Jan 28, 2007I'm trying to create a simple desktop cleanup batch file. What I want to do is to take every file located on my desktop except for a few shortcuts and move them to a certain directory.

Simple Boot CDUSB That Runs Batch File
Jun 13, 2008So I have a few SP3 machine that give the lovely gdi32.dll blue screen on boot. I can solve it by booting an XP disk and going into recovery mode to copy a new gdi32.dll over the old one, but I was thinking since I am going to be seeing alot of SP3 updates, and a good deal have errored out already, it'd be cool to automate the fix just a little to save some time. Time adds up when you have to let the Windows CD boot up, and then type out the file paths for copying the file, etc.Is there a way to run a batch file from a bootable CD or USB drive? I want to boot up, run the bat, restart. Seems like it'd be a very fast and very easy solution. I just don't know how to do that.

Jan 1, 2005Several unwanted desktop icons appeared recently (I think they come via Search2000 when IE is used). They won't right-click for deletion, nor will they allow themselves to be drop-dragged to the recycle bin. They don't appear in the desktop icon list when using the desktop cleanup feature.

Copy Files Via Batch File
Jan 1, 2009I'm running Win XP Pro SP 3, I have a file that I periodically copy to several different computers on a LAN. The exact destinations of the file change occasionally and I want to minimize the amount of maintenance involved when there is a change.
In the folder containing the file I have a shortcut to each of the destination drives. When one of the destination folders changes I update the shortcut in that folder.
If I drag the file to each of the shortcuts using the right mouse button one of the options is to copy the file to the target of the shortcut, so one way to copy the file is to manually drag it to each shortcut. Is it possible to achieve similar functionality with a batch file? It is easy enough to write a batch file that copies the files to each destination by coding the destinations into the batch file but is it possible to use a batch file to copy the file to the target of each shortcut? I suspect that parsing the .lnk files is complex but I don't know if there is another way to do this.

The script runs properly but the only problem is that, it'll prompt for "i386" folder originally in Windows XP cd. I've copied the whole folder to one of our network drive and was wondering is there any commands that could be added to the script above so that it won't prompt for the "i386" folder location so that no user interaction is required?

Jul 10, 2005I recently sent my computer for repair due to virus-related problems. Anyway, the repair person had to reinstall Win XP(Home) from scratch and told me that he had partitioned the drive (and without my permission!) in two: DBackup and CSystem (Backup consists of the files from the previous system). I notice that there is a duplication of files due to this partition. For example, song A would appear twice on Win Media PlayerCDocumentsandSettings/Owner/My Documents/MyMusic/SongA AND Dmydocbackup/MyMusic/SongA). I don't know if there are any duplication of other files yet. Plus, I realised during Disk Cleanup that the system's Temporary Internet Files is located in 'Backup drive' instead of 'System'. Shouldn't this folder be in the other drive i.e. system drive, since Backup is just,well, backup(of the old drive). The WINDOWS folder also appears in both drives.
I've never had partitioned drives so this is causing major headaches for me. If there is a need for me to un-partition my drives to clear the mess, can I do it without re-installing the whole system from the Cd? Sorry it's a long one How many times can you reinstall from the Cd before it cannot be used anymore (I hear there is a limit)
