I am a student technician at Central Michigan University, and I'm trying to develop a script to run via group policy or run as a service on our windows XP machines to shut them down at a specific time. My building has two labs of 40+ computers. These systems are on 24x7. I was wondering if there is any way to have these systems shutdown at a specific time?
How do I remove an automatic update that's been downloaded but not installed, and block it from being downloaded again in the future? I had installed SP3 for Internet Explorer 6, but it caused problems, interfered with my burners,so I restored to just prior to the installation. But now it's been downloaded again, and although I unchecked it under custom install, I now find it's trying to install it everytime I go to turn off or reboot.
ive recently encountered a problem with automatic update. it doesnt seem to want to turn on,nor can i get any updates through windows updates..when i try to start it through administrative services i get this error....(error 1058: the service cannot be started either because its disabled ,or because it has no enabled devices associated with it)..however,automatic updates is turned on to "automatic" and "background intelligence transfer" and "event log" are also on. it just doesnt seem to want to start.when i click on "windows update" to update my computer on the web it tells me that there was an error starting this service because one of these three services is not running, however they are all running. my clock will also not synchronize either,no matter how i try.i cannot find any other services that might effect automatic updates from running. i have windows xp sp3. this just started today.
I have three microsoft updates that will not install. I have tried repeatedly to install them, however it is unsuccessful everytime. For now, I have put automatic update service on manual start until I can get it fixed as the automatic update service was eating up processor resources.
I have windows XP professional and recieve automatic updates on my computer on a regular basis. Does service pack 3 automatically install? I receive a yellow shield on my task bar informing me that updates are ready to install, I click the update button and it tells me to install service pack 3. I try the install and when I get to the halfway point of Performing Inventory I receive an error message: Service pack 3 could not back up registry value....ABORT-RETRY-IGNORE. no matter what button I select the results are the same Failed to Install.
xp pro sp2 automatic updates enabled. My computer restarts automatically after shut down. This happens sometimes immediately, sometimes after a delay of up to 10 minutes. I tried using third party shut down programs, but that did not help. However if I let the computer go into hibernate, it shuts down and does not restart. I do not have Roxio installed, and in the settings for startup and recovery the automatic restart is disabled.
I have a PC running XP Pro which is a workstation in a 2003 Server domain. When logging in, either to the domain or to the local system, the system reboots after the password has been entered. I've tried restoring to an earlier point without any success. I can tell you that I am able to log in normally in safe mode. Has anyone ever experienced this behavior and what have you done to correct it?
Windows XP pro and now every 5mins or so the system will just lock up and I can not do anything. I dont have much running when it happened and its only started happening these last couple of days. Its not overheating either. Its strange thou, when the computer locks up it seems like it hasn't, like msn will keep poping up with people and winamp still plays music, I just can't do anything.
my computer is restarting everytime i get to the log in screen. i think it is because of spyware or possibly a virus. is there a way i can boot from a cd or something in order to fix the problem. i would like to save the documents on there. it restarts about 4 seconds after the log in screen. i am running XP.
I am looking for a HDD so that I can take the board from it and install it onto mine that has stopped working. The only problem is that I am having trouble locating this model.
I formatted and reinstalled Windows XP Home edition. What is the phone number to call so I can talk to a live person because I need a new activation number. When I call the 1-888 number( from the activation setup) I get a computer voice. I know I need a new activation number because I had to get a new one about a year ago. I own the OEM WinXP home cd. just can't find the number to call.
I've had this Compaq since 2004. I've added a gig of RAM, a 250gb SATA HDD, and a 6600GT card.Anyway, I want to do a clean install of XP, which I've never done. I've cleared a bunch of space on my 250gb HD and transfered all the files im going to keep from C: to the 250gb.So my question is what will happen to my 250gb drive? Do I have to disconnect it? Will XP recognize it after the clean install? What about the extra RAM and 6600gt?
it usually happens when im like working on it for about 2hrs or something. the pc would go dead, and reboot. or windows would hang, and from the hard disk led, i can see that it is all busy and unavailable. ta ta. its getting on my nerves. i just recovered my system from new.net, and now i have slower internet connection. no nothing wrong with the isp. i suspect there maybe reminents of the old virus still holding back windows. could my fears turn out to be true? i have had the liberty of posting my HJT log here, so do point out anything suspicious and also anything that could slow down the system..
Starts up in safe mode and says'windows did not shut down properly'no matter what he clicks on, it goes back into safe mode as if it is in a loophe says, then he is presented with the same message again.so,hes stuck in safe mode. i told him to press the windows logo and the letter u twice which i saw in tips n tricks but no joy there.
Compaq Presario 6470NX running Windows XP. Automatic updates are continually trying and failing to update my system. One of the popups I get is: "SQLDUMPER library failed initialization. Your installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with. Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem." I restored to an earlier date and that went away. But, I'm still not getting my updates done. Last Tuesdays are (KB928365, 928366, and 928367).
Bought pc it came with something called RAID TOOL i have no idea what this is but, if i was to reinstall windows would it be crucial that this was reinstalled with it? or could i just reinstall windows xp from the disc and not worry about it?
i just had to reinstall windows xp pro service 2 and i now have to go through the logon screen when before i never did. it just went straight to my windows screen. how do i enable auto logon?
Well I have had a Windows Media Center PC since the start of last year. I had some problems with the hard drive having a bad sector so had it changed. Now, this has happened 3 times. The first time I just downloaded a game and started it, the computer stopped responding and well I couldn't do anything but to press the restart button.I did this and then started the computer again and it got to the WinXP loading screen then rebooted, this carried on happening no matter which config (safe mode, last knwon... etc) I picked. PS I also heard there is a patch to solve this.. but couldn't find it..
Can someone give me some advice on how to remove the automatic restart on my XP SP3 based PC which is continuously rebooting without stopping at the error screen that indicates what the issue is?The error screen is only visible for a second before the reboot begins.Without Windows access to the startup options, is there a way to disable auto restart?
My Favourites now contain hundreds of entries because it is somehow automatically adding them without me specifically doing so. I presume there is a way of stopping this. Does anybody know how?
I have a program I would like to have start as a system service on my Windows Server 2003 I have the resource kit installed but no clear instructions on how to use them.
I have searched around a bit to see if others have ran into this problem, but I have had no luck so far. When I start my computer, it pops up with the standard menu it uses when an OS error has caused a restart. I can't get it too load windows using safe mode, last known good configuration, or normal mode. I never even see the windows loading screen, it restarts immediately.
Use the Custom scan at the Windows Update site to see if there are any new drivers for your hardware immediately after installing SP2. Mods. Can you make this one sticky? What do you think of the Processor & RAM requirements quoted? Unrealistic?
I'm not sure if I have trojans in my system or if the Service Pack 2 is responsible for a bunch of new "services" running in the background of my computer. I've tried searching the internet and have found conflicting reports, so I thought I'd come to the BEST tech source on the net! Now...I've scanned with HJT and I can't see anything suspicious but then again I'm NOT a techie. The services I found that are running on my computer are as follows: C:WINDOWSSystem3 2svchost.exe -k netsvcs (there are about 30 - 40 of these entries on my computer) C:WINDOWSSystem32svchost.exe DcomLaunch (there are 2 of these entries on my computer) C:WINDOWSSystem32svchost.exe -k NetworkService
