Icon / Buttons / Drop Down Text Disappeared
May 3, 2007One of my users reported that their icon text had disappeared. I went to check things out and it looks like all text in Windows had disappeared as well! Buttons, icons, drop down menus, etc.User said they hadn't gone anything recently and that the PC was just like this after being off for five days (yeah right ).

Problem= The text under my desktop icons are a bit difficult for me to read, and i use a clear wallpaper.I would like to change the text color to black.I did try and try again, ended up a disaster, had to reinstall an older backup.Windows XP SP2.

May 8, 2005Is there any way to turn off the help text that appears when you float the mouse pointer over the permanent icons you put either in the Systray or on the other end of the taskbar? To me, they're annoying/get in the way.

Jan 7, 2008I was running a program called "Virtual DJ", and it's a dj program, that turns the resolution to full screen, but while the app was in the process of going to full screen, my pc froze due to a lot of programs I had running, so now, the resolution on my computer is not how it normal should be, meaning, its not crisp like it was before, I mean at a first glance, most wouldnt notice anything, but if you look close, you can tell the text and icons are slighty stretched and blurry, so im going to post a screenshot of this page,so comapare this picture with yours,and look closly.I tried a system restore, but that dosnt even work(different issue)I think ti has to be a problem with the video card? Is there a way i could completly restor all display settings to factory...

Aug 6, 2009when I am using my computer, some of the buttons don't appear. The names of icons aren't there. One day my wife was working on a word document, and some of the text disappeared. When she scrolled down, then back up, some of it was back. The text was there, we just couldn't see it because of the display being weird. Dual core 3.4ghz Dell, 2gb RAM. Fairly new machine, XP pro.

Mar 25, 2010This happened to one of my co-workers yesterday. He was cleaning his keyboard off and he must have hit some kind of key combination, because all his desktop icons disappeared except for the My Computer and Recycle Bin ones. I guess he had a bunch on there that he needed, but couldn't find them. They weren't in the Recycle Bin and a file search didn't turn any of them up.

Jan 23, 2009Some 20 shortcut icons on my screen and the last time I booted up they had all disappeared. Going through IE/Desktop they are all there. I have tried dragging them from the desktop window to the desktop screen but that is not possible as the destination is the same. I have tried right clicking the desktop screen and creating a new shortcut the new shortcut is created but only in the desktop window and not on the screen. It slows things down when there is no icon to bring up the Internet and other favourite programmes and there is no Recycle Bin.

Oct 26, 2008whenever I run a fullscreen program for example a game, or go into standby mode and then resume to my desktop the icons, the windows and text etc are all quite blurred and not so crisp anymore. I had recently bought my laptop which is a Compaq Presario C793VU Notebook PC and it had Vista on it but I don't really like Vista so I downgraded to XP and installed most of the drivers that I could find. I would take screenshots of before standby/fullscreen and after except when I did both the images looked the same. After I restart/turn off my computer the display is fine until I stanby or play a game.

Feb 12, 2007Win XP Home SP2. I have applications that should and did have icons in the taskbar. They are no longer there. Also, when I check the box for having an icon in the taskbar for Windows features like the speaker (volume control icon), it is ignored by windows. I am not a newbie, I know about hiding inactive icons, etc... I do not have hiding icons selected at all. I have checked and unchecked, started and restared the computer and the apps to try to trick windows into showing the icons, all to no avail. This happened when I removed a couple of Security applications: Comodo Firewall and Spyware Terminator. Both had HIPS enabled. The icons were there before I removed these apps, now they are not. I have subsequently reinstalled new versions of theset two apps.

May 29, 2007I went to log in the other day, using normal login and password.upon completing log-in process, I noticed my desktop looked completely different than normal (we normally stash dozens of icons right on desktop for quick access) - there were no icons there except for a couple standard shortcuts..Fearing all was lost, I quickly checked hard drive and saw that all our files were still there and functional (even in the desktop folder), but for some reason the desktop was not loading.Tried to open Outlook Express to check mail and could not access mail files or the internet It seems even though I used my normal login info, I was logged in as a different user and I suspect that's why desktop wasn't loading and I couldn't access email....I checked Documents and Settings - there is a new user folder (appeared out of nowhere as far as I can tell) with syntax of mynormalusername.L600-myfirstname.

Nov 25, 2006Two icons have disappeared but occasionally reappear for one or two secessions. I believe this happened after the Microsoft updates early November but that may be just a coincidence. The programs are still running when I check in services and I am just wondering why this is happening. The icons that disappeared are Webroot's Spyweeper and Pure Network's, Network Magic, my network manager program. My system specs are P4 2.8mhz 1024mb ram 160gb hdd running Windows XP Home.

Apr 4, 2006In the Explorer folders in my Windows XP Pro, suddenly, I no longer have the icons I normally use--such as X for delete, and the cut, copy, and paste icons, which are mainstays of my work in the Explorer panels.
When I right click in the upper panel of the folder and open the customize panel, I put the icons I need at the top of the folder. Yes, I know that the panel on the left in the folders has many of the functions that the icons serve, such as delete, rename, etc. BUT... after I put all the icons I need at the top, as soon as I close and reopen the folder, the icons have disappeared!!What is going on? How come? Home come I can't set the icons I need for all Explorer folders at one time??I'm hoping someone can help me fix this!

Apr 11, 2006This is frustrating. The last time I shut the computer down everything was fine. Today my wife used it for Market Day and LTD then went offline and put it to sleep.When I woke it up, the 1st thing I noticed was that the desktop Tetris icon was black. The shape was there but it was black. I tried to change the icon in the shortcut properties and saw the correct icon there but it kept turning black when I applied it. Then I went to My Computer. Wow. Most of the icons were gone and replaced by that MS arrow icon. There was even a folder that wouldn't come up or show anything.Well, lets see. My system is 1 year old and is a generic one. Intel MOBO (915 I think), P4@3.2, 1gRam, SATA HD 15% used, Windows 2000Pro W/SP4.
