When using system restore to back up your data, you might want to make sure that you are not wasting backup space by saving useless folders that may include temp file or other non-necessary files. To exclude folders, follow the directions below.
1) Open Regedit and navigate to HKEY_Local_MachineSystemCurrentControlSetControlBackupRestoreFilesNotTobackup2) Choose Edit, new, multi-string value3) Give a descriptive name4) Double-click the value and input the full folder path you wish to exclude and click OKSystem restore will no longer monitor this folder and backups will not be made of the files contained in it.
My brother just had a tech guy come to his house to fix a problem he was having with his email.Unrelated to that issue The tech guy recommended not using system restore My brother does not remember the specific reason for this but thought the tech guy said you can't trust system restore as it could lose things and make matters worse
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a lot of pictures on my laptop. I still have plenty of space left on the hard drive. I save new pictures into a specific folder, then I go to retrieve them and I cannot find them. I can see them in "recent" documents but not in the folder that I put them in.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have had this problem for a couple of years now, even in a few different computers. I have a folder with files I am keeping, copying it from computer to computer when I change computers. In this folder I am unable to see folder/file names unless I mark them. This has irritated me to some extent since there are around 12-13000 files in this folder by now. I have asked around at computer-tech stores, and some of my more or less nerdy friends. One of wich is mostly always able to help me but not with this.

Now, I had one folder that I backed up, but now everytime I try to enter it, it says Access Denied. I did hide this folder on my hard drive before, but all of my other hidden folders that I backed up work fine. I would really appreciate it if somebody could tell me how to gain access to this folder, I have very important information in it.

I find that GPEDIT effects ALL user rights, so when I want to prevent my app user from being able to right-click on the desktop (for example), if I got to GPEDIT > USER CONFIG > ADMIN TEMPLATES , anything I do there dorks up my admin user as well. These machines will not connect to a domain controller so they have to be locally administered.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI accidentally deleted my entire "My Music" folder from the "My Documents" folder after moving a bunch of files from it to an external hard drive. It was permanently deleted - did not go to the recycle bin first. System Restore did not bring it back.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm using Win XP Pro SP3. When my files in "My Documents" outgrew my hard drive's capacity a while back I bought a new hard drive and decided to move my "My Documents" onto the new F: drive, leaving everything else on the original hard drive. It seemed like the simplest solution to my problem at the time. The situation does create a few syntax problems revolving around the question "When is the 'My Documents' folder not really the 'My Documents' system folder?" Most of the time I don't have any problems with the arrangement, but there are a couple of anomalies. At present my command line environment variables do not have any easy way to point to "My Documents" because (for example) %userprofile%My Documents points to the folder on c: that used to be the 'My Documents' system folder rather than to the current location of the system folder.
That is not usually a big deal but it may be related to the more frequent problem. A few ill-behaved programs expect to find and store files in %userprofile%My Documents (which is on C: drive) rather than in the actual system folder "My Documents" on F: which makes it harder to find these files when I search for them. Just to 'simplify' the situation I thought about setting a reparse point in the old "My Documents" folder ( %userprofile%My Documents ) that points to the actual system folder (which is F:My Documents ) Tinkering with settings like this has potential to break things in unexpected ways so I thought I'd ask whether there are any obvious problems with the 'solution'. Or are there better ways to keep the user documents on a second hard drive?
I use the Show Desktop feature on my taskbar often, however this also minimizes my dock. I have a program called Rocket Dock that I would like to stay maximized when I click Show Desktop so I was wondering if there's a way to exclude this program from being minimized.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having problems with various programs that I've had work on other computers fine. The UI gets crowded to the point where I cannot click on what I need to, or type what I need to, and in some cases I have to use another program entirely. This has happened to over 10 programs that I recall, and the 'severity' of the bugginess runs from this: which isn't bad, mainly cut off unclickable words and boxes, to this. which is completely and literally unusable (I also need to get this particular one working soon, so if there's a quick fix it would be really appreciated). I see a lot more of the second type, I can provide more examples if asked.I enclosed the dxdiag in hopes that that might help. The one and only thing I might see that would cause this is I have a custom theme, but I've disabled it with no results.

I'm absolutely dumbstruck by what just happened. I was a little too quick with my clicking, and instead of opening the folder containing my pictures, I dragged it into another folder called "14941b93d3ad9f41aa7df524fe". I will refer to it as the folder of doom. The folder contains two sub-folders

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a 3Ghz AMD with 1Gb RAM, 160Gb HDD, Win XP SP2 installed. The HDD is divided into 3 partitions - OS, Documents and Program. She has a network with her children's computers (4!) but whilst they can ping each other, they are not actually networked to each other.
I installed Nero 6. Burning and Cyberlink DVD on to her computer. Both were installed on the Program partition. At that point, all her documents and images were in the "My Documents" folder on the Documents partition and were all visible and working. Within the My Documents folder was a folder called "My Documents 1" which was all the stuff she had brought over from her old HDD but not yet sorted and merged with her current computer.
"My Documents folder" in the Documents partition had vanished, along with all her word, music and photo files.Webshot photos folder had also vanished. A search through Windows did not turn any of these up. I scanned the whole computer and found no trace of them. All the System Restore checkpoints for the last 5 days failed to restore the system to what it was prior to the installations. System Restore Incomplete - unable to finish or something to that effect. When I ran both the antivirus and spyware programs, the AVG run was clean but the spyware turned up 64 tracking cookies but no high level issues. (She felt running these programs daily chewed up too much time etc etc. Even when I told her to run all 5 computers at least once weekly (Boot up, start the scanning programs, get the updates and run them then leave them to do their scanning, walk away go do some shopping and check the results when you get back - too easy of course she did not do any backups which steps to take? Programs to use to try and recover her folders?

Installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and now, whenever I try and do a system restore it says "System restore encountered a problem and has to close". It does this all the time, even in safe mode. Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue. I have been onto the Microsoft websites and they do not mention how to repair or reinstall system restore

View 7 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.
My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. So I can get on now, but certain things won't run, like Media Centre, Firefox has forgotten my settings and also my iriver doesn't get acknowledged when I plug it into a USB port.So I am trying to run System restore to go back a couple of days.I can get into restore, and go through everything up to the point where you click 'next' in order to restore it.I click on next but nothing happens, it just stays there.

However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go.
