Win 2000 / Drives A And D Have Disappeared
Feb 19, 2006Win 2000. Drives "A" and "D" have disappeared. Can I fix it without editing the registry?

Mar 4, 2005All of a sudden my CD drive and my new DVD burner are gone. They are still there but it is as if they were unplugged from my PC but they were not unplugged. I did some Windows Updates recently. Tried System Restore and it did not work. When I go into "My Computer" the 2 drives are just gone.

Feb 9, 2005I am experiencing this problem with my CD-R/W driver. I have windows XP and 2000 both installed on my system. The CD Drive is visible from windows 2000, but when i go to windows XP, i dont see the CD Drive there in My Computer. It used to be there earlier, but then it disappeared. Normally when some bad CD is inserted, it disappears ,but it appears again on restart. Now its not appearing altogether !!! I know that its driver is the cause. Will I need to download a driver for it ? What might be the reason? Howcome it is functioning okay in Windows 2000?

May 15, 2005I looked through the add and remove program box ,and i found this one program AdWARE & SPYware. How would i be able to get rid of this program ?. I've already downloaded an Anti-virus protector called Kaspersky Anti-virus Personal pro 5.0. I've already scanned my computer and it found 2 viruses. I don't know if this program i am using to scan my computer for viruses works or not. I've never heard of the program, but it's been recommended by many.

Apr 11, 2006This is frustrating. The last time I shut the computer down everything was fine. Today my wife used it for Market Day and LTD then went offline and put it to sleep.When I woke it up, the 1st thing I noticed was that the desktop Tetris icon was black. The shape was there but it was black. I tried to change the icon in the shortcut properties and saw the correct icon there but it kept turning black when I applied it. Then I went to My Computer. Wow. Most of the icons were gone and replaced by that MS arrow icon. There was even a folder that wouldn't come up or show anything.Well, lets see. My system is 1 year old and is a generic one. Intel MOBO (915 I think), P4@3.2, 1gRam, SATA HD 15% used, Windows 2000Pro W/SP4.

Aug 10, 2007My daughter was running Win98, and had been saving to desktop folders (she thought). I know this isn't wise, didn't realise she didn't know that.Recently computer was acting strange and a "professional" was called in who copied everything on her hard drive to an external drive, cleaned it out and installed 2000. Then copied her stuff back to her drive. Now the numerous folders on her desktop have either disappeared or if opened show only gobbledegook.

Jul 30, 2005I have gont ot XP fro 2000 and had my 2 Maxtor slave drives on a SI l680 ATA 133 controler card. I was unable to get XP to load with the card so I removed it and after replacing it the drives do not show up. They are in the Bios and the driver for the card is in and working corectly. I took one off and made it a secondary on the to the boot and they still are gone.

Apr 20, 2006I have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers.It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".

Dec 27, 2007I recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem.
- I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery.
- I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install.
- I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help.
- I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters.
- i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios.
I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.
System Not Seeing Removable Drives - Get Dvd Drives Back
Jun 26, 2010My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. Aug 17, 2007Am I right in thinking that they are both pretty similar except that server has support for multiple processors and extra network related tools and facilities. The reason I ask is that if a piece of software works on Windows 2000 server, is it extremely likely that it will work on Windows 2000 professional too? As a bit of background information: I work for a small company which supplies temperature monitoring equipment which needs to be networked. I've been told that it has been tested on Windows 2000 server but not on Window 2000 professional.

I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.

Jun 6, 2005I work for a fire department and they have Desktop Authority map certain network drives when they login. For some reason, DTA will map the drives when they login, and everything works fine, but after an hour or two, they lose connectivity to that drive and are no longer able to access it. I know this is very vague, but has anyone had this problem?BTW, I just recently upgraded from NT 4.0 to Server 2003 Standard, and we've had tons of other little problems with permissions and the like. Is this the cause of the dissapearing drives?

Jul 16, 2005I have just upgraded my M/b, CPU & RAM. Went through the (painful) procedure of re-activation (how many digits ). Had to do a repair install to get XP to boot. While booting I noticed that the 'chasing lights' on the Windows flash screen had reverted back to green instead of blue, which indicates that I no longer have SP2 installed. Visited MS Update. Was told SP2 was already installed. However, I have no icon for Security Centre either.

Sound Has Disappeared

Sep 28, 2008I was using the internet when suddenly the window closed and everything disappeared from my desktop (task bar, start button, desktop icons..everything leaving just the background). Didn't get any error messages or warnings either. I tried clicking on the desktop but got no response so I pressed ctrl, alt, delete, to restart. But when it restarted I got an empty desktop again and it wasn't until the 4th time restarting when everything was there again. I then opened internet explorer and it wouldn't respond. On the fifth time restarting, everything was fine but half an hour later I got the empty desktop again and had to restart 5 times again. Is this a virus? How to I get rid of this problem since it was running fine before this.

I can get to it from a straight explorer, but it's gone from my Start Menu and any program now that opens a "Select Folder" type dialog opens My Network Places and My Computer cannot be accessed.Note I keep it off my desktop, but even if I try to re-enable it on the desktop (Display-->Desktop-->Customize Desktop, Select it, OK), it doesn't work.
