I have a BenQ DVD Writer as Master and the Dell CD/DVD ROM drive as slave.Both work, both show up in Device Manager, but the CD/DVD ROM does not show in MY COMPUTER, even though it works fine!
View 4 RepliesI added another 150G hard drive last year to my computer...it worked just fine for almost a year and then when I was defragmenting I got a message saying a file was corrupted and since then that drive has vanished from my computer It was labeled G and I had it almost filled and now no matter what I try computer doesn't acknowledge the drive anywhere I look...if I run the defragment program it doesn't even show the G drive and in Windows Explorer nothing shows for that drive either

Win 2000 Pro, I go to the My Computer Icon...and it is gone? Anyone know where it might be hiding?
I am running Windows 2000 pro on an old Compaq. Norton was up-to-date just before problem started: Before Xmas a windows auto update came through. I shut down before it had completed. When I turned on next morning, a sort of error message came up - "would I like to log on in any case", sort of thing - and I stupidly pressed OK. Next thing, everything on the D drive was fine, but on the C drive all my files had disappeared. Icons up as uusal, but most of them did nothing when you pressed them. I can access the internet, but no way can I get into Outlook Express. Event log only shows one error which is OMCI failed to load.
Spoke to Norton to try a remote scan, but the PC would not let me lower the security settings to allow this - just kept bouncing back to medium security level. Gave the PC to a local "Specialist" who acheived zero. Im sending this on my old PC. I really do need my old files back if possible., rather than just buying a new PC! Ideas please (tailored for a compete non-techie)!! It occured that I could create a system restore point (perhaps on an external hard drive) and then start playing in the registry, but am a complete PC moron so am rather (very, actually) nervous about that.
I am experiencing this problem with my CD-R/W driver. I have windows XP and 2000 both installed on my system. The CD Drive is visible from windows 2000, but when i go to windows XP, i dont see the CD Drive there in My Computer. It used to be there earlier, but then it disappeared. Normally when some bad CD is inserted, it disappears ,but it appears again on restart. Now its not appearing altogether !!! I know that its driver is the cause. Will I need to download a driver for it ? What might be the reason? Howcome it is functioning okay in Windows 2000?

I've already downloaded an Anti-virus protector called Kaspersky Anti-virus Personal pro 5.0. I've already scanned my computer and it found 2 viruses. I don't know if this program i am using to scan my computer for viruses works or not. I've never heard of the program, but it's been recommended by many.

It had only one NTFS partition covering all 300GB, but now its one FAT partition a little under 2GB plus tons of unallocated space. I have no clue how this happened, but would like to get back as much data as I can. Whenever I run an undelete program, it looks at the partition, not the drive, so it only sees 2GB of nothing and can't see any files.

I can get to it from a straight explorer, but it's gone from my Start Menu and any program now that opens a "Select Folder" type dialog opens My Network Places and My Computer cannot be accessed.Note I keep it off my desktop, but even if I try to re-enable it on the desktop (Display-->Desktop-->Customize Desktop, Select it, OK), it doesn't work. I clicked on Windows Explorer; 2. the little flashlight popped up and said it was searching; 3. the flashlight went away and a new window opened which was titled "Remote Assistance; 4. now the Windows Explorer Icon is gone, as is the Windows Exporer program itself, and the Remote Assistance Icon is on my Start button list instead. I have looked everywhere for the program and it cannot be found.I ran a full scan and there were no problems found. I have also run sfc /scannow to no avail.

View 15 Replies View RelatedI have lost my documents and settings somewhere.I click on my computer, local disk c:, then the document and setting folder. All that's in there is the all user folder. When I right click on the d&s folder, it says there is 8.64GB, which is about right. When I click on the all user folder, it's only 60.0MB.So I am assuming its somewhere, I just don't know how to get it back.Also, my favorites in Explorer disappeared, too. When I try to go back and add some that I already had, I get the message that it already exists.Could the folder somehow got hidden?

Today my wife used it for Market Day and LTD then went offline and put it to sleep.When I woke it up, the 1st thing I noticed was that the desktop Tetris icon was black. The shape was there but it was black. I tried to change the icon in the shortcut properties and saw the correct icon there but it kept turning black when I applied it. Then I went to My Computer. Wow. Most of the icons were gone and replaced by that MS arrow icon. There was even a folder that wouldn't come up or show anything.Well, lets see. My system is 1 year old and is a generic one. Intel MOBO (915 I think), P4@3.2, 1gRam, SATA HD 15% used, Windows 2000Pro W/SP4.

All my desktop icons will disappear along with my task bar for a few seconds then reappear. then nothing will happen as if i never clicked it in the first place. I've tried accessing it through the start menu but to no avail. the rest of my desktop icons work but for some reason i cant get into My Computer. Is this a virus perhaps?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI had a problem with my windows. When ever I plug in my Flash drive (i got a few: kingston data traveller 1gig, pendrive 128mb,etc) onto my usb port. Window will be able to detect the drive had been plug in. I can see the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the right side of my task bar. But i cannot see the drive appearing in "My Computer". If I double click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon and try to view the external drive information, I can see that its already detected and being assign with drive E: . Even if I open a windows explorer and type in E: , it will throw me an error "Cannot find 'file:///E:/'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct". But if I were to restart my computer, then i can see it for the first time. If I disconnect it (thru the "Safely Remove Hardware") and plug it back in (or plug another flash drive), I cant see the external drive. Causing I had to restart my computer multiple time a day.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just upgraded my M/b, CPU & RAM. Went through the (painful) procedure of re-activation (how many digits ). Had to do a repair install to get XP to boot. While booting I noticed that the 'chasing lights' on the Windows flash screen had reverted back to green instead of blue, which indicates that I no longer have SP2 installed. Visited MS Update. Was told SP2 was already installed. However, I have no icon for Security Centre either.

Didn't get any error messages or warnings either. I tried clicking on the desktop but got no response so I pressed ctrl, alt, delete, to restart. But when it restarted I got an empty desktop again and it wasn't until the 4th time restarting when everything was there again. I then opened internet explorer and it wouldn't respond. On the fifth time restarting, everything was fine but half an hour later I got the empty desktop again and had to restart 5 times again. Is this a virus? How to I get rid of this problem since it was running fine before this.
