when i boot up my computer and log onto a user, the wallpaper shows up and that is it. I tried pressing CTRL + ALT + DLT but nothing shows up, except for the mouse. I am not able to access anything on my computer except for when i'm in Safe mode. So I tried system restore and rolled back it back to previous checkpoints. It worked for a while, and that was it.
I turned on my comp to find a blank desktop. The wallpaper appears but there is no taskbar and no desktop icons. This is the same for each user on the system. I was able to start the task manager and run a command prompt from there which allowed me to run some programs but not windows explorer. My system restore also seems to have been turned off and all restore points removed.
I managed to run a virus check with AVG free edition which detected an executable file 'charlie.exe' in the my pictures folder for two of the users saying they were trojans 'trojan horse backdoor.generic8.fjs'. AVG deleted these but, as I suspected, did not cure the problem. I have also run adaware but this never detected anything other than a handful of tracking cookies. I have downloaded Hijack this V2.0.0, but will wait for advice before posting a log.
I changed an IDE controller and need to reactivate Win XP Pro. When I slect the activation wizard, the screen comes up with the title bar and background but not foreground data or choices show, just the blank activation-window background.
Recorded a show onto a RWDVD. It plays on the dvd player fine. I wanted to edit it and then burn to a R disc. BUT, my computer E drive says the disc is blank. Is there any way to access the files via my computer?
For some reason, 1 of my DVD's has become, erm.. strange. There are files on it, but Windows (XPHome SPII, automatic updates) states it's empty. All the other DVD's work fine. This was one of the first DVD's I burned on this machine, round about the time SPII came out.
When I click on the user account tab on the start menu and window pops up, but it is blank inside. I recently deleted some files due to a virus and was wondering how to get the file back to view and access my user accounts.
After a few days of work, the user cannot open new windows explorer or other application windows. Nothing happens if she tries to. If she closes one window, then she's able to open a new one. The "allowed" number of opened windows varies from time to time, sometimes being as low as 4, but sometimes around 10 to 12. The performance tab in the task manager is completely blank (see screenshot). Some Windows explorer menu bars sometimes are blank, and a windows logo appear instead of the menus (see screenshots). Rebooting fixes the problem, but it comes back a few days later. The laptop is part of a domain, running generally the same applications as other desktops and laptops in the domain, running the same antivirus, etc. The virus definitions are up to date, and a full scan has been run. Even stranger is the fact that when it happens, Windows XP doesn't even seem to be unstable, nor does it crash in any way. Just seems as if there was a limit on the number of processes or handles or threads allowed to run.
Laptop: IBM Lenovo Thinkpad (model 63716NF) CPU: Core 2 @ 1,8Ghz RAM: 2 gb OS: Windows XP sp3. Swap file: initially set to 2046 mb and max is set at 4092 mb Processor scheduling and Memory usage are both set to "Programs"
I have been searching the web for solutions but cannot find any forum post describing the same problem. Thank you for any help.
I am trying to install Windows XP Pro on a second hard drive in my computer, but when i insert the disc it says something about setup scanning the system or something of that nature. Then the screen goes blank and doesn't do anything else. The reason why I dont want to just upgrade is because some things I use dont play nice with XP pro and I want a clean install of it. How can I get my computer to install this second OS properly?
When I have either firefox browser or IE6 up and when I minimize my browser or exit out of it, my whole screen goes blank. Every thing from my desktop items and my taskbar disappears for a second or 2. The only thing on my desktop that doesn't go blank is my desktop picture.
There are no icons or taskbar on my desktop, On any account that I log in on. Cannot access task manager or start menu. How do I recover my desktop? This is a dell desktop pc, windows xp
I always liked how in WinXP, in Windows Explorer it shows zip files in the left window, as if they were sub files, allowing their contents to be viewed in the right window with a single click. However, mine has suddenly stopped doing that, zip files now only show up on the right of the screen. Anyone know why this would happen, and a quick fix?
Reformatting a pc of mine to give to my sister. Her old computer had some info on its hard drive that she needed. It was too big to fit on a floppy and the CDROM had died so I took her old drive and hooked it up in the newer pc. The problem is: it shows up in System Devices but not in Windows Explorer. I tried right clicking on My Computer and then Manage to assign a drive letter to it, but it wont allow me. The option for assigning a drive letter isnt even available for that hard drive.
when i try to open my computer from desktop or even certain programs like (ex DAP download accelerator is my default ) they show 'open' on my taskbar but i cant see the open folder. when i right click the tab on my taskbar and click maximize the tab just wizz past the right of my screen but i cant see it just only shows on my taskbar. When i do alt-tab it shows its there but dosent come up so i can see it .
The problem in that desktop is showing up but there are no icons no taskbar no start menu. only wallpaper. pressing alt ctrl del shows up taskmanager but there are no adware or other such processes running up only system processes, i can run programs through it and other things like softwares. last thing she did was paste cliparts from cd to hard drive.
I'm running Windows XP. When I boot the system all I get is the background. No icons, no taskbar, no Start button. I ran Spybot, Adaware, AntiVir. I also ran HijackThis and here are the results: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 12:06:15 PM, on 3/11/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)
When I boot up the system I see the winXP splash screen, then I get an absolutely blank desktop. No icons or taskbar. Mouse pointer is there and responds to movement. Ctrl-alt-del does nothing. When I try to boot into Safe Mode I get the same deal, except I can see the safemode in each corner and the header that tells me which version I'm running. I've tried repair installations and yet still have the same problem. I had a spare hard drive lying around so I put it into the system and then did a fresh install of XP into that with no problems. That drive works fine. I've replaced explorer.exe amongst other system files that I read about in the other posts to no avail. I can read the drive that has the bum version of XP via the fresh install but am blocked from accessing any of the files.
