Background Programmes Interfering System Restore Process

I have a 300gb (D)drive and an 80gb (C) drive. There have been a number of occasions in the recent past when due to virus infestation or software failure I have wanted to use the System Restore function. The system restore opens , I select my earlier date and the process commences but within a few seconds the progress bar shoots to the end, the PC shuts down and restarts and then I get a message that it has not been possible to restore to the selected date. i've been trying to do a system restore (manually, it's not like the system is doing it on his own), but in the end when it's supposed to show the message of having finished the process, it always says that the system couldn't be restored. I've tryied several restoration points, but no matter how different or how far it just won't do.

I have windows xp home edition. I know the startup tab is all the programs that load when i turn my computer on. What are all the programs that are either stopped or running under the "services" tab? What would happen if I disabled them all? Do I need them? I am just trying to make my computer a bit faster and Between my startup tap and services every single box in startup is checked and my problem is I don't know what the abbreviations mean and I don't know if I can safefy turn them off.

When I do a totally fresh install of XP SP3 the machine seems to have some background process that constantly uses +/- 33% cpu utilization. - I have installed all the drivers and device manager reports no problems, but still the 33% issue remains. NOT hardware, as everything is ok in either Vista of Windows 7

I have a window flashing on the task bar briefly. Just a little box like a new window opening that appears then disappears without opening a window. It usually doesn't bother me, but when I'm playing a game like far Cry for instance, it minimizes the game, which besides being very annoying also causes the game to play poorly sometimes when I go back into the game. Does anyone know a way to figure out what program is causing this or how to stop it?

System Idle Process is at top of processes tab in windows task manager. I've read in an earlier post this causes cpu spikes. should I just highlight it and click end process? or is there something else I need to do.

System restore sets restore points but if prompted to any one of them it fails to process the action required. The window that appears states that it may take a few minutes and the computer will restart but nothing happens. I have pro XP including SP 2. MS support says format and reinstall but I will loose a lot of business. If I backup all with Acronis I may reinstall the same problem in the process again. Any magician out there who can help ? By the way I tried to repair through upgrading XP without new installing but nothing changes. I also deleted the previous RS points and created new ones, no change either.

I had a wallpaper background on my computer, but it was suddenly replaced by a white background that says Display Problem in a big blue triangle. Under it there was a box that said "Click here to restore background" or something like that. When I clicked on it my background became a solid blue background. I tried changing it by right clicking, but when the Properties windows opens, the only folders that show up are the Screensaver and Settings folders. All the others are gone.I can change the wallpaper when I go to My Pictures and right click and set up as background, but the screen remains blue and you can only see the picture briefly when powering on and off

my desk top takes ages to load, I have read somewhere that I may have to many programmes on start up, most of the time I just need to connect to the internet, is there any way to stop some programmes running on start up, and if so is it easy to still access the other programmes once I have done this if I need them, I have windows XP,

I went to control panel and to add remove and i double clicked it none of the programs appear it just says please wait while the list is being populated.
i can't get to delete anything now.

When clicking icons to start or re-awakening programmes from the bottom tray they take a very long time to activate. Programmes from the bottom tray re-activate in stages. Shut down is taking a lot longer as well. SP2 is installed but it was like this before that was installed.

Everything that I open is coruptted ALMOST everything, some programs will install correctly, but after a short few hours some of them will not even open, like when say I click on Dvd Shrink it just does nothing.
Ive Reinstalled the programs plenty of times NOTHING.
Half Life 2Norton Antivirus 2005 in stalled from 2 different cd roms that have been cleaned numerous times will not install says corupted cab files or various other files corupted

after copying win xp setup files n re-starting i get this message "system manager initialization system process terminated unexpectantly with a status of 0x000026c, the system has shut down" need explanation and help to resolve this issue thanx.......also note, winxp was installing on the same hard drive just fine on another motherboard so.........could the M/B be the prob?

Installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and now, whenever I try and do a system restore it says "System restore encountered a problem and has to close". It does this all the time, even in safe mode. Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue. I have been onto the Microsoft websites and they do not mention how to repair or reinstall system restore

I ALT+CTRL+DEL to bring up my processes and i noticed at the bottom of that window that SYSTEM IDLE PROCESS is taking up 80-99% so i watch it for awhile and it doesnt go down at all, the lowest i seen it was 77%.Now i have about 30-40 things running in the Background not a problem for my computer. I have 2 Gigs of RAM should be more then enough. but this process is really slowing me down.

I recently downloaded some drivers as I was trying to install a new printer who's software would'nt load. This did'nt solve the problem. I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. I tried to install yesterday (28th July) but could'nt and my PC keeps switching itself off near the end of the installation. I then thought I would use System restore to go back to a happier time when I had the first Brother printer. previous saved point wont let me to restore

I was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.

My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. So I can get on now, but certain things won't run, like Media Centre, Firefox has forgotten my settings and also my iriver doesn't get acknowledged when I plug it into a USB port.So I am trying to run System restore to go back a couple of days.I can get into restore, and go through everything up to the point where you click 'next' in order to restore it.I click on next but nothing happens, it just stays there.

I am unable to acess any of my or XP's restore points. When I went to restore to an earlier date. All appeared to be going as it should. However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. Any help would be greatly appreciated? Is there a utility to use to check and see if there is something corrupted?

I'm trying to do a system restore without success. It goes through the motions but after it restarts always say "cannot use restore point, no changes have been made to your system". I'm trying to correct a font setting change that happened without my knowledge.

Whenever I pop in a CD, my computer freezes over, and if I happen to get into the Windows Task Manager screen, it tells me that the System Idle Process is using 99 of my computer. What is happening here? This also happens when I leave the computer on for too long

i want to restore my laptop. had restore turned on until about 3 weeks ago shut it off. question:if you shut off restore does it still keep the last restore points? and is there a way to restore in safe mode (cant boot in reg mode) if restore is shut of. when i try and turn on sys restore in safe mode it say "i cant"

My comp has been experiencing several problems and is running poorly. I bought an external HD, completely backed up everything important and was about to run a system restore as I had created a manual restore point following the resolution of previous problems. The link to the thread is found below. However, when I use the system restore wizard, I can only select November 8th, 9th, and 10th and today is the 10th. I created the manual restore point back in March 2006. I cannot change the month and I have no idea where to find manual points.

My system restore is enabled but no matter what bold restoration point I choose I am told system can't be restored to that date, choose another restoration point. I do, the system shuts down and restarts and I get the same message.
