I decided to use system restore for the first time since I reinstalled xp Pro about 6 months ago. So I picked a point three days old and let the computer reboot only to be informed that System Restore was unable to restore to that date. I picked another one about a week older and tried again. Same message. I checked the event logs but couldn't find anything except a confirmation of the above. I checked to see if the System Restore slider was maxed and it was. However I did discover that I have two Systgem Restore files on my computer, one on the C drive and one on D which I bascially use for storage. I opened the file on D and found nothing unusual, it contained about 25MB of data.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to do a system restore and my system runs it all but when all is done I get a message saying that no changes have been made to my system and that the system restore was unsuccessful. The reason I am trying to restore my system is because Photoshop is suddenly unable to save as a jpeg? It doesn't recognise the jpeg format when saving and saves as a Photoshop document. THen it wont recognise the file to open it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program to no avail. Funnily enough photoshop elements has no problem with it.

I resolved it by using Gateway Restore, which effectively created another partition on my hard drive, and reinstalling XP into it. However, during the restore process, the process said my files and data would be moved into a backup folder. Only the most superficial parts of my data was saved, but my hard drive, which is 160 gigs in size, now has 3.6 gigs for the operating system, 8.6 gigs of stuff from my recovery, and free space of about 12 some odd gig. My old system, and all my data, is in the accounted for partition. How do I access that partition of my hard drive?

The window that appears states that it may take a few minutes and the computer will restart but nothing happens. I have pro XP including SP 2. MS support says format and reinstall but I will loose a lot of business. If I backup all with Acronis I may reinstall the same problem in the process again. Any magician out there who can help ? By the way I tried to repair through upgrading XP without new installing but nothing changes. I also deleted the previous RS points and created new ones, no change either.

I find that GPEDIT effects ALL user rights, so when I want to prevent my app user from being able to right-click on the desktop (for example), if I got to GPEDIT > USER CONFIG > ADMIN TEMPLATES , anything I do there dorks up my admin user as well.These machines will not connect to a domain controller so they have to be locally administered.

The restarts are very random and very often, sometimes it restarts when Windows XP is loading, not good for keeping the boot files okay. Does anybody know what this may be, I haven't made any recent changes to the OS or hardware since I rebuilt it (and it has been fine since then).

The UI gets crowded to the point where I cannot click on what I need to, or type what I need to, and in some cases I have to use another program entirely. This has happened to over 10 programs that I recall, and the 'severity' of the bugginess runs from this: which isn't bad, mainly cut off unclickable words and boxes, to this. which is completely and literally unusable (I also need to get this particular one working soon, so if there's a quick fix it would be really appreciated). I see a lot more of the second type, I can provide more examples if asked.I enclosed the dxdiag in hopes that that might help. The one and only thing I might see that would cause this is I have a custom theme, but I've disabled it with no results.

1) Open Regedit and navigate to HKEY_Local_MachineSystemCurrentControlSetControlBackupRestoreFilesNotTobackup2) Choose Edit, new, multi-string value3) Give a descriptive name4) Double-click the value and input the full folder path you wish to exclude and click OKSystem restore will no longer monitor this folder and backups will not be made of the files contained in it.
When i start my windows XP proffessional a lot of programs are started like yahoo messenger etc and it takes lot of time for eac of these to load. So i tried "msconfig" to customize which programs to start when the system boots.But each time i start i get a message from "msconfig" program that " this is not the normal startup and suggests to revert back to normal start up (which starts all the progs).I want only specific programs to start when i my computer starts.
1)Is there a better way to change this apart from "msconfig" ?
2) How can i avoid that message that mscofig gives?
3) Are there any other problems i want only selective programs to start ?
Is it possible for me to use the system repair tool (the one that comes up when you boot from the Windows XP CD and press R at the menu) to format only a specific partition on a hard drive, or do you always have to erase the whole drive.

Problems:
1. Flash has stopped operating.
2. System Restore gives me an error message, "Cannot Be Restored" -- I've tried multiple restore points.
I tried downloading simple Flash and got the error message "No Platform for this application". Shockwave Flash did install, but my flash animation is still not working.

Does anyone know how to fix a Ntfs.sys file without resorting to using the OS installation CDs? I got the message the about Windows not being able to start because of a missing or corrupt Ntfs.sys. Because I don't have the installation CDs I just copied a Ntfs.sys file off the other PC in our house put it on my flash disk and restarted the PC with this message. It booted up fine into windows but my system is unstable, it restarts at random. Sometimes it works ok and then sometimes it reboots repeatedly, and I got the message again a few times but I just press the reset button and it boots up fine again. So I am able to work in windows, can I fix the file in windows without doing that whole thing with the installation CDs and RC session?

I can get back to where I did it but the box is so big now that the option of hitting "apply" is not able to be seen. Is there any other way to restore my display settings?
View 13 Replies View RelatedRunning XP on a Sony PVC-RX770 (3 years old). I can never get to a secure site. Message says to re-set security levels which I have done over and over. I have tried restoring system to earlier times with negative results. Sony did not help. I can't even load Norton, buy things, see my bank statements, etc. Here may be a clue. I am sometimes told my system won't accept ActiveX code. I am also told I need to add a drive. I press continue and system runs OK (except the the security problem).

It does this all the time, even in safe mode. Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue. I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. I tried to install yesterday (28th July) but could'nt and my PC keeps switching itself off near the end of the installation. View 7 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.
My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. I bought an external HD, completely backed up everything important and was about to run a system restore as I had created a manual restore point following the resolution of previous problems. The link to the thread is found below. However, when I use the system restore wizard, I can only select November 8th, 9th, and 10th and today is the 10th. I created the manual restore point back in March 2006. I cannot change the month and I have no idea where to find manual points.
