Disabled A System Service Now Some Things Take Forever

Mar 22, 2008

The thread title sums it up real nice, but for a sake of offering this giant textfield some reasonable use, I can wax a bit about hows and whys. I disabled some services to speed up my system. Not that it would need it, or that I would notice it. Why do I need a spooler service if I don't even own a printer? I guess I got carried away, and on the next restart the login took MUCH longer than before. Then I noticed that the internet pages were loading much more slowly, though their response times and download speed remained the same. And that's my biggest issue at the moment.

Everything Done On The System Stores Forever?

Sep 25, 2007

I read somewhere that "Every keystroke, every click.... in fact everything you do on your PC is being stored right this minute, slowing your PC down to a crawl and keeping your vital information up for grabs?", but is it true? I mean once a month, I run CCleaner to clean my temporary file so my computer won't be so slow, but is that information still there? and is there a way to clean it for I could gain more speed?

Msconfig Mishap- Service Disabled Accidentally ?

Apr 11, 2005

I was using the msconfig to manage startup programs and services. I had to temporarily diasble all start up programs, and right after (no restart) i went to the services tab. I wanted to check the "hide all ms services" but accidentally i clicked on "disable all services." msconfig froze, so ended it and started it again. I went on the service tab and most of the services were gone (all essential & virusscan stayed).

Then I restarted it, and windows asked me to reactivate my account. I cliked on (do it through internet" and tried it. It didnt work. It said that there was no internet. I clicked on "remind me later" and the desktop loaded. My theme is now the classic theme! so i tried to change the theme and the the "blue/ silver/olive" themes weren't there. So then i went to the help topics and it said "please run the help service" i did not know what this meant.

System Restore Function Was Disabled

Jun 2, 2010

My wife's computer is running XP Pro with all the latest updates and every malware/spyware/trojan checker I've run reports no infections, neither does AVG 9.0. I say this first as a background. The problem was first found when the computer was found off when it was last known to be on. Upon turning on the computer, as the Windows splash screen was displayed, the computer turned itself off again. I tried this several times and it would always turn itself off during the splash screen. I then decided to attempt to boot in safe mode. I was able to boot it up and I've disabled all start-up programs that aren't absolutely needed. I am then able to reboot into standard mode and everything works well for several hours, but next thing I know, it is off again. I originally thought it was a power issue and put a brand-new overkill PSU in. I also checked the heat of the CPU and everything else the motherboard diagnostics allow me to check and everything checked out fine. I booted up a thumbdrive with memtest86+ and it ran all night and didn't report any errors. Unfortunately, for some reason the system restore function was disabled (I do not remember doing this) so there was no restore point to attempt.

With all the default devices enabled in bios, random irq/driver irq not less than or equal BSOD's. Disabled on board FDC, still bsods. Disabled onboard LAN, still bsods. Disabled IDE controllers, still BSOD's. I've tried a pcie and pci card, still bsods. Tried SATA 3&4, still BSODs. I replaced my USB keyboard/mouse with an old ps/2 keyboard and mouse, unplugged my usb headset, and it hasn't crashed since.

System Restore Was Disabled - Cant Enable In Safe Mode

Jan 17, 2010

My computer was having a personality disorder so I decided to save all my files from the hard drive and do a system restore back to the original factory settings. I don't have the installation disks anymore and would like to avoid having to order them. When I started the process, the desktop locked up on me. The keyboard wasn't recognized and I couldn't mouse to any programs or functions. It didn't even complete it's startup sequence, and the icons on the right side by the clock never showed up.

So I restarted the computer in safe mode and saved my files. When I tried to do a system restore from safe mode, I got an error stating that system restore was disabled and couldn't be enabled in safe mode. I'd have to restart in normal mode and change the settings. Therein lies the problem: when I start in normal mode the computer locks up immediately, and I can't change the settings

Taking FOREVER To Load And Simple Tasks

Apr 26, 2007

Well just recently my computer has been slowing to a crawl when I do (normally) simple tasks. Usually I can run a spyware scan on top of playing iTunes, working on a Word document and much more with no problems, but today I noticed that suddenly a scan by AVG alone is using nearly 70-80 percent of my processing power . Also Windows has been taking darn near forever to load. More than 2 minutes. I know this can't be normal. I've had this problem before but received almost no replies so please someone help. This is really ruining my computing experience. By the way I have an AMD Athlon X2 4200+. Any guesses as to what the problem might be?

640x480 Forever - Blank Drive In One Of The Other Lenovo Boxes

Jun 10, 2009

Our offices have many Lenovo computers, 2004 vintage, no model name shown anywhere. The original driver disc is long lost, but for all but one of these, Windows XP finds built-in drivers that just work. Here is my chronology for the Bad Box that doesn't just work, there's really no alternative except to put the files that the box wants on the drive. To do this, I put the blank drive in one of the other Lenovo boxes (identical hardware in every way) and used XXClone to make a bootable clone of that other drive, put it back in my Lenovo and it booted fine, video looked great. I noticed that this system had never been updated and was running the original flavor of XP (confirmed in the properties of "My Computer"), so I downloaded Service Pack 2 and installed it.

Computer Takes FOREVER To Boot Up And Then Hangs After Logging In

My Laptop (running XP) will boot up to the login screen (which now takes about 5 minutes when it used to be less than 1 minute). Once I enter my login information and hit enter it stalls for about 5 minutes and then returns to the "ctrl-alt-del login screen".I have 2 "profiles" and can successfully log in to one under the administrator login but I don't get a start button and the windows look "different". For example, the expand/minimize/close buttons when I run the task manager look more like how I remember windows screens looking years ago if that makes any sense.

Trojans In System Or If The Service Pack 2 Responsible?

May 19, 2005

I'm not sure if I have trojans in my system or if the Service Pack 2 is responsible for a bunch of new "services" running in the background of my computer. I've tried searching the internet and have found conflicting reports, so I thought I'd come to the BEST tech source on the net! Now...I've scanned with HJT and I can't see anything suspicious but then again I'm NOT a techie. The services I found that are running on my computer are as follows: C:WINDOWSSystem3 2svchost.exe -k netsvcs (there are about 30 - 40 of these entries on my computer) C:WINDOWSSystem32svchost.exe DcomLaunch (there are 2 of these entries on my computer) C:WINDOWSSystem32svchost.exe -k NetworkService

System Is Running Windows XP With Service Pack 1

Sep 1, 2005

Got a system I'm looking at for someone I know. They have a file extension issue that I'm not familiar with. Here's what it is and what they think they did to get it that way.Currently all but a couple their shortcuts on the desktop have a .lnk extension attached to them. If you try to double click the shortcut to open the program windows tells you that it can't open the file and askes you what program to use. Here's what they were doing when they noticed this problem. They went into Windows Explorer and accessed the "tools" menu. From there they went to "folder options" and selected the "file types" tab. They clicked to create a new file extension, entered "lnk" for the extension and clicked "ok" Then they selected the new extension from the list and clicked the "advanced" option. In the resulting window they unchecked the "confirm open after download" option and clicked "ok". After going through this sequence they noticed that all of their shortcuts had been modified with this extension. Also now if you create a new shortcut it is automatically given this file extension. They tried going back to the folder options and removing the extension but that hasn't helped the problem any. Changing the name of the shortcut back to the original format doesn't help either. The system is currently running Windows XP with service pack 1.
