Using Windows 2000pro.. Add/Remove Programs will not open in control panel..Tried the fix suggested by Microsoft to no avail.. Also tried letting Windows Setup repair itself. Still no go
View 5 RepliesI'm on my son's XP. He's been dealing with a hacker. Don't know if we got rid of him yet, but now the Ad/Remove program won't open. I've tried using the Control Pane; from the Start button and from the Computer button. Every other button in the Control Panel Works. And yes we've rebooted many times.

This tinkering cased another alteration: right mouse click on Start|Explore(and Explore All Users) no longer shows all drives (and their directories & sub-folders) on one screen. Now only one drive (with directories & sub-folders) is shown at a time.
When you are under the control panel and you can change the color (blue, olive green, silver) is it possible to get red?

When i go to the control pannel -- add or remove programs, the change/remove button is missing for almost all items. Only a few have it, and they have been recently installed. I have never created the things where you can roll your system back to a specific time inthe past to undo possible problems. Any suggestion on what I might do?

You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."The date has also changed back to january 07 which I cannot change as I cannot access its settings. I corrected the Bios clock which was also wrong but this did not change the date in windows.Programs seem to run OK but some are complaning about the wrong date!

"Run a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close." Get same thing when I do run: appwiz.cpl. Tried SFC /Scannow then Chkdsk c: /f. Also through scan for virus and spyware using McAfee and Spy Sweeper. Nothing seems to work.

The message comes up please wait while the list is being populated and then nothing else happens. The longest I waited was 45 minutes while I went off and did something else. The list never appeared. It can take anywhere from 10-40 seconds to do this. My drive is 40% free.
Thought I'd clean up my system by getting rid of programs I no longer want or use. Only problem is Add or Remove programs refuses to open. I did get it to open once but even after 3 minutes the screen stayed blank. So I thought close it and reopen, except I cant't get it to open.

I use Windows XP. I have two problems using the Add/Remove function in my Control Panel: specifically I want to remove a program called "Creative Zen V Series (R2). The prompt after attempting to remove comes back with "The specific module could not be found" and leaves the program showing. I need to get rid of this entry. Secondly I want to remove "Calendar Creator 9" and when this is selected to remove, I get a prompt that says "To install the program it must first be removed using the Control Panel function Add/Remove. This is frustrating as that is exactly what I'm trying to do, NOT INSTALL the program again.

There is no Change/Remove button in Add/Remove Programs but the program is there, 150 MB, and the file suggested on the HP website for uninstalling older printers from XP produces a message that it's "unsupported" can't remember exact verbiage, been a while since last tried. Even reinstalled in the hopes that a message would come up to the effect "this program is already installed, do you want install to remove it prior to completing this install," but it just installs the printer again with a number after it ... I'm up to "hp officejet g series - 3."
