System Unstable - BSODs - Disabled IDE Controllers
Oct 14, 2006
I've had this ax8 board for some time. Previously, I'd been using an av8. Here's a run down of what I've experienced. With all the default devices enabled in bios, random irq/driver irq not less than or equal BSOD's. Disabled on board FDC, still bsods. Disabled onboard LAN, still bsods. Disabled IDE controllers, still BSOD's. I've tried a pcie and pci card, still bsods. Tried SATA 3&4, still BSODs. I replaced my USB keyboard/mouse with an old ps/2 keyboard and mouse, unplugged my usb headset, and it hasn't crashed since.
I am getting random crashes, lock-ups, reboots, you name it. I have had to type this message on wordpad rather than in IE because it will freeze up within seconds. (This site is worse than others for some reason). I recently done a fresh install on my machine so there is very little on it. I have a 160gb sata drive and on 100gb of it I have windows xp sp2 installed and the remaining I have xp sp1 installed so I can switch between the two.
Recently my OS XP Pro has been acting a little strange, when I start it up a installer has been popping up trying to install a fax, which I do cancel before it can install. Also I tried using System Restore and the restore process starts and gets about 1/3 of the way on the progress bar and restarts my PC and says “your system can not be restored”. I have went to Microsoft knowledge base of known problems w/SR and have tried all the different scenarios and get the same result each time. I have a feeling that I have been hijacked. I am including scans from MalewareBytes and Hijack This.
(1) my desktop configuration is ASUS motherboard P5KPL AM/PS, with pentium (R) dual core CPU 2.7 GHz, 320 GB hard disk, 1 GB DDR2 RAM and NVIDIA getForce 8400 GS. My question is when i tried putting a single 2 GB RAM, it was showing error and the system became unstable. What could be the reason?
Hello there after lots of previous problem with my pc. I have formated my PC and though running ok whenever i access Security Centre or the Control Panel neither will respond. Please help. H Here is the Hijack this log file....
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 14:56:23, on 01/09/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)
os keeps getting error messages such as system is unstable and it is crashing on a regular basis when he goes on the internet. he doesnt update his windows on a regular basis and he does not have very good antivirus protection, so i have unplugged his modem for the time being to stop him getting into more trouble. he has reformatted his drive twice in the last 2 weeks so i want to install avg antivirus, spywareblaster, spybot, and the latest version of ad-aware(as he only has an older version) before he plugs his modem back in, then update every thing, and run scans using the programs listed above. am i doing the right thing? and how do i go about wiping his hard drive so i can re-install his windows.
I've never, EVER, in my whole life experienced any kind of BSOD in XP(sounds crazy I know), but lately I've got 4 of them in the last 2 weeks. So naturaly, I'm really iritated right about now.The first one was caused by tdi.sys and after lots of googling, I downloaded the debugging tool and opened my first ever minidump. Again after a lot of googling, on one forum it was advised that I change the tdi.sys located in::WINDOWSsystem32driverswith the one from:C:WINDOWSServicePackFilesi386 I did and that BSOD didn't happen again. I was soooo happy.
I've been having this problem for half a year now, and I've tried everything I could think of (as an advanced user) to fix it myself, without success. I have kept a log of all errors that I have received and of all solutions that I have attempted, so please bear with me as I try to describe all the relevant details, in the hope that someone will be able to help me fix it.
Ever since I bought my laptop (Acer Aspire 5930G), I have been getting blue screens (BSODs) that seem to be linked with the Intel wireless network adapter that came pre-installed in it. Whenever the WiFi is turned on from the button on the front of the laptop, a BSOD will appear at a random point in time (usually, between a few minutes and a few days after it has been switched on), regardless of whether I am actually connected to a WLAN network or not. On average, I get a BSOD every other day or so. If the WiFi is turned off from the button, then no BSOD ever appears.
The error codes that the BSODs indicate vary, these are just some of what I have received: - 0x0000007f (0x00000008, 0xbab30d70, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) - 0x0000007f (0x00000008, 0xb8330d70, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) - 0x0000007f (0x00000008, 0x80042000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) - 0x100000d1 (0xa483a671, 0x00000002, 0x00000008, 0xa483a671)
After analysing some of the minidumps generated by the BSODs with WinDbg, the following files were indicated as possible culprits, all of them having to do with Internet connectivity (Intel driver of firewall): - NETw5x32.sys - fwdrv.sys - NDIS.sys....
I left my pc at my apartment on a thursday, came home the following monday, went to turn it on, and , nothing. Blank screen. I cleared cmos, still, nothing. I then tried my psu on another motherboard I had lying around to see if it was working, and, it wasn't. So, my psu went dead in the 4 days that I hadn't used my computer. I then plugged in my old spare whisper series 460W psu(ATX 1.0 i think) and got the system to boot up. Upon loading windows i was greeted with "windows did not properly load last time". So, someone turned on my computer, probably my roomates, and in doing so, they killed my psu.
