Taking FOREVER To Load And Simple Tasks

Apr 26, 2007

Well just recently my computer has been slowing to a crawl when I do (normally) simple tasks. Usually I can run a spyware scan on top of playing iTunes, working on a Word document and much more with no problems, but today I noticed that suddenly a scan by AVG alone is using nearly 70-80 percent of my processing power . Also Windows has been taking darn near forever to load. More than 2 minutes. I know this can't be normal. I've had this problem before but received almost no replies so please someone help. This is really ruining my computing experience. By the way I have an AMD Athlon X2 4200+. Any guesses as to what the problem might be?

Folders Taking Too Long To Load?

Apr 26, 2008

Certain folders on my computer take forever to load after awhile. I've noticed that these are usually folders with a lot of files in them.At first, I thought it was just my external hard drives which were acting up due to it being USB, however, I found out the other night that my program file folder on the C:/ drive took a long time to load, as well.Even if I turn the external hard drive off, cool it off, then turn it back on, those particular folders will still take awhile to load.I've also noticed that if one folder lags, then the others will lag around the same time.

Opening Web Pages Taking Long Time To Load?

Apr 1, 2007

I believe I have a virus but I can't seem to find information about it. I am unable to clear it up when I run virus checks either. What's happening is this. When ever I open a web page (aol is my home page with ie as my brower) the page takes forever to load and then just after it does load I get a message saying "We're sorry, the content you requested is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later." My computer is also EXTREMELY slow to load pages - pages that use to load within 5 seconds (like when checking email) can take 5 minutes to open, if it opens at all.

My system uses Intel 810 Motherboard and Penitum -3, 800MHZ processor. I have Windows XP Professional installed. My problem is that the system has slowed down very much. It takes a very long time to even load the interface fully. Most of the programs in Startup (MSConfig)also do not load. I have recently installed Norton 2005. I have scanned the system for Trojans, viruses, SpywareAdware etc. But nothing shows up. Is it because of NAV?? MSConfig/Startup also does not have any unknown entries.

Firefox Taking An Unusually Long Time To Load Pages

Mar 14, 2010

I tend to have problems with Firefox taking an unusually long time to load pages, and normally, I can solve that with using a System Restore. This time, though, I can't get System Restore to work. I've tried several times from various checkpoints, but each time I get a message saying "Incomplete Restoration." I know this topic has been posted before, and I tried using the advice given in this thread I disabled AVG Anti-Virus, but I didn't help. I know from the previous thread that you'll need to look at the system restore logs in order to help; so, I'll just post those now to save time.

Get New Drivers In Simple Terms

Dec 9, 2006

I know what drivers are, in principle, in simple terms. But not in detail.I've read about reinstalling XP, cuz I have considered that I may have to reformat and do that. I know about making sure first that I can boot from my CD first, and so forth. But I don't know what I'd do to make sure I have all the right drivers. How do I find out which ones I need? Do I need one "correct" one per device on my computer? I.e., one for the CD-RW, one for the monitor, one for my printer, one for my mouse, and so forth?

Disabled A System Service Now Some Things Take Forever

Mar 22, 2008

The thread title sums it up real nice, but for a sake of offering this giant textfield some reasonable use, I can wax a bit about hows and whys. I disabled some services to speed up my system. Not that it would need it, or that I would notice it. Why do I need a spooler service if I don't even own a printer? I guess I got carried away, and on the next restart the login took MUCH longer than before. Then I noticed that the internet pages were loading much more slowly, though their response times and download speed remained the same. And that's my biggest issue at the moment.

640x480 Forever - Blank Drive In One Of The Other Lenovo Boxes

Jun 10, 2009

Our offices have many Lenovo computers, 2004 vintage, no model name shown anywhere. The original driver disc is long lost, but for all but one of these, Windows XP finds built-in drivers that just work. Here is my chronology for the Bad Box that doesn't just work, there's really no alternative except to put the files that the box wants on the drive. To do this, I put the blank drive in one of the other Lenovo boxes (identical hardware in every way) and used XXClone to make a bootable clone of that other drive, put it back in my Lenovo and it booted fine, video looked great. I noticed that this system had never been updated and was running the original flavor of XP (confirmed in the properties of "My Computer"), so I downloaded Service Pack 2 and installed it.

For example, the expand/minimize/close buttons when I run the task manager look more like how I remember windows screens looking years ago if that makes any sense.

Configure For ONE User / Administrator Just A Simple Boot-up Without Password

Mar 16, 2006

I suppose the title of this post could be something like, "Why can't XP be more like Win98?"But seriously: I have in front of me a File View of My Computer. In Documents and Settings, it shows me that there are apparently four accounts: Administrator, All Users, Default User, and me In each one of these there is, in differing combinations, things like My Documents,My Music, Favorites.. And, in some there are what appear to be administrative privileges (Local Settings). The confusion this is causing while transferring documents and files from the old machine is getting up my nose! (This is a piecemeal exercise as the old PC is still working as the office - word processing, spreadsheets, etc.)

Simple Boot CDUSB That Runs Batch File

Jun 13, 2008

So I have a few SP3 machine that give the lovely gdi32.dll blue screen on boot. I can solve it by booting an XP disk and going into recovery mode to copy a new gdi32.dll over the old one, but I was thinking since I am going to be seeing alot of SP3 updates, and a good deal have errored out already, it'd be cool to automate the fix just a little to save some time. Time adds up when you have to let the Windows CD boot up, and then type out the file paths for copying the file, etc.Is there a way to run a batch file from a bootable CD or USB drive? I want to boot up, run the bat, restart. Seems like it'd be a very fast and very easy solution. I just don't know how to do that.

PCI Simple Communications Controller - Basic Text Editing

May 27, 2008

I recently underwent a clean install of both Win2k Pro & WinXP Pro. In both instances, the DM is reporting that the 'Multimedia Audio Controller' and the 'PCI Simple Communications Controller' are not correctly recognized (drivers not installed).I've done some searching online and many people suggest that a dial-up modem is the culprit behind the messages. In fact, there isn't a dial-up modem installed in my system, only a 10/100 NIC which works fine with both Windows native driver and the maker's driver.I've also searched for the PCI commun. control. drivers online to find that I have nothing to download. I'm not entirely sure what this controller does, although I can most likely find the multimedia audio controller. It's worth noting that XP is acting flakey sometimes when I use explorer to navigate around directories, and that I was recently unable to install Sisoft's SANDRA diagnostics app. Otherwise, the system seems to be stable enough to use online and for basic text editing.

Trying To Load Windows Xp / Load Set Up / Going To Load Files It Locked Up

Apr 12, 2006

First my computer was cutting off in the middle of any program. I decided to delete everything on the drive and reformat it and reload windows xp. While trying to load windows xp it would load the set up but when going to load files it locked up everytime. I tried also loading windows 98, 95 and they too locked up. At one point it said I had a virus in my boot sector and at another time it said I had a virus in my RAM. I got a program called PC Beginner to help partition my drive and redo the MBR. I can partition the drive and format it but windows still doesn't load. Now I wonder if there is a problem with the mother board and I have a dual bios board, I was wonder if there is a program loaded in the dual bios that may somehow causing my problem. If so what can be done to clear the problem? How can I get windows reloaded?
