Desktop Out Of Control

Client's Fujitsu Lifebook N5010. Bunch of icons on the desktop. When she clicks any icon, only the top one in the column is highlighted. And that is the one that responds to a double click. Keyboard cursor will allow selection of other icons. I futzed with this for several hours. The only thing I found is that disabling the Atheros wireless connection (in Network settings) would return full control. Enabling does not return the odd behavior until after a restart. I swapped drivers, both Atheros and mouse/touchpad. No help. Updated to Windows XP SP2 (from SP1).

my problem is i have no control panel and cant get my desktop propertise also my clock in the bottom right hand corner of my toolbar cant be changed when i try to get desktop propertise i get this error message "this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. please cantact your system administrator

My sister-in-laws' desktop will not display a background. The screen briefly shows her picture and then turns blue and only displays her desktop icons.The display background choices in the control panel are all inoperable and the little screen showing the display preview is white. I had previously changed the font setting from extra large to medium and these settings work.

When I sign in to my server, I need to access the task manager while using remote desktop. I cannot or do not know how to invoke control alt delete from a remote desktop session., so I can see the processes running. Is there another way to see this other then with control alt del?

I have four desktop icons that will not die. The exact method of creation escapes me, but I think it happened thus: As Administrator, Open Control Panel, start TweakUI. In TweakUI, go to Desktop, select Printers/Faxes and Start Menu, then Control Panel and click "Create as File." Fonts, Scheduled Tasks and Administrative Tools may have also been created as files. Anyway, the last four icons now appear on all user desktops and cannot be deleted. Their properties are the same as the Control Panel *.cpl files'. They do not appear in a command box "DIR" of any user. They did turn up in one Nethood folder and could not be deleted there. The container wasn't deletable either. The "Control Panel" file was deletable and both the check-box items went away when unchecked. Norton Windoctor 2005 reports "no problems found."

I want a single desktop click to enable/disable windows XP taskbar auto hide.I can do this if I write a script for the AutoHotkey macro tool to open the relevant dialog box and then check or uncheck the appropriate check box.I'd like to open the dialog box with a command line from AutoHotkey, or a similar operation. Right-clicking the taskbar even in the program is uncool.The catch is, I can execute any CP dialog EXCEPT this one as a command line, either passing a dialog parameter to Control.exe or else using a *.cpl file name with Control.exe or directly. But I can't find "Taskbar and Start Menu".

So i was trying to make some room on y C drive and i guess i deleted some files that i shouldn't To make a long story short now my volume control thingy that stays on my taskbar has dissapeared.When i go to the control panel and to sounds and audio devices and i get in there and there is an icon with the option to place volume icon on the taskbar but when i click on that i get 'windows cannot display the volume control on the task bar because the volume control program has not been installed. After several tries i figured i deleted the windows file soundvol32.exe but how the hell do i get it back and put it in its right place?I have no idea where it would go? Anybody have an idea how i can install that back? I tried using my windows cd but since i put service pack 2 on it it said that the version of windows i had on the cd was older than my current version.

I remember few days ago.. my kaspersky identified some system file as a trojan.. so it probably a misunderstanding when i was installing system mechanic. it got deleted.. and i have this automatic option to delete them after they are put in backup in kaspersky.
now whenever i open my pc, my desktop and taskbar and start menu,etc goes away after a few seconds! Now i rely on the task manager..

Several unwanted desktop icons appeared recently (I think they come via Search2000 when IE is used). They won't right-click for deletion, nor will they allow themselves to be drop-dragged to the recycle bin. They don't appear in the desktop icon list when using the desktop cleanup feature.

When I have either firefox browser or IE6 up and when I minimize my browser or exit out of it, my whole screen goes blank. Every thing from my desktop items and my taskbar disappears for a second or 2. The only thing on my desktop that doesn't go blank is my desktop picture.

Turned on other computer this morning. The desktop wallpaper showed. There were no icons or taskbar. I right click on the desktop and nothing happens. I can do a ctrl+alt+del and access the task manager but have no idea on how to restore my desktop. When I startup in safe mode all I get is a black screen.

I am unable to change desktop wallpaper going through properties then desktop. I right click on desktop, select properties, click on desktop tab i then go to try and browse wallpapers but am unable as the box and scroll are frozen. I also have a problem when i type into run. "regedit" as soon as the registry opens it closes again so i am unable to edit the registry or look through it? This picture is of what my desktop wallpapers looks like..

i am runnings windows xp sp2 with an amd 1200 . all of a sudden when i right click the desktop my system freezes up. Right click work and everything else works the freeze only happens when right click the desktop for the menu.

Computer using XP Home suddenly had the desktop display turn 90 degrees, so it appeared on the side, pointing left. With a Google search for "desktop display orientation" This worked like a charm for his computer, I discovered that when I right click on the desktop on MY computer, using XP PRO, I can't find anything anywhere on my computer for changing the orientation, i.e., rotation options
Is this a factor of the XP version, or the monitors we are using? Also, I found a mention that the shortcut of "CTRL+ALT+ARROW" will change the orientation, but am hesitant to try it.

Situation: Had MS Natural Keyboard Pro PS2 with the media keys working just fine. Problem... it's a white keyboard and all my stuff is now black or silver. Okay, get a new keyboard, MS Wireless Natural Keyboard. Uninstalled and reinstalled old/new software. ONly problem, the new keyboard can't control volume up/down. It can mute/unmute and all other special keys work.
where the link is that ties those keys in to the main volume control in registery. Here's something interesting: If I plug the old PS2 keyboard in, no drivers, XP recoginizes and all media keys work fine on it including volume. If I keep both keyboards installed simultaneously they both work fine and control everything EXCEPT the new one can't raise/lower the volume, just mute.

when i try to start the isa server i get his message "could not start hte microsoft isa server control service on local computer.error 1053: the service did not respond to the start request" any ideas what the hell this means? i have checked that dependencies are all running and they all do seem to be.

I can not get a photo or anything other than a "color" to be my desktop wallpaper. When I am in the control panel - display - the only buttons that are active are the "browse" and "color" buttons. The "position" button does not work. I can't even get one of the Windows backgrounds to display. The photo I choose to use is there somewhere because it is visible briefly when I start mycomputer. Then it disappears and is replaced by a "color" only screen.This is a very recent problem. I'm guessing some settings are incorrect.

I click on the volume control icon, and it "opens" on the task bar, but it doesnt show up on the screen. I can close it by right clicking its 'bubble' on the taskbar, and selecting close.I just can't see it when its open, and i cant figure out why.I have tried restarting the computer, and reinstalling the sound card drivers. Can i reinstall the volume control in XP, like you can in 98?

Ive never seen this before but i guess it was the work of a virus on my computer but everytime i try to hit ctrl alt dlt, there is a notification that pops up that says "The task manager has been disabled by your administrator". But i dont know how to get in there and re-enable it.
