MS Pro Restore Function Fails To Process The Restoring

Jun 1, 2006

System restore sets restore points but if prompted to any one of them it fails to process the action required. The window that appears states that it may take a few minutes and the computer will restart but nothing happens. I have pro XP including SP 2. MS support says format and reinstall but I will loose a lot of business. If I backup all with Acronis I may reinstall the same problem in the process again. Any magician out there who can help ? By the way I tried to repair through upgrading XP without new installing but nothing changes. I also deleted the previous RS points and created new ones, no change either.

System Restore Not Restoring

Mar 22, 2007

I decided to use system restore for the first time since I reinstalled xp Pro about 6 months ago. So I picked a point three days old and let the computer reboot only to be informed that System Restore was unable to restore to that date. I picked another one about a week older and tried again. Same message. I checked the event logs but couldn't find anything except a confirmation of the above. I checked to see if the System Restore slider was maxed and it was. However I did discover that I have two Systgem Restore files on my computer, one on the C drive and one on D which I bascially use for storage. I opened the file on D and found nothing unusual, it contained about 25MB of data.

System Restore Does Not Function

May 15, 2009

My computer still creates restore points (manually and automatically) and it goes through the entire process of restoring, but at the very end (after the restart) it announces "No changes have been made to your computer. Unable to restore." I tried shutting off Restore Option, to clear restore points, but that did not help. Two Registry cleaner programs don't seem to find/fix the problem, either. I have AVG Full Edition running with Zone Alarm's firewall, and Window's Defender running in background. Everything seems to work fine, but if something shows up.

Restore Function Not Working

Jan 3, 2006

I have an unusual problem with the windows restore function on my computer. It seems to still be making automatic restore points periodically along with the ones that I create. However, I am unable to restore to any of the earlier time points. I have used all of the virus and adware/spyware programs on my computer to check for problems and they all report my computer as clean. Does anybody have any idea of what might be causing this or any suggestions to repair this without reinstalling the entire system again?

The system I have: Hewlett Packard 533w, Windows Xp SP1, Intel Celeron CPU 2.00 GHz, 256 MB RAM, Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller. have also installed the unofficial patch for the WMF flaw. Installed on my computer: Norton AV 2005, Zone Alarm Firewall (newest free version), AdAware SE Personal, Spybot Search & Destroy 1.4, Spyware Blaster 3.5.1, Spyware Guard 2.2, Ewido Anti-Malware 3.5, Arovax Antispyware 1.0.494, Arovax Shield 1.2.314, Spy Defense 0.9.5.118, HiJack This Scanner, CWShredder 2.19, Blacklight Rootkit Eliminator, Rootkit Revealer, and Earthlink SpyAudit

System Restore Fails

Mar 27, 2008

I recently somehow ended up with virusheat on my computer, but the real problem came when i got rid out it. I first tried using spybot and adaware to delete the virus, but that didn't seem to work and i eventually just tried to uninstall it. When I clicked uninstall, it seemed to also delete many of my other programs and scambled the locations of many links. now many programs, like mozilla, doesn't work. Everytime i tried to do something, i got the BSOD. I eventually got rid of Virusheat and the BSODs with malwarebytes', but I still do not have all of the stuff Virusheat deleted. So that when i tried to system restore my comp. That doesn't work, even in safe mode; I just get the "no changes have been made to my system" thing after the system restore reboots my comp. I don't have Norton on my comp, as far as i know (I can't really cheack because search stopped working). My system restore is definetly on and i have many different restore points prior to the virus. I need to know if there is a way to return my comp to the state it was in, before the infection

BSOD For A Winlogon.exe Restoring From A Restore

Sep 25, 2009

I experienced a BSOD for a winlogon.exe error. I resolved it by using Gateway Restore, which effectively created another partition on my hard drive, and reinstalling XP into it. However, during the restore process, the process said my files and data would be moved into a backup folder. Only the most superficial parts of my data was saved, but my hard drive, which is 160 gigs in size, now has 3.6 gigs for the operating system, 8.6 gigs of stuff from my recovery, and free space of about 12 some odd gig. My old system, and all my data, is in the accounted for partition. How do I access that partition of my hard drive?

