System Restore Function Was Disabled
Jun 2, 2010
My wife's computer is running XP Pro with all the latest updates and every malware/spyware/trojan checker I've run reports no infections, neither does AVG 9.0. I say this first as a background. The problem was first found when the computer was found off when it was last known to be on. Upon turning on the computer, as the Windows splash screen was displayed, the computer turned itself off again. I tried this several times and it would always turn itself off during the splash screen. I then decided to attempt to boot in safe mode. I was able to boot it up and I've disabled all start-up programs that aren't absolutely needed. I am then able to reboot into standard mode and everything works well for several hours, but next thing I know, it is off again. I originally thought it was a power issue and put a brand-new overkill PSU in. I also checked the heat of the CPU and everything else the motherboard diagnostics allow me to check and everything checked out fine. I booted up a thumbdrive with memtest86+ and it ran all night and didn't report any errors. Unfortunately, for some reason the system restore function was disabled (I do not remember doing this) so there was no restore point to attempt.

My computer still creates restore points (manually and automatically) and it goes through the entire process of restoring, but at the very end (after the restart) it announces "No changes have been made to your computer. Unable to restore." I tried shutting off Restore Option, to clear restore points, but that did not help. Two Registry cleaner programs don't seem to find/fix the problem, either. I have AVG Full Edition running with Zone Alarm's firewall, and Window's Defender running in background. Everything seems to work fine, but if something shows up.

I know that many viruses and other malware, as part of their attack, delete all restore dates so that the user has no date to return to. Is there a way to back this info up on removable media? It would seem that, after an attack, one could copy this back onto the main harddrive and then be able to use the System Restore function. If so, what's the filename(s) where this info is stored?

The search function in windows xp appears to be disabled. Clicking on the Search button in any window has no effect. This might or might not be related to a second problem I'm experiencing. System Restore has been mysteriously turned off and I cannot turn it back on. Checking off the 'Turn off System Restore' checkbox and clicking on 'Apply' results in the following message: "System Restore encountered an error trying to enable one or more drives. Please restart your maching and try again." Restarting, of course, has no effect. Btw, the 'Status' section of the System Restore window indicates the following: "(C) Turned off. Not sure what that means.

My computer was having a personality disorder so I decided to save all my files from the hard drive and do a system restore back to the original factory settings. I don't have the installation disks anymore and would like to avoid having to order them. When I started the process, the desktop locked up on me. The keyboard wasn't recognized and I couldn't mouse to any programs or functions. It didn't even complete it's startup sequence, and the icons on the right side by the clock never showed up.
So I restarted the computer in safe mode and saved my files. When I tried to do a system restore from safe mode, I got an error stating that system restore was disabled and couldn't be enabled in safe mode. I'd have to restart in normal mode and change the settings. Therein lies the problem: when I start in normal mode the computer locks up immediately, and I can't change the settings

I have an unusual problem with the windows restore function on my computer. It seems to still be making automatic restore points periodically along with the ones that I create. However, I am unable to restore to any of the earlier time points. I have used all of the virus and adware/spyware programs on my computer to check for problems and they all report my computer as clean. Does anybody have any idea of what might be causing this or any suggestions to repair this without reinstalling the entire system again?
The system I have: Hewlett Packard 533w, Windows Xp SP1, Intel Celeron CPU 2.00 GHz, 256 MB RAM, Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller. have also installed the unofficial patch for the WMF flaw. Installed on my computer: Norton AV 2005, Zone Alarm Firewall (newest free version), AdAware SE Personal, Spybot Search & Destroy 1.4, Spyware Blaster 3.5.1, Spyware Guard 2.2, Ewido Anti-Malware 3.5, Arovax Antispyware 1.0.494, Arovax Shield 1.2.314, Spy Defense 0.9.5.118, HiJack This Scanner, CWShredder 2.19, Blacklight Rootkit Eliminator, Rootkit Revealer, and Earthlink SpyAudit

System restore sets restore points but if prompted to any one of them it fails to process the action required. The window that appears states that it may take a few minutes and the computer will restart but nothing happens. I have pro XP including SP 2. MS support says format and reinstall but I will loose a lot of business. If I backup all with Acronis I may reinstall the same problem in the process again. Any magician out there who can help ? By the way I tried to repair through upgrading XP without new installing but nothing changes. I also deleted the previous RS points and created new ones, no change either.

