I have had my Toshiba for 2 years and after reading a number of horror stories I decided to backup my information only to find that there is no "backup icon" in "system tools" and the microsoft website states that I should install it from my Windows cd rom! Unfortunately Circuit City didn't give me one when I bought my laptop.I have searched my programmes and have found that if I upgrade my Sonic Record Now I can get a backup function. I object to paying for something that I should have got as part of my purchase. My information consists mainly of photos, music and word documents.
I have a Compaq presario v2658au laptop. I wish to upgrade to a new larger HDD.I have lost the single copy of the xp operating system that the laptop allows me to make from the backup partition.I have tried to copy both the active partition and the backup partition using Norton Ghost. Both times it did not allow this. How can i copy either of these partitions or get the laptop allow me to make a fresh copy of xp.
I have been looking on Ebay at used/refurbished computers for upgrading from my current and older P4 chip computer. One that I'm looking at says that it has a (legal and genuine version) of Windows XP Pro SP3 o/s installed on the custom built computer, but there's no disk. If I were to purchase a computer like this, and make a back up copy of that installed o/s on my own disk, will there be any difference than if I had received the original installation disk or manufacturer's restore disk?.....or would the installed (and backup) o/s be considered an "unlicensed" copy?
After restoring a computer and backing up files, once the computer is back up and running should I have a foldercalled "My Backup 1408-08 2353" or should I have a single backup file called backup.bkf? I'm trying to help someone, and they have a folder with the files already available instead of a single backup.bkf file. He wants to restore everything to the original location before the computer restore. How can he do that with the folder he has instead of a backup.bkf file? The restore wizard is asking for a .bkf file to place everything in the original locations, and he doesn't have that.
I want to backup my PC for disaster recovery and then do an incremental backup each night to a USB hard drive. I tried Retrospect which came with the USB hard drive. I couldn't get it to work to well. I've been using the MS backup utility. With this software it seems any new email causes changes my large Outlook PST file and the whole file is backed up again. I've been trying to find backup software which will backup just the changed elements of the pst file and have tried downloading a trial version of continuity@work from Mobiliti who claim to be able to just backup the changes to a PST file. I left continuity@work running overnight and had to stop it as it was only 50% through the backup this morning. It calls it synchronization rather than backup and from the error messages it seems that it doesn't create a shadow image before backing up as several files were not backed up as they were in use.
I have two IDE hard disks one 40GB=C and the secondary 200GB=D,I have made a copy of documents and setting from C to a new folder backup in drive D.After that this operating finished I preformed format of C and installed from on drive C the MS WIN XP operating system. After the installation the backup FOLDER on drive D, changed to backup FILE without extension. How can I restore my DATA? anyone familiar with this phenomenon
basically what im looking to do is delete some old entries that the XP backup utility has created over time that i setup a while ago. Im using the "copy" option.so nothing has been appended or incremental.Im just looking to avoid deleting the setup i got, and maybe just delete a few "copy" backups so that theres not 8 gigs / 1 years worth of backups.i only need about 4 months I forgot about it.cuz i never neaded it. But it looks as if its the only way b/c i cant just delete selected backups.all or nothing?/ anyone know of a better backup utility that is simple and easy on a system BTW?
When scheduling a backup using the Windows Backup Wizard, I put in all the scheduling info, but Windows backup never launches. When I look at a scheduled event and click "properties" I get an error message that says "General page initialization failed, etc, etc. (error# 0X80090016)
I'm using XP Home and have been backing up My Documents regularly to an external hard drive with the back up utility in XP. The last time I tried to do a backup, I got an error message, "You have either run out of space or the backup (.bkf) is too large for this disk. Note: if this disk is formatted with Fat 32 , the maximum possible size for the is 4GB." My external disk is 75GB with 45GB free. It is formatted in NTFS. I did a clean up and defragged the disk and get the same error when I try to backup. Is this an indication of a problem with the external hard disk or a problem with the XP backup utility
I've installed the new drive, formatted it two partitions, and installed my XP on the new drive. The old drive is still installed, and I can select which drive I am booting off of. Boot off the old drive, I'm on my old PC. Boot off the new one, I'm on the new.Only one of the XPs are active at a time. The other says it must be activated. So, at this point, I boot to the old, and (with this OS activated)run the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. I specify that I am saving the data on one of the drives in the PC. It runs and says it's successful. Then I boot off the new drive and (now with THIS OS activated) when I point the FAST to the directory where I saved the files, the wizard says there's no files there to load. I can see .dat files in the directory, but the wizard can't.
When I try to backup by Windows Xp, Documents, files, etc., I get the message invalid drive (I'm burning the backup on a CD/RW-and it shows D drive for CD). then it says, name invalid when I type in name of file backup. When I want to backup files, on the backup screen to select what I want, documents are listed but no files!
