I do most of the stuff using keyboard. So to open applications like calculator, paint etc. i just fire up run using the key comb 'windows key'+'R' and type calc or mspaint. How can I do that for new programs i install like VLC or Winamp? An example of non microsoft program that does this is Textpad. I just type 'textpad' for launching it. I'm wondering where does the 'run' command look for when i type a program there. I'm sure it looks some where else beyond the system path because textpad.exe is not there in the %path% but it still works.
I am using Windows XP/SP2 a newish computer and some things changed from how it used to be.From the *Start* Button, there is the further button *Programs*. This then has the fly-out menu which used to open only the most recently accessed programs. Typically, after a boot it would show the items which opened in *Start-Up*, the rest were accessible only by hovering the mouse cursor over a button showing downward pointing arrows (more chevron like). This would then open the entire sub menu of programs to choose from. However, in the past week it now opens in that expanded view all the time. There is no sign of the little arrows anymore, and I always end up with a screen full of program lists whenever I go to Start/Programs.
I reinstalled Windows XP. For some reason, all of my old programs show up in Windows Explorer, but not in the Start Menu or in Control Panel/Add Remove Programs. Is there a way to fix this?
On the desktop, I dragged a folder to the edge to make it become a menu popup. That's fine, except that it pops up instantly whenever the mouse touches the edge (which is often for me). Is there a delay setting that will change it to delay so that I must hover a second before it activates? I tried the common add MenuShowDelay to HKCUControl PanelDesktop tweak and it doesn't affect it, just the start menu.
I have an XP SP2 pc that when I click on Start -> All Programs the Menu is blank and locks down. Everything else seems to work just fine, but the blank menu stays up and is unresponsive. I have run extensive spyware/virus scans with up-to-date definitions that have found nothing.
Everything in the start menu all programs is gone. I can't find things like Paint anywhere. The recycle bin has disappered off my desktop. All I did was uninstall yahoo! mail, yahoo! toolbar, dell media experience, yahoo! extras, and mtv optimizer off my computer. And I tried to uninstall the sims 2, but it didn't uninstall and i can't figure out how to do that. Then i noticed that the recycle bin had disappered off my desktop. And so had everything in "all programs" on the start menu.
When I click Start on my Windows XP menu, and then All Programs, the menu does not expand! I can not chose anything from All Programs menu. I have tried some disk maintenace and registry maintenace programs, but it does not help
I just installed windows xp professional on a compaq desktop. The programs part of the start menu however refuses to come up. I know it is not empty because I can right click on it and view the contents. What might be the problem here?
I'd like to modify my start menu. What I see is:Some of the programs I have recently run are at the bottom left of this menu. I have no idea what rules determine which programs get there, and which programs don't. I can drag one of these programs above the line so it stays all the time. This is where my browser and e-mail program can be checked to appear when I modify properties. How do I:Get a program that doesn't currently appear on these lists after I run them to appear (or not to appear)?Move a folder that I use a lot to this menu?
Something has been eroding the quality of my PC.I lost the ability to access programs through the START menu (I have to seek them out via Win Explorer). Now when I am on-line (Internet Explorer) and I click on a link, it usually (not always) freezes and I have to shut it down via Taskmanager.I cannot run a full virus scan because I have a damaged Intel file that causes the PC to freeze whenever the scan touches it. But I do run Ewido and Spybot (fast scans). I used to have McAfee via AOL, but it was KILLING the speed of my PC (start-ups were painful).
im using windows xp on a computer i just bought recently. im not sure what happened but since last week, the menu on Start > Programs is missing, its totally empty. some other programs, windows media player and my ie also stopped working, the programs hang the minute i open them. i cant access my computer's profile settings or search. I have absolutely no idea what happened.
Running Windows XP Pro SP3. For the past couple weeks when I click on START/ALL PROGRAMS the programs menu comes up for a few seconds and most of the time before I can select a program the menu disappears from the screen. I know of other ways I can get to the program I want so I am in no big panic. This problem is frustrating.
I admit I love adding new programs. Unfortnuately I can't see all my programs as they disappear off the right hand side of the screen. How do I get them all on screen? Also, my show desktop icon is "missing".
