Change User Name - Tried Control Pannel?
Jul 30, 2008I have just installed Windows Xp Pro Sp2 on my computer. I see after everything is completed I have Administrator as my user name what I would like to know is if there is a way to change the user name safely. I have tried to change the name through the control panel but when I click the user account the option to change account name is not listed .

Jan 2, 2006I'm on my son's XP. He's been dealing with a hacker. Don't know if we got rid of him yet, but now the Ad/Remove program won't open. I've tried using the Control Pane; from the Start button and from the Computer button. Every other button in the Control Panel Works. And yes we've rebooted many times.

When i go to the control pannel -- add or remove programs, the change/remove button is missing for almost all items. Only a few have it, and they have been recently installed. I have never created the things where you can roll your system back to a specific time inthe past to undo possible problems. Any suggestion on what I might do?

Sep 22, 2007when I click on any windows icon in "Control pannel" I get the following message "windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."The date has also changed back to january 07 which I cannot change as I cannot access its settings. I corrected the Bios clock which was also wrong but this did not change the date in windows.Programs seem to run OK but some are complaning about the wrong date!

Sep 1, 2005I want a single desktop click to enable/disable windows XP taskbar auto hide.I can do this if I write a script for the AutoHotkey macro tool to open the relevant dialog box and then check or uncheck the appropriate check box.I'd like to open the dialog box with a command line from AutoHotkey, or a similar operation. Right-clicking the taskbar even in the program is uncool.The catch is, I can execute any CP dialog EXCEPT this one as a command line, either passing a dialog parameter to Control.exe or else using a *.cpl file name with Control.exe or directly. But I can't find "Taskbar and Start Menu".

Jun 15, 2005So i was trying to make some room on y C drive and i guess i deleted some files that i shouldn't To make a long story short now my volume control thingy that stays on my taskbar has dissapeared.When i go to the control panel and to sounds and audio devices and i get in there and there is an icon with the option to place volume icon on the taskbar but when i click on that i get 'windows cannot display the volume control on the task bar because the volume control program has not been installed. After several tries i figured i deleted the windows file soundvol32.exe but how the hell do i get it back and put it in its right place?I have no idea where it would go? Anybody have an idea how i can install that back? I tried using my windows cd but since i put service pack 2 on it it said that the version of windows i had on the cd was older than my current version.

Jul 13, 2005Client's Fujitsu Lifebook N5010. Bunch of icons on the desktop. When she clicks any icon, only the top one in the column is highlighted. And that is the one that responds to a double click. Keyboard cursor will allow selection of other icons. I futzed with this for several hours. The only thing I found is that disabling the Atheros wireless connection (in Network settings) would return full control. Enabling does not return the odd behavior until after a restart. I swapped drivers, both Atheros and mouse/touchpad. No help. Updated to Windows XP SP2 (from SP1).

With a Google search for "desktop display orientation" This worked like a charm for his computer, I discovered that when I right click on the desktop on MY computer, using XP PRO, I can't find anything anywhere on my computer for changing the orientation, i.e., rotation options
Is this a factor of the XP version, or the monitors we are using? Also, I found a mention that the shortcut of "CTRL+ALT+ARROW" will change the orientation, but am hesitant to try it.
New Keyboards Can't Control Volume
Jul 6, 2005Situation: Had MS Natural Keyboard Pro PS2 with the media keys working just fine. Problem... it's a white keyboard and all my stuff is now black or silver. Okay, get a new keyboard, MS Wireless Natural Keyboard. Uninstalled and reinstalled old/new software. ONly problem, the new keyboard can't control volume up/down. It can mute/unmute and all other special keys work.
where the link is that ties those keys in to the main volume control in registery. Here's something interesting: If I plug the old PS2 keyboard in, no drivers, XP recoginizes and all media keys work fine on it including volume. If I keep both keyboards installed simultaneously they both work fine and control everything EXCEPT the new one can't raise/lower the volume, just mute.

Mar 21, 2007I can not get a photo or anything other than a "color" to be my desktop wallpaper. When I am in the control panel - display - the only buttons that are active are the "browse" and "color" buttons. The "position" button does not work. I can't even get one of the Windows backgrounds to display. The photo I choose to use is there somewhere because it is visible briefly when I start mycomputer. Then it disappears and is replaced by a "color" only screen.This is a very recent problem. I'm guessing some settings are incorrect.

Oct 4, 2009I recently purchased an HP 8530w laptop that came with an xp from Vista downgrade preinstalled. I foolishly let Windows update automatically update the OS using the Express mode. It downloaded and installed SP3 and several .NET framework patches. The laptop also came with HP Credential Manager installed. The problem I'm encountering is that even though I logon under an administrator account I can't delete files under any of the USers under documents and settings, including the administrator acciunts Everytime I try to delete a cookie, or remove some documents (under My Documents) the file management program (Explorer or PowerDesk, I use both) pauses and then shuts down, and creates an error message to send to Microsoft. In short the system will allow the administrator to administrate. Can't uninstall SP3 because it doesn't show up in Add/Remove Programs, and can't delete any of the .NET framework updates even though they are listed.

Yesterday I visited a website and opened a file. After I did that, my wallpaper changed and it appeared to be whatever the website was. I was able to somehow get it off (don't ask me what I did, I couldn't tell you). Now, when I click on "Display" in the Control Panel and go to "Desk Top", the only thing that I can change is the color and I can also click on "Customize Desktop", but I cannot change the background or click on browse...".