I have just done a fresh install of XP Home on one of my computers and had quite a bit of trouble getting some drivers. Prior to doing anything else with that computer I would like to do a backup ( preferably complete ) on to a DVD(s) that will simplify an instillation if I ever end up having to reformat. If something happens down the road I would just like to install XP and then use my backup to restore it to what I have today. Any suggestions on how I should go about it and what software, free would be nice, that will allow me to do this? I hope I made myself clear as to my intentions.
On Drive C Used Space 11.2GB Free Space 137GB (NTFS)I am expecting this drive to fill up over the next 18 months. Drive D Not used at present condition raw 40GB (I got that from the properties tab - after I had tried to get Windows to format it). How do I change it from raw state to something that can be used? I also have Seagate Free Agent 250GB external backup - Not Used at present. I have some software called Spotmau Power Suite 2008 but I am not really sure how to put this whole thing together. At the moment when I start the computer (Drive C) it runs CHKDisk on drive D every time. 1)What Im really trying to do is format Drive D. I tried to do that with Windows but it didn't work. I dint know how to do this so any advice would be helpful. 2)I would like to use the rest of the capacity for backup that is Drive D and the Seagate external drive, but Im not sure how to go about it. Can someone help please? 3)Am I right in thinking it would be better to use just the one operating system Windows XP on drive C and not put it on drive D as well?

I am running win XP Pro, P-III-500, 256 Ram, 93GHD's, 56k dial up. I do backups fairly frequently but my question is, what is crucial for backup and what would be considered overkill?

I have a gateway T3302 and have used the restore cd to do a full system restopre with backup. A gateway tech told me after the restoration, which was necessary because i was missing a couple .dll wildows files, I would be able to access and restore all files previous to the restore. I now see the "My Backup" folder on my desktop. However, when I click on it, then on the documents & settings file, the user accounts I previously used are not there. How do I get my old files back.
A friend told me that I cannot backup and restore the entire XP using programs such as Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image. He said that I can only restore the data and applications installed previously but not the OS for that I've to use the traditional format reinstall from XP disk method. Plz help coz I want to reduce my restoration time to as little as possible.
I run a normal backup of all file each week to a external hard drive. The hard drive of the data I backup crashed and a new hard drive was installed.During the restore of the files to the new drive, however, the regularly scheduled backup began overtop of the restore process, and before the restore could complete overwrote the backup I was restoring with no files at all. Is there a temporary place that Windows XP backup utility may have saved the previous backup and is it normal (intended?) for these two operations to run simultaneously?
Recently, when I Backup C: the process completes about a third of the Backup and then Windows crashes with the much-loved Blue Screen. Restart occurs normally and chkdsk reports no problems. An investigation has shown that the problem occurs when the Backup reaches the Folder C:Documents and Settings Local Service Local Settings Temporary Internet Files Content.IE5. When the backup reaches this Folder, the backup continues normally for a few seconds and then Windows crashes. There are 4 sub-folders in ....Content.IE5 and the couple of usual files like index.dat. Looking through the files in the 4 sub-folders these seem to be "bits & pieces" of a web page relating to Belkin. I have a Belkin UPS installed and these "bits & pieces" are related to the Belkin Support Homepage. Nothing looks ominous. A couple of .css files, .gif files and some .txt. I have run AV & Spyware on the Folder and all is reported OK. The disk has a small bad sector on it that was reported and fixed (isolated) by chkdsk a long time ago. I have not experienced any other unusual behavior that would indicate that this bad sector is creating any kind of a problem.
Was playing with my folder.htt in C:winntweb and i meesed it up.Now my web view does not work.Using win2k Sp4 can someone upload a backup of the web folder from win2k? or give an alternate solution? Please dont send JS / activeX viruses :-)
so I have 1 60 GB HDD in my laptop. It is partitioned off so C: is 44 GB and F: is 16 GB. I have F: acting as a backup side for my documents. I am looking for software so that every time I create a new file on C:, it automatically creates a backup on F:. Or maybe just make it backup every day or so.
I use the Enhanced Windows Backup program. I have just copied backup files to a CD. The files have my docs on it, along with Local Settings, All Users, Start Menu, etc.Fortunately, I haven't had to restore any info due to computer crashes. I tried to check if the files got copied to the CD and all I can see is the name of the folder, but not the individual files. My concern is how do I know if the files are there and then, what would I have to do to get them transferred to my computer in case of a computer crash?
when i was scannin my computer i accidently deleteed winlogon. for my windows xp and now everytime i start the computer it says winlogo cannot be found where can i download it sincei dont have windows xp home cd rom and my morephues wont start now.
Before I put away the old computer running the same OS as the new computer, I backed up the hdd using Acronis and I also backed up to a USB external hdd "just in case". The USB external is a 40GB hdd and only one partition. My question is: can I also back up the hdd in my new computer to the same hdd without causing any problem if and when I have to use it to restore either? computer's hdd contents? (I have also backed up the new PC hdd with Acronis.) BTW, the external hdd is more than adequate to accommodate both PC back ups; even with dual booting XP Pro and Win98SE on the old PC.I understand that Acronis will not burn to a DVD disk but instead the burn has to be saved somewhere (desktop?) and then copied to a DVD disk. .
