Reformatting a pc of mine to give to my sister. Her old computer had some info on its hard drive that she needed. It was too big to fit on a floppy and the CDROM had died so I took her old drive and hooked it up in the newer pc. The problem is: it shows up in System Devices but not in Windows Explorer. I tried right clicking on My Computer and then Manage to assign a drive letter to it, but it wont allow me. The option for assigning a drive letter isnt even available for that hard drive.
My primary hard drive crashed and my back up that holds all my pictures, mp3's and other important items is still ok. I reinstalled windows fine on a new hard drive with no problem. My back up hard drive is not showing in my explorer list though. Does anybody know how I may access it? I've installed all motherboard software and it still is not there. I don't wanna reformat that drive unless its the only thing i can do.
I have XP Home version and have had some unusual issue wth System Restore. When I bring up utilities for system restore, it shows drive I as the system drive instead of drive C.I can sort of understand why this might happen because I installed a new 200 gig drive 5 months ago and made my old C drive I. My system tells me that C is my boot drive and I am not having any real problems except with restore. Looks like something is wrong in restor's database.
I am trying to install Windows XP Pro on a second hard drive in my computer, but when i insert the disc it says something about setup scanning the system or something of that nature. Then the screen goes blank and doesn't do anything else. The reason why I dont want to just upgrade is because some things I use dont play nice with XP pro and I want a clean install of it. How can I get my computer to install this second OS properly?
Under Device Manager it shows Other Drivers and under that SM Bus Controller. All of this has a yellow question mark. I am not sure what this means and need to correct. Thanks in advance. OS is Win XPSP2.
Everest shows 3 unknown devices but device manager doesnt?my soundcard dissapeard today, i can still pick it up using "Unknown Devices" and EVEREST although when i try to run audigy 2 drivers, it`s telling me there are no supported devices in the system, anyone know how i can force the REAL device manager to see these devices?it seems only everest and unknown devices is picking up my soundcard, it also says AUDIGY from CREATIVE. it just is not appearing in device manager for some reason so i am unable to actually install it.
I always liked how in WinXP, in Windows Explorer it shows zip files in the left window, as if they were sub files, allowing their contents to be viewed in the right window with a single click. However, mine has suddenly stopped doing that, zip files now only show up on the right of the screen. Anyone know why this would happen, and a quick fix?
I've connected an external USB drive, but when I go to My Computer it shows it as a network drive. In addition, it gives it the same name as the mapped network drive that already exists there. When I change the name of the external drive there, it then changes the name of the mapped network drive, so again they both have the same name, although the drive letters are different. Any ideas how to make the external drive appear where it belongs in My Computer, under Hard Disk drives?
when i boot up my computer and log onto a user, the wallpaper shows up and that is it. I tried pressing CTRL + ALT + DLT but nothing shows up, except for the mouse. I am not able to access anything on my computer except for when i'm in Safe mode. So I tried system restore and rolled back it back to previous checkpoints. It worked for a while, and that was it.
Recently I have not been able to access my flash drive from the USB ports. Whn I check the device manager I can see the drive but it is listed as unknown device. What would be a good fix? I am using XP.
H i have an old 80gb drive that i wish to use for storage by use of a hard drive enclosure. It had an old xp installed on it which ino longer wish to use, but when i hook it up to the pc the drive doesn't show up, i mounted the drive on a linux(ubuntu) system and managed to delete everything except the windows folder, i believe the ntfs file system is stopping it from being deleted, my question is how can i delete the windows folder so that i can format and reuse the drive without putting it into the pc, any further info needed will be duly supplied
Some time ago I booted up my computer,to find that my XP switched to Windows classic style,I didn't take it seriously so I went to properties to change when I get an error message saying there is a problem with run32.dll,not only that, but the visual styles can't load I assume, becuase of run32.dll,so now I'm stuck with the piece of s*** style.
I just bought and connected a WD 160gb Passport External USB Drive. I check the Drive's directory. All's normal. I then installed Portable Apps Suite onto the USB Drive. Now when I check the directory of the USB Drive, I see the files/folders that are supposed to be there, which fine and dandy. But I also see two extra things:
1. Recyle Bin (contents exactly as the one on my desktop. If i empty it, the bin on the USB drive gets emptied. If I delete something on the desktop. The recycle bin on the USB drive shows that too!)
2. System Volume Information AA: How did these two files get there? BB: How do I get them off the USB Drive?
Recorded a show onto a RWDVD. It plays on the dvd player fine. I wanted to edit it and then burn to a R disc. BUT, my computer E drive says the disc is blank. Is there any way to access the files via my computer?
I was repartitioning my slave drive G from 120 to 130 gigs and reformatted other parition of slave F leaving main c alone.MY computer crashed while moving data and when it came back up I get error 1507 bad file record signature and cant use chkdsk or partition magic again since i cant access drive and properties show it listed as raw o data and corrupted or damaged.I tried rescue disks but dint fix it and system restore on whole computer didnt work and chkdsk doesnt even see the g drive
I have recently fitted a Hitachi Deskstar 250gb Hard drive(model:HDS722525VLAT80) to my computer. After Re-instaling windows (xp) the drive was showing as 125gb.I have been told this is because windows xp will only support 125gb without service pack 2.I have now downloaded SP2. but it still shows as 125gb.