System Restore Function Was Disabled

Jun 2, 2010

My wife's computer is running XP Pro with all the latest updates and every malware/spyware/trojan checker I've run reports no infections, neither does AVG 9.0. I say this first as a background. The problem was first found when the computer was found off when it was last known to be on. Upon turning on the computer, as the Windows splash screen was displayed, the computer turned itself off again. I tried this several times and it would always turn itself off during the splash screen. I then decided to attempt to boot in safe mode. I was able to boot it up and I've disabled all start-up programs that aren't absolutely needed. I am then able to reboot into standard mode and everything works well for several hours, but next thing I know, it is off again. I originally thought it was a power issue and put a brand-new overkill PSU in. I also checked the heat of the CPU and everything else the motherboard diagnostics allow me to check and everything checked out fine. I booted up a thumbdrive with memtest86+ and it ran all night and didn't report any errors. Unfortunately, for some reason the system restore function was disabled (I do not remember doing this) so there was no restore point to attempt.

System Restore Function Needed

Aug 27, 2009

I know that many viruses and other malware, as part of their attack, delete all restore dates so that the user has no date to return to. Is there a way to back this info up on removable media? It would seem that, after an attack, one could copy this back onto the main harddrive and then be able to use the System Restore function. If so, what's the filename(s) where this info is stored?

Every Program - System Restore Fails

Feb 7, 2009

It started yesterday when I got the DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has failed window hundreds of times. I managed to stop that by deleting it from regedit which I did back-up. All the other problems I've been having are still here though. When I start windows, before the login screen, I get an error message from spoolsv.exe. After I login, I get my desktop backround and mouse pointer but nothing else. I run task manager and am able to run explorer from there. Everything starts up but many progams fail, most of which I have no idea what they are. After visiting many sites regarding the DrWatson problem, I downloaded many anti-virus programs such as Spy Sweeper and Spybot but they fail when I go to run them. I've tried free online scans but they stop in the middle of scanning. No problems with my browser, the scans just stop. I would love to simply re-install windows but my CD drive won't open, not even when I use the pinhole. System Restore fails when I run it

When Fails To Restore From 3rd Party Backup Files

Dec 14, 2007

Recently, Windows XP could not Restore the system to Restore Points created by it, OR even to Restore Points set by third-party anti-Spyware programs.I am using AVG Free Edition, PC Tools Spyware Doctor, and also Spyware Terminator, along with the Firewall of Windows XP, for on-line protection whilst surfing the Internet.Additionally, CCleaner and CheckLinks both Freewares are used, once a week or so, to remove unwanted cookies, dead links, temporary files etc.Since these Freewares also create Restore Points, I would like to know whether this affects Restoring of the system to EARLIER Restore Points created by Windows XP. To overcome this problem would it be safe to run the above-mentioned Freeware programs without allowing these to create their individual Restore Points and then create new Restore Points with Windows XP ?

Restoring From The CD

Restoring Crashed Using BKF

Aug 24, 2008

It is ironic that I am here, because I own a tech business, but I have been stumped so long that I need to go ask the big-guns.My problem: My computer was acting up.My solution: Reinstall XP.My second problem: I have a SATA drive which XP doesn't support by default. My solution: Use nLite to package my drivers into my install disc and burn a new copy.My third problem: install goes as planned, but when the computer starts up it gets to the Windows Logo loading-screen and crashes right as the blue bar enters the screen. The computer simply freezes, shuts down, reboots, and says "Windows did not shut down properly" or whatever the hell it says.So now I have no clue what to do. I know it's not the wrong drivers--I got them directly from ASUS's website and made sure it's the 32-bit Windows XP drivers.

I have tried reinstalling Windows like 10 times over the past 3 days, so I know it wasn't just a faulty install. My CD drive is 6 months old and my hard drive 2 months old. They both run perfectly, so I know it's not them.Being the genius I am, I backed up my entire hard-drive on a BKF file with a clean install!
So now I can just use the BKF file to write to my hard drive... if I had a working computer. So here's my situation: I'd accept a helpful fix for the thing above, but I don't think there will be any fixes for it that I haven't already tried. But what I really do want is some advice on how to write my BKF file to my SATA HDD. I have my SATA connected to my computer via an external USB converter-switch-like-thing, so I have access to it. The BKF is stored on my laptop's HDD, but my Laptop is Vista (ewwie). I need to know how to take the BKF file from my Vista laptop and restore it onto my SATA HDD that is attached via USB. Vista's restore capability doesn't support XP's BKF files, so I was wondering if anybody knows of a third-party application or any way to get this back up, and quickly. I'm a developer and my computer has been down for 3 days!
