Computer Takes FOREVER To Boot Up And Then Hangs After Logging In
Jan 11, 2005My Laptop (running XP) will boot up to the login screen (which now takes about 5 minutes when it used to be less than 1 minute). Once I enter my login information and hit enter it stalls for about 5 minutes and then returns to the "ctrl-alt-del login screen".I have 2 "profiles" and can successfully log in to one under the administrator login but I don't get a start button and the windows look "different". For example, the expand/minimize/close buttons when I run the task manager look more like how I remember windows screens looking years ago if that makes any sense.

Aug 26, 2005I'm wondering why all of a sudden it's taking my pc forever to log off. Does this mean I need more memory or is it possible a virus of some sort. I have a free trial of AVG anti=virus installed...but most times the free trials will tell me what might be infecting it but doesnt get rid of them because it's a free trial.

Feb 17, 2006I am running xp home edition sp2, here are some details about my motherboard and memory nd stuff off cpu/z Right now that out of the way the probelm is it takes about 20 seconds to logon to my user account and takes 10 seconds for the tasbar to load! i have canceled down some unused services, cleared my startup programs, run adaware and cleanup stuff etc nd nothing has worked!

I have adjusted the settings from Control Userpasswords2 by unchecking the "users must use a username and password to use this computer" but still am required to click on my name on the logon screen. I've also adjusted the same setting in TweakUI for XP with no help Another issue, which has happened on two different computers is when I attempt to use the Panda Scan my anti-virus warns that it contains a virus and will not let me proceed with the scan.I am using XP Home version, a single user on a non-network computer and I consider myself to be an intermediate user.

Oct 31, 2005Hello all, at the point of exasperation here and am requesting any assistance or insight which can be provided. I Am up to 11 minutes to boot my JetBook laptop with Win XP pro I also have trouble with battlenet.com and commonaccess.com reappearing in the registry and starup, as I understand it these are malicious things too. I have used registry mechanic, trend micro, spyaware, adaware and no adware to try and track these things down, apparently to no avail. There is a message I receive when booting up looking for a registry item which is at least four (4) boxes which makes no sense, how to do a registry search to delete the value?

Apr 11, 2005Last week i turned my computer on and windows xp took so much longer to boot up. when the windows xp loading screen (with the blue progress bar) appears, its there for a few minutes, it used to be a few seconds. I scanned for viruses with Norton, scanned for spyware etc with Ad-Aware and Microsoft's Anti spyware, everything is all clean. All programs are up to date in definitions too. I cleaned my registry(registry mechanic), defragged my drives, done disc cleans, i have 2 programs in my start-up (norton and mcafee firewall) and still no joy. I have also used winxp manager and tried optimizing and xp still takes a long time to load.

I've not added any soft or hardware before this started.Specifically, the Welcome screen stays up for 30 seconds. Then I get a blank desktop and 30 seconds more elapse before the icons appear. Finally, it takes 1:40 before all tray icons are in place so my total boot time is over 2 1/2 minutes.I've reviewed all Start up items in MSConfig and in my Start up folder, and have run a non-destructive restore. I've used Registry First Aid to check on registry content, and, of course, a virus scan (NAV), and have also defragged.

Aug 9, 2007Every time I startup or restart my computer, my load takes around 20mins ! I have a Compaq Presario V2000. When I power or restart, the screen goes black, everything flashes, then the Compaq screen shows for about a second (guessing is the BIOS because it lets me hit F8 or whatever) but then after that it goes to a black screen with a status bar at the bottom. Slowly the status bar fills up. At around 20 minutes, which the bar is half way, then the computer flashes again and the XP logo shows and loads normally afterwards.
Im having no more problems with XP or anything else except that startup screen. People tell me its the BIOS, others tell me its not recognizing the Hard drive fast enough among other things. My BIOS boot order is basically CD first then HD. I have tried so many things with no success. And its getting to the point that I cant do anything when it comes to updating stuff without having to restart, which takes those 20mins.

Nov 27, 2007When I turn on the HP laptop, I see the IVENT logo, then the screen goes dark for 30 minutes, then boots completely to reveal Windows XP. I can use the cd/dvd drive but cannot connect to the internet. There is a warranty, but Best Buy advises there are no hardware issues. They said re-loading Windows would fix the problem. I have performed all the restore and windows trouble shooting start-up fixes and those do not work. However, under device manager, the 1394 adapter "has a problem" and there are yellow ? under Ethernet controller, Multimedia Audio controller, Network Controller, PCI Device, PCI Modem, Video Controller and Video Controller (VGA Compatible)and an exclamation pt under SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller.

