Well just recently my computer has been slowing to a crawl when I do (normally) simple tasks. Usually I can run a spyware scan on top of playing iTunes, working on a Word document and much more with no problems, but today I noticed that suddenly a scan by AVG alone is using nearly 70-80 percent of my processing power . Also Windows has been taking darn near forever to load. More than 2 minutes. I know this can't be normal. I've had this problem before but received almost no replies so please someone help. This is really ruining my computing experience. By the way I have an AMD Athlon X2 4200+. Any guesses as to what the problem might be?

We are having some minor problems with a system at work. I was wondering if someone knowledgable about these logs would take a look at it, and see if anything stands out, or needs fixed.

Okay, so I had installed IE 7 Beta, but then I went back to 6. I used the Change Icon feature to put the desktop icon back to the 6 style, because ironically I like it better. But when I download something or IE opens a seperate window, the bar still has the IE 7 icon. For some reason, this BUGS ME to no end. How do I get all of IE's icons back permanently to the 6 look?

My latest reformat of XP Home SP2 and loading of all my programs (Word was installed through MS Works 6.0) and all latest updates has somehow caused the clock to now show the day of the week in the taskbar, under the clock. Have tried reducing size of the Task Bar -- have checked customize under TaskBar settings, but it doesn't include anything obviously jumping out at me and saying "day of week".

I have Win XP Media Center 2005 and have added my Outlook Express to the Start Programs Folder. However, when booting up, it attempts to open OE before opening my Wireless Network Connection and naturally, it can't do the OE Send & Receive when opening. Is there any way to regulate what order programs in the Start Programs are opened, i.e., to open the Wireless Network Connection first?

I read somewhere that "Every keystroke, every click.... in fact everything you do on your PC is being stored right this minute, slowing your PC down to a crawl and keeping your vital information up for grabs?", but is it true? I mean once a month, I run CCleaner to clean my temporary file so my computer won't be so slow, but is that information still there? and is there a way to clean it for I could gain more speed?

I'm wondering why all of a sudden it's taking my pc forever to log off. Does this mean I need more memory or is it possible a virus of some sort. I have a free trial of AVG anti=virus installed...but most times the free trials will tell me what might be infecting it but doesnt get rid of them because it's a free trial.

The thread title sums it up real nice, but for a sake of offering this giant textfield some reasonable use, I can wax a bit about hows and whys. I disabled some services to speed up my system. Not that it would need it, or that I would notice it. Why do I need a spooler service if I don't even own a printer? I guess I got carried away, and on the next restart the login took MUCH longer than before. Then I noticed that the internet pages were loading much more slowly, though their response times and download speed remained the same. And that's my biggest issue at the moment.

Our offices have many Lenovo computers, 2004 vintage, no model name shown anywhere. The original driver disc is long lost, but for all but one of these, Windows XP finds built-in drivers that just work. Here is my chronology for the Bad Box that doesn't just work, there's really no alternative except to put the files that the box wants on the drive. To do this, I put the blank drive in one of the other Lenovo boxes (identical hardware in every way) and used XXClone to make a bootable clone of that other drive, put it back in my Lenovo and it booted fine, video looked great. I noticed that this system had never been updated and was running the original flavor of XP (confirmed in the properties of "My Computer"), so I downloaded Service Pack 2 and installed it.

My Laptop (running XP) will boot up to the login screen (which now takes about 5 minutes when it used to be less than 1 minute). Once I enter my login information and hit enter it stalls for about 5 minutes and then returns to the "ctrl-alt-del login screen".I have 2 "profiles" and can successfully log in to one under the administrator login but I don't get a start button and the windows look "different". For example, the expand/minimize/close buttons when I run the task manager look more like how I remember windows screens looking years ago if that makes any sense.

I was trying to defrag my aunt's comuter witht the Windows (xp home) built in defragger. I got an error message that said to run scan disk or chkdsk.
While I'm familiar with scan disk, I know it's not an option on xp. So I went to "start", "run", and typed in chkdsk and hit ok...up pops a dos window and it says something to the fact of : "f parameter not specified. running chkdsk in read only mode", and then it does a quick run and nothing happens. I still can't defrag. How do I run chkdsk.

I keep getting and error message Windows - Corrupt File - The file or directory C:|$MFT is corrupt and unreadable. Please run Chkdsk utility. I have run the utility many times and get nothing but verification of files. I can't turn on either /f or /r. which would hopefully correct the problem. I am using Windows XP Home.

To bring you up to date here is what I said last time
MY ORIGINAL POST
I am running Win XP SP2.
The last 3 times I turned on the computer it put itself through CHKDSK.
Each time finding loads of problems with $130 also loads of orphaned files.
What is going on? How do I fix it?
Ray
HERE IS THE ADVICE I RECEIVED
Go to
All Programs>Accessories>Command prompt and type
chkdsk /r (there is a space before /)
Enter
Reboot and it will run
NOW
I followed the advice and it all worked perfectly for the next 2 times that I turned on my computer. This morning I turned on and it was back to going through CHKDSK again.
I have up to date AVG anti virus.
I ran a full system check. Nothing found.
I have up to date Spybot.
I ran a full system check. Nothing found.
I hace Comodo Firewall. Up to date
I ran Registry Mechanic.
What else can I do?

I am using an IBM Thinkpad R40 that runs XP. It was running extremely slow, so I asked someone for some ideas. The first thing they told me to do was run a CHKDSK. (start run ect.) and walked me through the scheduling process. Well, when I rebooted, it took 4 plus hours, to tell me an error had occured and I am stuck looking at a blue screen. If I let it sit long enough, it repeats the process. I have attempted to cancel the check, but again it freezes on the blue screen. I have attempted to start it in safe-mode with the same result. How do I get to windows?

I had something happen to my computer after I did a CHKDSK /f /r. When I went to use excel, and clicked on my tab key, the cursor went backwards. Then I tried to select a file and it would not let me select one file, it hi-lighted all the files. I finally closed out excel and tried to restore my computer to an earlier time thinking I got a virus. I did not open any e-mails that day, and it was running ok the night before. The restore froze and would not work. I just shut down my computer at the master switch and re-booted. Everything was ok after that. Excel worked fine, and all was good. I ran my AVG virus program to check for a virus, it found nothing. I thought it was a coincidence that this happened after the CHKDSK /f /r parms. Does anyone know what happened? The reason I did a CHKDSK /f /r was my Perfect Disk program did not defrag completely and the vendor told me to do this to do an offline defrag. I tried an offline defrag before, but I got errors on my drive and could not do it, thats why they told me to use the CHHDSK /f /r. Also, is there anyway that I can put something in my restore to not let ANY virus come in so I can restore in case I got a virus? I use xp professional

I recently had a virus and have an error of "Unmountable Boot Volume" when starting my computer. I googled it and found out that if I type in "Chkdsk /r" Into the recovery console it will fix it. But I was unable to find out whether chkdsk /r effects any of my files on the computer. Will this delete them or keep them untouched? Or is there any other way to fix my problem without losing my files?
