I've had this Compaq since 2004. I've added a gig of RAM, a 250gb SATA HDD, and a 6600GT card.Anyway, I want to do a clean install of XP, which I've never done. I've cleared a bunch of space on my 250gb HD and transfered all the files im going to keep from C: to the 250gb.So my question is what will happen to my 250gb drive? Do I have to disconnect it? Will XP recognize it after the clean install? What about the extra RAM and 6600gt?

I am only moderately technically savvy. I'm not afraid of technology, but my only experience is tinkering around with my own PC's over the years when issues have come up. I'm a big fan of trying to do things yourself before calling in the professionals. However because of this, I have been delegated to complete the task at hand. This is my nephew's computer that has been dropped off at my house to somehow get running again.
I have each a Compaq Presario M2000 laptop computer, running Windows XP, 40 GB hard drive, 256 Mg memory, DVD CDRW, they're very nice and for whatever reason his quit working. He said that one day he went to turn on the computer and it wouldn't fire up. I told him to come over to my house and I swapted my battery and still nothing. I then swapped power packs with no fix. I thought it might be a power supply problem or something like that but have not figured out how to open it up without breaking something.
My laptop, (compaq presario v3000), won't load xp, if i tap f8, sometimes it will go to the screen where you can pick safe mode but it won't let me go to safe mode. sometimes it will go to desktop but when i try to play a game it restarts & frezes up again. I also have tried system restore, it takes me as far as choose your restore point & then it does nothing, just frezes there. I also have a d drive so i can restore it to manufactuary, when I first purchased my laptop. i don't know how to do this either. I'd rather not loose everything if possible.
I have a Compaq Presario which will no longer boot up, it won't even get to the Login screen. I am trying to use a bootable CD to re-install Windows XP but it gives an error. Is there a certain type of bootable CDs for Compaq Presario. Error: DISK BOOT FAILURE. INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PREE ENTER
My company has 3 compaq presario s6500nx that came loaded with XP Home and all the compaq crapware. We are migrating the machines from home to 2000, because they are too cheap to upgrade to xp Pro. I am having a difficult time location 2k drivers for this machine. I go to HP/Compaq and the only drivers they have available are for XP, does anyone have any experience with a 2k migration on these machines?
My machine had a power loss during start up and i cant get it up and running again can someone please help i have many things on the system that i just am so desperate to keep.Current Situation.Power up moves in loops of on off after 30 seconds with the following on screen message,[B]We apologize for the inconvenience but windows did not start successfully A recent hardware or software change may have caused this.If the computer stopped responding , restarted unexpectidly or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders choose last known good config to revert to the most recent settings that worked. If the previous start up was interupted due to a fpower failure or due to a power failure or because the power or re-set button was pressed or if you arnt sure what caused the problem, choose start windows normally.
I have a Compaq Presage SR1800NX and it has a virus on it, I can't tell which one I did multiple boot only disk virus scanners, but I don't think they caught it. I can't boot to windows anymore and I don't have the recovery disks, I can't get into safemode, but I can get into the recovery console. What are my options?
I want to perform a Windows repair on a Compaq Presario desktop computer but the person doesn't have an OS CD. I think what Compaq does is put the setup files for windows on a seperate partition so you install it using their recovery console. However, if you do this then it reformats the hard drive no matter what. This is NOT what I want to do. So my question is, if I can get my hands on a Windows XP Home full install CD (The computer came with Home) and enter in the CD key that came on the side of the Compaq, will it work correctly?
I have a Compaq Presario s6500nx that we have put win2k and I have installed drivers that HP provided (after I had to beg and request the win2k drivers from them) I have installed them and the onboard NIC does not work, it stopped working a while back. I have disabled the onboard lan. I installed a US Robtics Model 7900 10/100 NIC and installed all the drivers. I am having a problem with the computer getting an IP address. the network is set up with a DHCP server and it works fine because I never have this problem with any other computer. When I run ipconfig /renew I get the following Error: Windows 2000 IP Configuration The folling error occurred when renewing adapter Local Area Connection:
After lots of installs, uninstalls, and other acquired crap after quite a few years of use, I'm planning on reformatting my computer (specs are in profile).I have a few simple questions which I hope you can answer. First, I have a single hard-drive that is split in two partitions: C: and D:. The D: has always been locked down as a "recovery" drive. Can I just reformat my computer from the D:?If not, a few years ago, I made a set of recovery disks using the recovery creator. I am unsure on this, but when I made the recovery disks, will it restore my computer to the point when I created them (hope not), or will it completely reformat everything (what I'm hoping for).I plan on doing a "destructive," clean install in order to completely reformat my computer to stock specifications.Lastly, can I upgrade straight from SP1 to SP3? Or do you recommend that I use something like Project Dakota (or RyanVM) to bring me up to spiff with SP2, then make the final jump to SP3?
The laptop made some subtle clicking noises and would eventually crash after being on for 30 mins+. I noticed that avast didn't load during start up and when I scheduled a boot time scan, it wouldn't run. I decided to re-install Windows (XP SP3). I deleted everything on the drive and did a quick format. About half way through the installation process, I received a black screen that there is a "hard error." I tried again and received a blue screen that says Setup can't format the partition and that the drive may be damaged.I suspect it's a dead hard drive that's causing the problems...I was just hoping someone could confirm this. My uncle wants to keep the laptop and is willing to buy a new hard drive.but will it work? Also, I was able to access the bios and do the HDD self test and it checked out ok, which I thought was weird. Do I need to do the longer version?
I just want to start over. I burned all my pics and saved what I needed. I would like to give this to my hubby for him to use for his digital camera. How do I make it back to orignal. I have the OS cd and the app recovery cd. When I try to reformat it asks for a earlier date of which I dont have!
I have just installed Windows XP and am trying to connect to a network via Ethernet on a Compaq Presario SR5130NX.I have green lights on the network cable and when I boot into Ubuntu (Linux), the network works fine. In Windows XP, when I go to Control Panel > Network Connections > Set up a home or small office network, I get a message: "The wizard cannot find your network hardware." Under Device Manager, there is nothing to do with network components, so I'm pretty sure that I need drivers.
I recently purchased a Compaq Presario notebook with 256 KB RAM and XP Home SP2 preinstalled. I upgraded to XP Pro and added another 256KB RAM.When I run setup, it recognizes the 515KB, but when I check windows, it only recocognized 384KB RAM
I'm in dire need of the Windows XP expertise out there.I'm working on a Compaq Presario 2100 for a friend that she wants me to sell for her. When I got the laptop, it had XP Home Edition SP1 with no current anti-virus or anti-spyware software installed. She told me the machine wasn't working right and I'm sure you all can guess why.I believe I've removed all the viruses (1500 or so infected files) and spyware (about the same number of objects found as viral infected files, across Ad-Aware 1.06, SpyBot S&D 1.4, X-Cleaner (Free), and Spy Sweeper 3.5 trial) and the machine seems to be running fine. I've got SP2 installed and have all of the Windows updates installed. One thing I have NEVER been able to do is open the User Account Manager. I can double-click the icon in Control Panel and I get an hour-glass indicating it's trying to start and then nothing.
A second 1GB RAM chip was installed but Windows XP wouldn't boot up. The power cord was unplugged when the RAM was installed. In F8 the computer recognizes both chips there. In addition, I tried removing the CMOS battery as well. When one RAM chip is in the computer boots up
I have a compaq Presario S5200nx that i do not have the restore disk for, its out of warranty and they dont make the restore discs anymore.
