAfter a few days of work, the user cannot open new windows explorer or other application windows. Nothing happens if she tries to. If she closes one window, then she's able to open a new one. The "allowed" number of opened windows varies from time to time, sometimes being as low as 4, but sometimes around 10 to 12. The performance tab in the task manager is completely blank (see screenshot). Some Windows explorer menu bars sometimes are blank, and a windows logo appear instead of the menus (see screenshots).
Rebooting fixes the problem, but it comes back a few days later. The laptop is part of a domain, running generally the same applications as other desktops and laptops in the domain, running the same antivirus, etc. The virus definitions are up to date, and a full scan has been run. Even stranger is the fact that when it happens, Windows XP doesn't even seem to be unstable, nor does it crash in any way. Just seems as if there was a limit on the number of processes or handles or threads allowed to run.
Laptop: IBM Lenovo Thinkpad (model 63716NF)
CPU: Core 2 @ 1,8Ghz
RAM: 2 gb
OS: Windows XP sp3.
Swap file: initially set to 2046 mb and max is set at 4092 mb
Processor scheduling and Memory usage are both set to "Programs"
I have been searching the web for solutions but cannot find any forum post describing the same problem. Thank you for any help.

I am using Windows XP/SP2 a newish computer and some things changed from how it used to be.From the *Start* Button, there is the further button *Programs*. This then has the fly-out menu which used to open only the most recently accessed programs. Typically, after a boot it would show the items which opened in *Start-Up*, the rest were accessible only by hovering the mouse cursor over a button showing downward pointing arrows (more chevron like). This would then open the entire sub menu of programs to choose from. However, in the past week it now opens in that expanded view all the time. There is no sign of the little arrows anymore, and I always end up with a screen full of program lists whenever I go to Start/Programs.

However upon start-up I noticed a variety of Windows menu texts to be completely missing - that is, the dialogue boxes and other such usually-text-containing shapes came out (albeit somewhat abnormally usually, often shortened to a few pixels) with no text in it at all. Internet pages themselves show up just fine, but any other text associated with internet explorer itself (i.e. tab and toolbar titles, dropdown menus like 'Page', etc.) is text-blank (icons still remain though, which helps a little)

View 2 Replies View RelatedA family member ran Norton Anti-Virus and an XP error message came up saying that XP needed to be reinstalled. I don't have a backup disc or a Windows XP disc. I read in another post "The system should have at least come with the setup files located on a hidden partition on the hard drive." Does anyone know how to access this? I can still get into programs and whatnot through pressing ctrl+alt+delete, clicking Applications and New Task. Then I browse for whatever I want to open, i.e. AOL etc. But XP has otherwise completely disappeared off my desktop. All that is there is the background. No taskbar, Start menu, or anything. Currently, I have the following issues to contend with: System Restore can only be activated or deactivated via direct registry edit. When you try from the System Properties window, it simply tells you that an error occurred and to try a restart. The advanced start menu options are blank. There are no options to turn off or on things like "Show Network Connections." The options can be turned on in the registry, but the options are missing altogether from the 'rt-click-on-the-start-button' process. At this time the hidden icons on the taskbar open and close extremely slowly
when operated.
I found a temporary fix by deleting anything, so we make a new folder and immediately delete it. This corrects both problems instantly until the next reboot but needs to be done separately for each user that logs on.
At the top of my Add/Remove Programs List I see a blank listing. It is 3.71 MB in size, it reports as being used "frequently" even though it says it was last used 3/5/2006.Odd.I don't know what would be causing this, any ideas?May I mention that there is NOT a button for change/remove program.

View 3 Replies View RelatedEverything in the start menu all programs is gone. I can't find things like Paint anywhere. The recycle bin has disappered off my desktop. All I did was uninstall yahoo! mail, yahoo! toolbar, dell media experience, yahoo! extras, and mtv optimizer off my computer. And I tried to uninstall the sims 2, but it didn't uninstall and i can't figure out how to do that. Then i noticed that the recycle bin had disappered off my desktop. So to open applications like calculator, paint etc. i just fire up run using the key comb 'windows key'+'R' and type calc or mspaint. How can I do that for new programs i install like VLC or Winamp? An example of non microsoft program that does this is Textpad. I just type 'textpad' for launching it. I'm wondering where does the 'run' command look for when i type a program there. I'm sure it looks some where else beyond the system path because textpad.exe is not there in the %path% but it still works.

Something has been eroding the quality of my PC.I lost the ability to access programs through the START menu (I have to seek them out via Win Explorer).Now when I am on-line (Internet Explorer) and I click on a link, it usually (not always) freezes and I have to shut it down via Taskmanager.I cannot run a full virus scan because I have a damaged Intel file that causes the PC to freeze whenever the scan touches it. But I do run Ewido and Spybot (fast scans). I used to have McAfee via AOL, but it was KILLING the speed of my PC (start-ups were painful).

usually whenever i run programs the shortcuts would be left on my start menu. so say after running several programs, like for example, adobe audition, divx player and ccleaner, on the start menu would appear the programs which had just been recently run.if i right click the start menu and go to customize, i can select the number or programs to be displayed on my start menu.so yup, usually the recently run programs would display but then it disappears like it emptied itself from the menu.so my question being is, whats up with my start menu and why does the recently run programs list keep disappearing.