I am working on a PC for a friend and after installing Adaware,Spybot S&D, Spywareblaster and Avast I found too many things wrong with the PC and was trying to just reinstall Windows instead. I followed Dells instructions to Hold down Control and then hit F11 and then release both at the same time to get to the restore screen. Well it never came up and I got to the Safe Mode Last Known Good Configuration screen instead. I kept trying and nothing would change, so I picked Safe Mode. Now all I get is the BSOD that states Unmountable boot volume. Stop Error 0x000000ed (0x83376900,0xc0000006,0x0000000,0x0000000)

I have a new HP m1070y media center computer that came with the OS already installed on it (XP media center edition 2005). I was looking at the system event log and I see scores of errors with the event ID of 7011. I could not find information that was detailed and specific enough to help me. Out of curiosity, I ran SFC /scannow to see if any clues would arise from that. When it got near the end of running it discovered a half-dozen DLL's that were missing that "may cause windows to not function correctly". No details were given as to what DLL's were missinng it simply asked for disc 2 of the XP Pro set. I do not have a XP Pro disc set because the OS and recovery partition are pre installed. I did not see any way to browse for the files that are missing. Is there an alternate way of replacing those missing files without having to purchase XP pro? Perhaps the DLL's are missing by design since the removal of of domain capabilities in MCE2005? Are there other utilities that can pin-point exactly which files are missing so that I can replace them manually?

I've had this ax8 board for some time. Previously, I'd been using an av8. Here's a run down of what I've experienced. With all the default devices enabled in bios, random irq/driver irq not less than or equal BSOD's. Disabled on board FDC, still bsods. Disabled onboard LAN, still bsods. Disabled IDE controllers, still BSOD's. I've tried a pcie and pci card, still bsods. Tried SATA 3&4, still BSODs. I replaced my USB keyboard/mouse with an old ps/2 keyboard and mouse, unplugged my usb headset, and it hasn't crashed since.

The thread title sums it up real nice, but for a sake of offering this giant textfield some reasonable use, I can wax a bit about hows and whys. I disabled some services to speed up my system. Not that it would need it, or that I would notice it. Why do I need a spooler service if I don't even own a printer? I guess I got carried away, and on the next restart the login took MUCH longer than before. Then I noticed that the internet pages were loading much more slowly, though their response times and download speed remained the same. And that's my biggest issue at the moment.

Installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and now, whenever I try and do a system restore it says "System restore encountered a problem and has to close". It does this all the time, even in safe mode. Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue. I have been onto the Microsoft websites and they do not mention how to repair or reinstall system restore

I was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.

My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. So I can get on now, but certain things won't run, like Media Centre, Firefox has forgotten my settings and also my iriver doesn't get acknowledged when I plug it into a USB port.So I am trying to run System restore to go back a couple of days.I can get into restore, and go through everything up to the point where you click 'next' in order to restore it.I click on next but nothing happens, it just stays there.

I am unable to acess any of my or XP's restore points. When I went to restore to an earlier date. All appeared to be going as it should. However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. Any help would be greatly appreciated? Is there a utility to use to check and see if there is something corrupted?

My comp has been experiencing several problems and is running poorly. I bought an external HD, completely backed up everything important and was about to run a system restore as I had created a manual restore point following the resolution of previous problems. The link to the thread is found below. However, when I use the system restore wizard, I can only select November 8th, 9th, and 10th and today is the 10th. I created the manual restore point back in March 2006. I cannot change the month and I have no idea where to find manual points.
