HEY,my desktop is compltely blank,i read d previous post but cudnt figure it out how to restore d desktop.thers no start menu,i cant rightclick on desktop,cannot read the content in cd/dvd/pen drive by using the windows task manager but can run installed programs that were there before desktop crashed.

While using the computer, for example using IE on the internet: all of my desktop icons and access to anything ie. start menu and right click on desktop no longer works. I can continue using the IE open window, but to get my other programs back I have to shut down. The desktop wallpaper still remains.

A family member ran Norton Anti-Virus and an XP error message came up saying that XP needed to be reinstalled. I don't have a backup disc or a Windows XP disc. I read in another post "The system should have at least come with the setup files located on a hidden partition on the hard drive." Does anyone know how to access this? I can still get into programs and whatnot through pressing ctrl+alt+delete, clicking Applications and New Task. Then I browse for whatever I want to open, i.e. AOL etc. But XP has otherwise completely disappeared off my desktop. All that is there is the background. No taskbar, Start menu, or anything. Currently, I have the following issues to contend with: System Restore can only be activated or deactivated via direct registry edit. When you try from the System Properties window, it simply tells you that an error occurred and to try a restart. The advanced start menu options are blank. There are no options to turn off or on things like "Show Network Connections." The options can be turned on in the registry, but the options are missing altogether from the 'rt-click-on-the-start-button' process. Any instance of IE that is open shows in the taskbar as "Windows Explorer," rather than Internet Explorer.

I have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk,I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive? I also have another hard drive that I can use to install XP onto. Is there any way that I can rescue the data from the old Hard Drive and transfer to new drive?
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy computer was running alright, no viruses or anything. Then suddenly, we turn it on one day and its stuck at the hp screen. Not booting, just with the hp logo. I restart it, and after 2 tries, and some beeps, it boots. Gettin all scared and worked up, I run a spyware scan and a virus scan. I found a few trogans and deleted them.
To test it, I turned it off and restarted again. Didnt have any problems. After a few hours it began to beep and got extremely slow. I turned it off. Ever since then, all I've been getting is a blank screen. Its as if its not getting power. The mouse and keyboard dont light up and the screen is blank.
If someone could help me out I'd appreciate it. I've searched the forum but the problems similiar to this that i've found involve the pc actually doing something before the blank screen comes up.
I recently tried to run a destructive factory recovery on my desktop HP Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, which i have done in the past without a problem. For reasons unknown this time the screen was completely blank when it finished. It is as if im looking at a turned off monitor, no signs of any activity what so ever, just a black blank screen. I do not have any type of recovery disc to this computer at this time , though if i get it back up and running that will be the first thing i do. I really dont know what other information I can give about it. The computer is on , the monitor is on but it looks as if it is off.

I was going to install that, but later decided that i would just re install my norton antivirus (because it wasnt do the live update needed). I re installed, and after a nice long full system scan, my system came up clean. I continued using my computer for some time last night, and then all of a sudden, the desktop icons disappeared, as well as the start menu. So what does someone do in this situation? I restarted my computer and tried and to hope for the best. Well, it turns out that restarting the computer allows the icons to pop up for only about 3 seconds, and then they disappear again and im left with my wallpaper.I opened up internet explorer by quickly double tapping the icon when they appeared, but then they disappeared again. So I hit control alt delete, and then started a new task which was called explorer. This brought up the icons again, but only for a few seconds...again. So I ran norton again, but only found 1 tracking cookie after an entire full system scan. I have no idea what to do, but im so sick of paying to get things fixed, and everything has been breaking down on me for no reason.

When the system is doen booting and its get to the ddesktop screen, no icons are avaialable on teh desktop. Nor is the task bar and start menu available. The only way i can use internet explorer or run any program is fromthe task manager and press ctl+alt+del and run. View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been having CPU issues at 100%. I contacted HP.com support and the last suggestion they suggested was to update the video card driver. I have a Nividia GSForce2 MX200 (Compaq Computer) They sent me to a link to their ftp site and I followed the instructions to download, install, and do a restart. When I restarted there were no desktop icons. It probably means that whatever files are damaged are preventing the startup from finishing. The normal internet programs that launch upon starting up the computer are not launched and I have to manually launch them by finding them. I tried doing a last known good configuiration, and when that failed in safe mode I couldn't access the Start Menu to do a system restore. I tried rolling back the driver to the previous one to no avail. I called HP and of course they wanted to charge me since it is out of warranty. I said it was their file and I asked for a supervisor who told the tech to tell me the same thing. So I was stuck with chat support. We were able to try the system restore which didn't work. The monitor automatically initiated a startup wizard to select the correct resolution but once that was complete, the desktop was blank (except for the Windows default rolling green hills wallpaper). Not even the mouse pointer is visible. I restarted but after startup it went to the blank picture again. I tried pressing the Windows key on the keyboard,and also tried Ctrl+Alt+delete to get the Task manager but both times nothing happened. View 8 Replies View RelatedI start my windows xp and it loads fine at first and then gets into loading the desktop and then nothing happens, but just before that a RUNDLL message pops up and says: rvbc1.dll: access is denied, you can click ok or the x on the top right corner, after that the menu dissapears and nothing happens. Actually the start menu you can kinda see flash for about 1/2 a second.I've tried many solutions, I'm in fact working with another guy from techsupportforums.com and haven't gotten anywhere with it. He also says that when he goes to google and searches for something, when he clicks on the search results, he is directed somewhere else. Ok, so we know his browser is being hi-jacked. But this I didn't expect. Look at the screen shot below when I remoted into his PC. No icons, no start button. Customer has XP Home Edition. Right-clicking on the desktop does absolutely nothing. I can bring up the task manager and select New Task, but I cannot run explorer.exe. I just get a permissions error. I was able to install Malwarebyte's, but after scanning for 8 seconds, the program just closes. Now I am trying an online scan to see if that works. I can't access My Computer at all. I really can't even run most programs. After Malwarebyte's closes, I cannot open it again. Not even by typing the exact path in the New Task window. I can open IE, but it won't let me access his hard drive or anything. I just keep getting an error about permissions. Obviously not all his permissions are gone since I am able to install software. But his PC is definitely in bad shape. Unfortunately he lives in CA, and I live in NJ, so I have to do this all remotely.

When i double click on a desktop shortcut i find that the icon goes to the start up menu list( to the left of all programs) as well each time. Is there some way to stop this happening? I don`t really need the same one in two places.