I have a Seagate 120gb HD and used the Seagate Wizard Tools that I downloaded from them to ghost (clone) to a new Western Digital 160gb HD. They are both 7200rpm and SATA. The new drive boots up ok but only shows 128gb, not 154gb as it did before it was cloned (I am not talking about the size of the data that was cloned). I redid it in Manual mode but no change. As far as I know there are no partitions on the Seagate drive. Another thing I noticed is that the System Files were at the front of the Seagate 120gb drive but are at the end on the WD 160gb. This shows when the drives are Defraged. Can anybody sort this out for me? I am doing this so that I have a backup drive incase of a terminal crash. Forgot, I am using a Intel 915gag w/P4@3.2 and W2000Pro with all updates.
Reformatted my hard drive, Drive C and reinstalled Windows XP Professional SP3 and all the drivers. The drive is 120 GB. I have a Dell 8300, now all of a sudden when I click on Drive C it shows that I only have 24% unused space on my hard drive. It has been defragged and I know it shouldn't be showing that full.
I was downloading some file, and while I was downloading, it said I've got a very low amount of free disk space, which was then about ~50MB, and going down (drive C: ). I tried deleting some files (in total about 400MB), but it showed the same amount of free space, and kept going down. Ultimately, my download stopped because of this, and the free space is gone.I don't have System Restore enabled, it's disabled, on all drives (C: & D: ), and I don't think I have some kind of an automated backup program. Plus, my two drives are formatted in NTFS, not FAT. if that helps. I haven't tried to reset yet, but besides reset, is there anything else I should try?
I have a sata 500 GB hard drive from Seagate that just won't get recognized. I've been in Disk Management, I've scanned the disk, I've rebooted, and Disk 1 is there, but the message is it's offline--and after I did the reboot I got the message that the hard drive USB had been recognized--but it ain't there.
I have a sony CRX220E1 CD-RW installed. It has worked well, but now "My Computer" shows it only as a CD, but Device manager shows it as a CD-RW and says it is working normally. User software does not now recognize it as a CD-RW.
Under device manager/system in windows xp sp2 should it say that no drivers are installed? also shows these devices:direct meory access controller motherboard resources numeric data processor NVIDIA nforce PCI System Management seems like there should be some type of driver installed, I am just trying to figure out why I cant get internet explorer tools>options bar to work.
I was wondering how to fix this problem, the icon for internet explorer in the start menu shows up as an unknown file icon. The icon on the desktop for IE shows fine but when i try to click on it, it creates a shortcut for internet explorer. if click on IE from the start menu, it opens IE with no problems.
Each time log in. When i log in,it shows unable to find SVCHOST.exe.Please check the path of the file. Previously,i ended the svchost.exe process suspecting it for virus. From then on am having this problem. In Start menu i have lost some utilities like paint, calculator.
This error comes up no matter how I try to boot my Computer.Disable or uninstall any anti viruse, disk defragmanation or backup utilities... Then it goes on like that, and the technical information: STOP: 0x00000024 (0x001902FE 0xF7CDE6DC 0xF7CDE3D8 0xF731BF81) It started happening after I ran the new AVG Free 8.0 virus scanner. So maybe that's the problem? So far I haven't been able to even run in safe mode to disable it.
For some reason, 1 of my DVD's has become, erm.. strange. There are files on it, but Windows (XPHome SPII, automatic updates) states it's empty. All the other DVD's work fine. This was one of the first DVD's I burned on this machine, round about the time SPII came out.
I am trying to install Windows XP Home for a friend. I set the BIOS up to boot from CD and inserted the Windows XP install CD. When the PC boots up I get the following error message: Cannot boot from CD - Code: 5. The CD ROM spins up and sounds like its working fine. It was working fine before I tried to install.
Ok, heres the problem. We are building some PC's at work and one of them was supposed to be for a spicific department within. well, last minute they decided to give it to another dept. Well we changed the account name to that dept from the other. The problem is when we boot up the PC it still has the old dept.'s name on it, when we login, it labled as the new dept. we searched windows files as well as Registry and cant find the old dept.'s name anywhere. where is this name being pooled from?
The other day I tried to open yahoo messenger but it wouldn't open. So I restarted my comuter. As it was shutting off, a box popped up real fast right before it shut off. There was no way I coulda read what it said, it shut off too fast........When my computer came back on, a box popped up that said 'this computer does not have an internet connection' or something and had options to install it. So I ignored it and tested my internet connection and it still worked.Next, I realized that my sygate firewall and norton antivirus weren't in the system tray Then I got a box pop up that said my HP office jet printer encountered a problem and had to be shut down or something. My printer wasn't even on.
Getting the blue screen on an XP machine after each solution i have tried. I have replace the ram, cleared the page file, ran chkdsk, and I was doing a repair install and I got the blue screen again. What else could it be. I used a hard drive utility and the hard drive is fine. all 4 sticks of memory can't be bad. I tried them one at a time. I need some help and thoughts.