Mar 22, 2006A week ago my pc simply stopped responding while running, and before that moment, there was no indication that anything was wrong. CAD did not respond so the pc was turned off manually and rebooted. It would not load at all. After a few attempts I was finally able to get it to come up in safe mode and attempted a chkdsk which found some errors, then ran chkdsk /f and /r and was finally able to boot up the computer, but the process takes literally 15 minutes.
I've been trying the different troubleshooting suggestions I found at: "10 Things You Can Do When Windows XP Won't Boot Up". I tried bootcfg /rebuild but was scared off of that when prompted to answer some questions after the initial command. I also tried fixmbr DeviceHardDisk0 but came to a point that I received a message saying that "an invalid or nonstandard partition table signature was detected. If you are not having problems accessing your drives, you should not continue. Writing a new master boot record to your system partition could damage your partition tables and cause your partitions to become inaccessible" which also scared me off so I didn't continue.........
Infinite Logon Loop / Immediatley Logs Off To The Logon Screen
Sep 22, 2004My computer starts up normally.It always just autologs on since I'm the only one using my windows xp computer. However, before anything can be displayed it immediatley logs off to the logon screen. I click my username and start the login process (i have no password and before even switching to my wallpaper or anything it says stuff like logging out and saving your settings.
I tried booting in safe mode too and the same infinite logon loop occured to, even with the default administrator account. The last thing I remember doing before this happened is I was playing City of Heroes when it crashed forcing me to restart my computer. This happens occasionally in certain programs but I've never had anything like this happen before. I tried unplugging my keyboard, mouse, usb devices, ethernet cable, no luck. Intel Pentium 4 1.7 ghz Geforce 5600 FX 256 mb windows xp home service pack 1, in case any of that matters

Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook Takes Many Time To Boot Up
Apr 24, 2007My Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook w/ 512 MB Ram running XP sometimes takes up to 15 minutes to begin booting up. For 15 minutes there will be a blinking cursor in the top corner before I see the typical "Dell" then "Microsoft" bootup signs. I ran Adaware and Spybot and Antivirus and this seemed to solve the problem temporarily. Now the problem comes and goes. The computer still has Mcafee that was pre-installed, but with no paid subscription. And Mcafee still sends the "update" popups, even after I though I've disabled them. Could the Mcafee be causing the problems?

Jul 15, 2005I've seen another post somewhere and someone else had this problem, but I haven't found a solution. We're using WXP Pro, SP2. After doing a repair install (the other person just had it after using Windows Update), at logon, after entering the correct, AND VALID, password either for a user Or the Administrator, Windows Logon displays the following Logon Message in a box: "!The system cannot log you on due to the following error: "The program issued a command but the command length is incorrect. "Please try again or consult your administrator."
No matter how many times logon is attempted, or with what account, the message continues to be issued. Thus, NO ONE can logon to the GUI. The Recovery Console can be used to logon as Administrator, but no password is requested even though there is one in place. I've searched the MSKB but didn't find any reference. Implementing "Last known good configuration" does not fix the problem.

I mean once a month, I run CCleaner to clean my temporary file so my computer won't be so slow, but is that information still there? and is there a way to clean it for I could gain more speed?

Apr 26, 2007Well just recently my computer has been slowing to a crawl when I do (normally) simple tasks. Usually I can run a spyware scan on top of playing iTunes, working on a Word document and much more with no problems, but today I noticed that suddenly a scan by AVG alone is using nearly 70-80 percent of my processing power . Also Windows has been taking darn near forever to load. More than 2 minutes. I know this can't be normal. I've had this problem before but received almost no replies so please someone help. This is really ruining my computing experience. By the way I have an AMD Athlon X2 4200+. Any guesses as to what the problem might be?

Mar 22, 2008The thread title sums it up real nice, but for a sake of offering this giant textfield some reasonable use, I can wax a bit about hows and whys. I disabled some services to speed up my system. Not that it would need it, or that I would notice it. Why do I need a spooler service if I don't even own a printer? I guess I got carried away, and on the next restart the login took MUCH longer than before.Then I noticed that the internet pages were loading much more slowly, though their response times and download speed remained the same. And that's my biggest issue at the moment.

Jun 10, 2009Our offices have many Lenovo computers, 2004 vintage, no model name shown anywhere. The original driver disc is long lost, but for all but one of these, Windows XP finds built-in drivers that just work. Here is my chronology for the Bad Box that doesn't just work, there's really no alternative except to put the files that the box wants on the drive. To do this, I put the blank drive in one of the other Lenovo boxes (identical hardware in every way) and used XXClone to make a bootable clone of that other drive, put it back in my Lenovo and it booted fine, video looked great. I noticed that this system had never been updated and was running the original flavor of XP (confirmed in the properties of "My Computer"), so I downloaded Service Pack 2 and installed it.