An interesting problem has come up recently. If I try to open My Computer to access some file or what not, instead of bringing me to the list of drives, I get a blank white space. It never loads. From here, I can Cntrl Alt Delete and clearly see that the CPU usage is at 100% and that it is Explorer that is taking up 99% of it. I end the task of opening my computer, and then I try again and everything is fine until maybe five minutes later when the problem reoccurs. I have run virus checkers and adaware and neither has shown any problem
I am having a 'blank' desktop icon added when I exit cbsnews.com. At least that seems to be when it happens. When I right click on the icon it says Type of file: File Description: blank Location: c:Desktopetc Size: 196 bytes Size on Disk: 4.00 kb
I live 4 states away from my little brother, and his computer is in dire straights. When we boot it up, he gets a blank desktop, no icons, no taskbar, no start menu. If we attempt to access programs via task manager (ctrl alt del) then we get the "Task manager has been disabled by the administrator. I need to know where to start so we can begin taking care of this mess. We can get into safe mode, and task manager will let us in, but I'm lost after that step. I've had him run a couple of cracks that are supposed to fix the registry, but they dont help when we reboot into normal windows. Someone lend me a hand and let me know what we need to do.
My desktop on my computer is blank. It still has the icons on it, but there is no picture, only white.I went to the Windows XP Control Panel and made sure that a theme was selected and it was. When the computer reboots, the picture will be on the desktop momentarily, but then it will turn white. The only thing unusual that happened today was some viruses being stopped by my McAfee. After the viruses were blocked, the desktop turned white All programs work and I've run a utility check that Dell provides with the laptop.
i want make a dvd disk for my compaq recovery, but it always shows "this is not a blank disk, please insert a blank dvd?". wut should i do to get a recovery dvd? (i have updated my drive, but nothing useful. i have tested my burner with nero, it works fine.)

How to keep my desktop picture of Stonehenge from leaving, & being replace by just a blank black screen. What is wron with my computer? Want it to stay as Stonehenge, but it continues to just go into black screen.
I have reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2 on my a computer that I built and started to install other programs as usual so that I could use this computer. The Windows Update balloon saying there are updates for your computer(it also claimed that I could work on other things while the updates occurred. So I installed other programs--Photoshop CS2, Quicktime Pro 7, Wacom Pen Tablet software drivers. The Windows Update happened three times. 1st had about 20 different updates, I rebooted with no problems. 2ns had 35 updates including IE 7, rebooted with no problems, 3rd time had 47 updates, rebooted and now my desktop is blank. My Pen Tablet (mouse) works but I don't see any icons or the START bar. My programs still work because when I open the Windows Task Manager and choose New task, I can browse for programs. Surfing thru other threads in this forum, I thought maybe I had a virus or malware.Just have never had any error messages. so I downloaded and ran these program scans: WPFind3u, VundoFix, AntiSuperspyware. Scans came up with no find of malicious stuff, but my desktop was visible afterwards. I've even tried starting up in safe mode. I get a black screen there--no icons on desktop.
Using PC and surfing the net, I left my PC for 2 mins and when returned the screen was blank, I have tried turning off and on, but each time the PC starts up, my icons flash on the desktop for a split second then it goes blank again, even if I just turn the monitor off, once turned back on the icons flash up for a split second then it goes blank again. My biggest worry of all is all the kids photo's and video clips I have saved on the PC and about 2 years ago my PC crashed due to a problem with the hard drive and we lost all our memories.
I've messed up something to do with Internet Explorer. First of all, when I open IE all I get is a blank page. No error message or anything. I try to go to a site and the address bar stays at "http:///". I tried repairing my Windows 2000 installation and it didn't help at all. Now it's reverted back to IE5 and Outlook Express 5. So I tried to reinstall IE6 by downloading the installation file and running it. I get the error message:Error creating process <COCUME~1WILLIA~LOCALS~1TempIXP000.TMPie6wzd.exe/S"Cocuments and SettingsWilliam OverbyDesktopIE6.0 FullIE6SETUP.EXE">. Reason: The system cannot find the file specified.
Hard drive crash, transplanted HD to new computer which now has 2 hard drives, C & D. Problem is I cannot open Windows Explorer from desktop or any other location, from either drive. I get a message that says it "generates errors." And that it is keeping a log, presumably for use on some Day of Judgment. (I get around it for now by right-clicking My Computer and picking Explore from the pop-up menu.)I have gone to the usual download sites in search of WE, no dice.
Having displayed the 'Welcome' screen during power-up, my computer (Dell D0926 Dimension 2400) then proceeds to my desktop (the picture that I chose, rather than, for example, a black or blue blank screen). There are a few egg timers, and the arrow is present, but no icons appear whatsoever.
This is not a desktop recovery error. While using the computer, for example using IE on the internet: all of my desktop icons and access to anything ie. start menu and right click on desktop no longer works. I can continue using the IE open window, but to get my other programs back I have to shut down. The desktop wallpaper still remains.
Windows XP desktop freezes when exiting programs. Also some of windows applications load very slowly. The windows search icon is displayed for 10 seconds or more while loading the control panel, search or help utilities. I am using Mcafee security suite and fixcleaner for security virus and malware protection. These programs show a clean system. Also desktop icons are blanked out for at least a minute when leaving programs. When the icons fill in the system operates fine.