After launching Start Menu and then All Programs button my PC will freeze up if I move my mouse off of the Program columns to desktop on the right.I did not have this problem when the PC was new. I believe it happen after a automatic download
usually whenever i run programs the shortcuts would be left on my start menu. so say after running several programs, like for example, adobe audition, divx player and ccleaner, on the start menu would appear the programs which had just been recently run.if i right click the start menu and go to customize, i can select the number or programs to be displayed on my start menu.so yup, usually the recently run programs would display but then it disappears like it emptied itself from the menu.so my question being is, whats up with my start menu and why does the recently run programs list keep disappearing.
I've googled this until I'm worn out. I have too many programs in the right-click "open with" menu. Is there any way to remove some? a program maybe? I've posted in other forums and some of the help I get has me reading thru a dozen pages of detailed instructions.
When I click on the START menu, why is there no path for me to be able to look at say, C:/my documents/my pictures etc...There is nothing there like it is in other Windows programs I have used. Also when I right click on a program and try to "pin to start menu", there is no option for that, only the shortcut option.
When I turn my computer on it opens in my documents. I have no desktop icons and no start menu. The only thing I see is my desktops background picture. When it opens in my documents, I can click on my desktop and the items are in there, so I can access the internet that way. When I shut down the computer, I hit ctrl+alt+del, and shut it down or restart it from there.
In Windows XP, the Windows Explorer application is found under "start/programs/accessories". I clicked on the application listing there and dragged it on to my desktop. There is now an icon on the desktop for it, but it has disappeared from the apps listings in "start/programs/accessories". How can I restore the program listing there?
When I first installed XP the start programs menu would fly out to the side and have several columns all visible at once and somewhere along the line it got changed so it is a scrolling list now, which is a real pain when you have a long list. Does anyone know how to change it so it flys out to the side with multiple columns instead of the scrolling list?
The problem is this. On a network. Upgraded from NT to XPsp2. Used old profile desktop admin. When XP startmenu (simple) is used, clicking on the All Programs does not pop up all the rest of the programs (they are there, in the right place). shortcuts in /documents and settings/%userprofile%/Start Menu/programs/ When classic menu is used, no shortcuts appear above the line (shortcuts in Start Menu root -- /documents and settings/%userprofile%/Start Menu)
2005 MCE WIN XP, if i go to START, ALL PROGRAMS, and scan thru my programs, the amount of time to scroll thru programs is about 3-4 seconds, before it closes out, also RENAMING a folder, on desktop, same thing happens, for instance, renaming a folder PICTURES, i get to PIC, then it kicks me out. I have OPtical wireless mouse, replaced batteries with fully charged ones, no difference, also mouse 12 inches from reciever.
When I click on my Programs Menu and it shows my programs the columns are huge. I don't know how they got so big but I would like to make them smaller because there is no room for new installed programs to show in the columns.
all tabs (Tables or whatever they are called) with all the different programs show in three columns. But I have more than that and they don't show all ( have XP). I remember I think in Win 98, I could go into Explorer/Filemanager, then move Programs around into Main Folders in the START folder or a folder of my choosing and make the columns shorter. I don't find where I can do this in XP. I tried as Adminstrator, myself, Guest, nothing works. XP just keeps the way it has decided to show them. I want Office:and its programs, Utilities with its programs, Graphics, Organizers, Toshibastuff, Webstuff, etc, all similar programs in a subfolder to choose from, instead of having to open Explorer to find them, because Windows own Tables don't show them all.
Since installing some minor items this week, all of the items previously found under "All Programs" within the Start menu have disappeared. What happened, how do I fix it, and how do I start programs that used to be there but also have no desktop icon?
I have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk,I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive? I also have another hard drive that I can use to install XP onto. Is there any way that I can rescue the data from the old Hard Drive and transfer to new drive?
Running XP with 'CLASSIC' style menus. When I display PROGRAMS in the START menu, it only displays 3 or 4 items and then it has two Down Arrorws at the bottom of the menu, which I have to click to get the full menu. Is there some setting causing this to happen?
can i create folders to put specific types of progs inside them as my all programs from the start menu is too long and needs tidying up i.e put photographic applications all together in one folder.
