Windows XP pro and now every 5mins or so the system will just lock up and I can not do anything. I dont have much running when it happened and its only started happening these last couple of days. Its not overheating either. Its strange thou, when the computer locks up it seems like it hasn't, like msn will keep poping up with people and winamp still plays music, I just can't do anything.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI know that this is a lot to ask in one thread but they all do relate (I think ) I spotted a program listed in program fills that I have never seen before: Authentium. It had a file listed in it as: AuthFw.exe. When I Googled that it led me to a link to Tech Support Guy were member LOgic posted the following post: "As of late My computer has begun to lock up for no apparent reason. What happens is the following. When i go to click on any program none of them respond. I cant alt ctrl delete cause that window doesnt come up. I then click on the start menu and all the icons for the window update and microsoft update and such are not there as if the it doesnt recognize what program to read them with. I then proceed to restart my computer And The old menu pops up. As in not the 3 big red buttons that confirm log out, turn off and restart but a grey box that gives me the same options plus asking me if i want it to hibernate or stand by. Then when the computer is turning of normally it gives a big blue screen saying " windows is shutting down" But what happened when this computer locks up is that a logo of home edition appears in a small grey box and tells me its shutting down. Is my computer going into some kind of safe mode on its own? Every time i leave the computer own on its own?If someone can please help me with this problem it would be great.
I was in shock because it repeated the problems that I have been having and after many attempts have failed to solve. Let me add that I have as LOgic started using a different sound card. actually I removed SoundBlaster and started using the onboard audio on the motherboard (ECS 848P-A) which has Realtek AC97 Audio. I have updated the drivers for this and searched everywhere I can think of to see if this is the problem. LOgic's problem was apparently solved when he went to windows update and updated a driver. My problem is that often when I go to windows update it will down load updates but fail to install them. When this happens as it did just tonight, it takes me days to get support from Microsoft to help me resolve this issue. I have reached a point that MS is a dirty word that I try not to say anymore.
xp pro sp2 automatic updates enabled. My computer restarts automatically after shut down. This happens sometimes immediately, sometimes after a delay of up to 10 minutes. I tried using third party shut down programs, but that did not help. However if I let the computer go into hibernate, it shuts down and does not restart. I do not have Roxio installed, and in the settings for startup and recovery the automatic restart is disabled.

and returned everything and including my old BIOS setting. PC bootup win-xp ok BUT it
will not run continuously because hard drive LED stop. All program just stop
functioning after few minute of running. Cold boot has no effect except to Reset and
always did checking files on all drives. I deleted one Trojan Horse virus on popup
warning BUT couldn't completely scan the whole hard drive because AV program stop also.
I also tried in Safe Mode to clean-up AV, Spyware & Malware BUT not successful because
it stop also.
I looked at past beeping problems on C-Net and also on Google but I can't find the situation I have. Once exactly at 3 minute intervals my computer gives a short (1 second) beep. Everything works fine so at first I ignored it but I know something is wrong and if possible I would like to fix it before I have a disaster. My Bios is Phoenix and when I checked beep codes there is nothing listed for 1 beep every 3 seconds. My HDD temp is 100 degrees F which is normal for my computer. I would appreciate it if anyone has any ideas which might explain and cure this beep. My profile lists computer info if needed.

Last weekend, my computer began acting very slow, etc. Not too long after, the computer began to reboot itself about every 20 minutes without warning. It would just suddenly reboot, as if I'd hit the reset button. This obviously made me suspect it was a virus infection, so I restarted in Safe Mode and ran AVG. It gave me results and I hit the "Heal" button, deleting the entries.I assumed this was the end of it, but as soon as I restarted, the 20 minute reboots began to occur again. For the past few days, I've been trying to find out exactly what is wrong, but have been unable to do so. When I restart in normal mode, a message appears that says "System Has Recovered from a Serious Error". I'm hoping that you'll be able to help me out because I REALLY need that computer right now.

It seems to do it either sporadically when im away from it or using it for long periods of time. I recently installed a brand new power supply Ultra 400 watts ATX power supply. One of the popups I get is: "SQLDUMPER library failed initialization. Your installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with. Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem." Well I have had a Windows Media Center PC since the start of last year. I had some problems with the hard drive having a bad sector so had it changed. Now, this has happened 3 times. The first time I just downloaded a game and started it, the computer stopped responding and well I couldn't do anything but to press the restart button.I did this and then started the computer again and it got to the WinXP loading screen then rebooted, this carried on happening no matter which config (safe mode, last knwon... etc) I picked.
PS I also heard there is a patch to solve this.. but couldn't find it..
Can someone give me some advice on how to remove the automatic restart on my XP SP3 based PC which is continuously rebooting without stopping at the error screen that indicates what the issue is?The error screen is only visible for a second before the reboot begins.Without Windows access to the startup options, is there a way to disable auto restart?

When I start my computer, it pops up with the standard menu it uses when an OS error has caused a restart. I can't get it too load windows using safe mode, last known good configuration, or normal mode. I never even see the windows loading screen, it restarts immediately.

It seemed, with my last computer, the updates created more problems than they were worth. Does anyone have an opinion on how important it is to get these updates or am I just as well off not receiving them? So I assumed it might be the power supply so I went and bought a new one from stamples. He turned on for maybe 5 seconds then turned off. so I took it back thinking maybe I didn't have enough watts. View 6 Replies View RelatedI work as a technician in a number of Primary Schools and I have been asked by some of the schools if there is a way to ensure that Number Lock is switched off on all machines before they log in. I have done a few searches on google but have no results that work.I have tried editing the registry however this only works AFTER they have logged in. Disabling Num Lock at boot in bios doesn't work as windows likes to override this setting.The reason i have been asked for this is that the schools have Laptops which the children use and when they are typing in their usernames they are obviously getting a mixture of numbers and letters in the username field.Does anyone have ANY ideas how i can disable the number lock at boot?
