Just been trying to fix granddaughter Computer (had 47 Trojans!!!) one could not be removed until reboot (used Spy-Bot) rebooted and now there are no icons on the desktop, but can get programs to run by using task manager . I believe there is a way of reinstalling Win XP without losing existing programs ans data.

He was cleaning his keyboard off and he must have hit some kind of key combination, because all his desktop icons disappeared except for the My Computer and Recycle Bin ones. I guess he had a bunch on there that he needed, but couldn't find them. They weren't in the Recycle Bin and a file search didn't turn any of them up.

I tried changing back, uninstalling styleXP, doing a system restore, running a registry cleaner, and rebuilding the icons using TweakUI but nothing works.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSome 20 shortcut icons on my screen and the last time I booted up they had all disappeared. Going through IE/Desktop they are all there. I have tried dragging them from the desktop window to the desktop screen but that is not possible as the destination is the same. I have tried right clicking the desktop screen and creating a new shortcut the new shortcut is created but only in the desktop window and not on the screen. It slows things down when there is no icon to bring up the Internet and other favourite programmes and there is no Recycle Bin.

Also, when I check the box for having an icon in the taskbar for Windows features like the speaker (volume control icon), it is ignored by windows. I am not a newbie, I know about hiding inactive icons, etc... I do not have hiding icons selected at all. I have checked and unchecked, started and restared the computer and the apps to try to trick windows into showing the icons, all to no avail. This happened when I removed a couple of Security applications: Comodo Firewall and Spyware Terminator. Both had HIPS enabled. The icons were there before I removed these apps, now they are not. I have subsequently reinstalled new versions of theset two apps.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI went to log in the other day, using normal login and password.upon completing log-in process, I noticed my desktop looked completely different than normal (we normally stash dozens of icons right on desktop for quick access) - there were no icons there except for a couple standard shortcuts..Fearing all was lost, I quickly checked hard drive and saw that all our files were still there and functional (even in the desktop folder), but for some reason the desktop was not loading.Tried to open Outlook Express to check mail and could not access mail files or the internet It seems even though I used my normal login info, I was logged in as a different user and I suspect that's why desktop wasn't loading and I couldn't access email....I checked Documents and Settings - there is a new user folder (appeared out of nowhere as far as I can tell) with syntax of mynormalusername.L600-myfirstname.

I believe this happened after the Microsoft updates early November but that may be just a coincidence. The programs are still running when I check in services and I am just wondering why this is happening. The icons that disappeared are Webroot's Spyweeper and Pure Network's, Network Magic, my network manager program. My system specs are P4 2.8mhz 1024mb ram 160gb hdd running Windows XP Home.
View 8 Replies View RelatedIn the Explorer folders in my Windows XP Pro, suddenly, I no longer have the icons I normally use--such as X for delete, and the cut, copy, and paste icons, which are mainstays of my work in the Explorer panels.
When I right click in the upper panel of the folder and open the customize panel, I put the icons I need at the top of the folder. Yes, I know that the panel on the left in the folders has many of the functions that the icons serve, such as delete, rename, etc. BUT... after I put all the icons I need at the top, as soon as I close and reopen the folder, the icons have disappeared!!What is going on? How come? Home come I can't set the icons I need for all Explorer folders at one time??I'm hoping someone can help me fix this!

View 12 Replies View Relatedrecently I loaded up my computer, logged inunder my user profile (I'm running Windows XP SP2), Everything looked normal until the system completed loading and my wallpaper icons vanished (Wallpaper stays), My start button & Task manager bar vanished as well(including the clock).I logged out of my profile, and was able to use the profile I had set up for my mom for about a day... but then her profile did the same thing. I tried my daughter's profile and everything is gone.When I looked in my listing of what applications are running, I've noticed that my explorer.exe is gone.
This is frustrating. The last time I shut the computer down everything was fine. Today my wife used it for Market Day and LTD then went offline and put it to sleep.When I woke it up, the 1st thing I noticed was that the desktop Tetris icon was black. The shape was there but it was black. I tried to change the icon in the shortcut properties and saw the correct icon there but it kept turning black when I applied it. Then I went to My Computer. All my desktop icons will disappear along with my task bar for a few seconds then reappear. then nothing will happen as if i never clicked it in the first place. View 12 Replies View RelatedI live 4 states away from my little brother, and his computer is in dire straights. When we boot it up, he gets a blank desktop, no icons, no taskbar, no start menu. If we attempt to access programs via task manager (ctrl alt del) then we get the "Task manager has been disabled by the administrator. I need to know where to start so we can begin taking care of this mess. We can get into safe mode, and task manager will let us in, but I'm lost after that step. I've had him run a couple of cracks that are supposed to fix the registry, but they dont help when we reboot into normal windows. Someone lend me a hand and let me know what we need to do.

I have tried to right click and click 'show desktop', but all I am able to do is move the mouse. There is no other mouse function present. I am able to access the internet, email and run applications via the Ctrl, Alt, Del command and then selecting 'run'. All that is displayed is my background screen saver and the mouse pointer. Please advise me on how normal functionality can be restored. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI started my computer today and all of the icons pointing to Microsoft Office files, Adobe Acrobat files, and similar files have been replaced by generic windows icons (white icon with little window in the middle) they are no longer program specific icons.Yes, I have tried TweakUI to rebuild the icons and it did nothing, I have tried increasing then decreasing the size of the icons to attempt to force windows to replace them with the correct icons and that has not worked either. I have also tried to use system restore and that did not help either.This is really making me angry and I don't understand why it happened I have searched everywhere for a solution and found nothing.
