Aug 12, 2005I just restored and updated all Windows software from Microsoft Update and everytime I double click the Hard Drive I get the Search window. If I turn the Search off I'm not in any specific folder. I used to only receive that when I needed it. Now I have
to Right Click the Drive Letter and Select Open or Explore. How can I fix this issue?

Dec 6, 2005Whenever i doubleclick on any of the Drives(C: , D: ) a windows search window appears, if i have to open i have to rightclick and select open...also i observed that when i right click on my c drive or d drive the first option i have is "search" in bold. and then the next option is open. whereas for anyother folder open is my first option when i right click and in bold!

XP: Folders Don't Open On Double-click, Search Window Opens Instead
Jun 1, 2006I had some spyware/viruses/malware recently, and they've now all been cleaned up with internet security software, but I still have a lingering problem: when I double-click on a folder, instead of the folder opening, a new window opens and it's a search window, with the destination folder (ie the one I just clicked on) as a value in the parameter "look in:". The only way I can just open a folder is to right-click, and select open.
When I right-click on a folder, the menu reads: "Search (bolded) / Open / Explore" etc. which doesn't seem right.
I tried to fix it by changing some options in Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types. There are two kinds of folder, "File Folder" and "Folder". In the advanced options for "File Folder", the only action it lists is "find"... I'm not sure if this is where the problem is or if this is normal? I tried to add a new action, but it wanted me to select an application to perform the action and I have no idea... In the advanced options for "Folder", it looks to be normal, it lists the actions "explore" and "open" (bolded).
The only folder that seems unaffected by this problem is the "Documents" folder on the desktop, and any shortcuts that point to folders.

May 25, 2007i have XP Pro Basically I was messing around in file types because my folder icons were botched. Ran TweakUI to fix folder icons, but here is what happened. double clicking a folder opened the search window. So i went into file types and created a new action, and pointed it at explorer.exe from my windows directory. Now, the problem is, when i double click it opens the folder in a new window, instead of the same.
when I am in the advanced settings of file types (tools-folder options-file types) the Edit and Remove buttons will not light up, but i am the administrator. Restore defaults doesn't work.
Is there a backend way to fix this anyone knows of, short of reformatting ?? system restore to a previous date did nothing.
Double Click C: Opens Install Shield
Sep 28, 2005When I open my computer and double click the c:, an install shield wizard opens and wants me to install the intel extreme graphics driver. I am not able to access the C drive. However, when I right click on c: I can choose open or explore and I can browse the drive. So this is only happening when I left click.
All recent virus/spyware scans are clean (AVG, panda, trendmicro, spybot, adaware, spyware doctor, and ewido). Below is a recent HJT log, although I didn't see anything which would be causing this.
PC Opens The Same Program Over And Over Again With Single Double Click
Jan 7, 2006Every once in a while my pc acts really nutty. What happens is that I'll go to open a program (lets say Nero Burning Rom) and on a single double click Nero will open up 70+ times. Furthermore, it makes mostly all of my programs act up when this starts happening. For example, when I click the arrow in the system tray it expands and collapses tons of times before it stops. If I open Firefox my homepage sort of half loads over and over and won't stop. MSN Messenger opens up then freaks out when I put the pointer in its window (this happens in the above Firefox example too). All of this activity makes the pc unusable until it all stops. Speaking of when it stops, it does't stop with a restart, it just stops mid session. I thought it could be a mouse problem because the trackball I use is pretty ancient and I figured it just might have just petered out finally, but then I tried another mouse that I found laying around and it did the same things. One other thing I've noticed it (the trackball) doing is when it's not being used the pointer slowly crawls towards the top of the screen. I've run my anti-virus and all three of my spyware programs and none of them find anything out of the ordinary. So what could be causing this? I'm starting to think it might be my mouse port, but how would I find this out?

May 18, 2006I was recently in "folder options" and then "file types", just going through and changing icons for disk drives and folders, JPG's and whatnot. Anyway, after doing that, I noticed that if I try to double-click on a disk drive it'll go to Search. And if I double-click on a folder it'll go to Clear Read Only Attributes. I've obviously changed the default action associated with a double-click on folders and disk drives, and I know how to change the default actions undertaken by disc drives and folders and everything else when double-clicked. If I right click on one of my folders and go down and left click on open the folder will open and the contents displayed as I expect (The first opetion displayed is a search after I right click).