I didn't mind too much..as I can just rma the psu, and hope nothing else was wrong with it. So, after using my pc for about 10 minutes, i get a bsod. I shrug it off, use it more, 2 hours go by, bsod. A different one. I used the pc for another day, and still more, random bsods. I decided i'd try my older hard drives, as they still had a copy of windows loaded on them, configured to my pc. They experienced the same behavior, bsods, random, and never at the same time. Regarldess of the operation, i could be idling, playing a game, whatever. I know my ram is ok, i ran memtest for 9.5 hours, and it completed 26 loops, all passes. I am curious if my power supply is just old, and is having issues in some manner. I can't test this theory until my new psu arrives.
What i did test last night, was removing my wireless adapter. After removing it, i booted the pc, ran 3dmark2003, 2005, prime95, the 3d programs for an hour combined, and prime95 for 1.5 hours. All the while i was running one instance of folding@home in the background. It only had one hiccup, when 3dmark2003 was first ran, i closed with an unexpected error. The pc didn't restart once, no bsod's, i even left it on overnight, and when i woke up, it hadn't restarted.
I also found a combination of programs that causes a blue screen. If i have xfire open, and i'm in a voice chat, and I play an online game, the pc will show a blue screen and restart. I can play games fine, indefinitely it seems, and i don't get a blue screen, but when I use my usb headset and a game, it crashes. The last time this happened, the bsod showed "driver irq not less than or equal", with a code of 0x000000D1, and suggesting tcpip.sys is the culprit, upon restarting and logging in, as the system was loading drivers/startup programs, i ran into the same error, only it listed ntfs.sys...at least i think that was the file. Regardless, I think i'm having an irq issue. Can i have a driver irq problem? and how to i fix it.i've only got two pci slots, and i've tried using both.
Been experiencing blue screens of death rather frequently these days.. Here's the most recent STOP code since the blue screen didn't mention anything specific about a driver.
My wife's computer is running XP Pro with all the latest updates and every malware/spyware/trojan checker I've run reports no infections, neither does AVG 9.0. I say this first as a background. The problem was first found when the computer was found off when it was last known to be on. Upon turning on the computer, as the Windows splash screen was displayed, the computer turned itself off again. I tried this several times and it would always turn itself off during the splash screen. I then decided to attempt to boot in safe mode. I was able to boot it up and I've disabled all start-up programs that aren't absolutely needed. I am then able to reboot into standard mode and everything works well for several hours, but next thing I know, it is off again. I originally thought it was a power issue and put a brand-new overkill PSU in. I also checked the heat of the CPU and everything else the motherboard diagnostics allow me to check and everything checked out fine. I booted up a thumbdrive with memtest86+ and it ran all night and didn't report any errors. Unfortunately, for some reason the system restore function was disabled (I do not remember doing this) so there was no restore point to attempt.
Within the past 2 or 3 days, I've been getting BSODs 3 times a day. They seem to always happen when I'm randomly surfing on Firefox, but I thought this belonged here. They seem to happen after I've recovered the computer from standby mode (I make it go to sleep instead of shutting down and rebooting most of the time) and am surfing firefox. I've noticed that I can do all I want with no problems before sending the computer into standby, but after standby I'm on borrowed time. Maybe I'm forgetting a time that it has shut down on me after a fresh boot, but that seems true.
The thread title sums it up real nice, but for a sake of offering this giant textfield some reasonable use, I can wax a bit about hows and whys. I disabled some services to speed up my system. Not that it would need it, or that I would notice it. Why do I need a spooler service if I don't even own a printer? I guess I got carried away, and on the next restart the login took MUCH longer than before. Then I noticed that the internet pages were loading much more slowly, though their response times and download speed remained the same. And that's my biggest issue at the moment.
My computer was having a personality disorder so I decided to save all my files from the hard drive and do a system restore back to the original factory settings. I don't have the installation disks anymore and would like to avoid having to order them. When I started the process, the desktop locked up on me. The keyboard wasn't recognized and I couldn't mouse to any programs or functions. It didn't even complete it's startup sequence, and the icons on the right side by the clock never showed up.
So I restarted the computer in safe mode and saved my files. When I tried to do a system restore from safe mode, I got an error stating that system restore was disabled and couldn't be enabled in safe mode. I'd have to restart in normal mode and change the settings. Therein lies the problem: when I start in normal mode the computer locks up immediately, and I can't change the settings
I am using Windows XP in a corporate workstation where I have been given the local system administrator rights and I am not in any kind of domain or workgroup. But my problem is the USB ports are disabled and I wanted to enable them.
I have an Acer Travelmate 2702wlmi laptop that Blue screens at the xp loading screen on boot. It flashes up the BSOD so fast you cant see the error code generated. I have rebuilt the laptop onto a new HDD, swapped the memory out and i still dont know if it's software or hardware causing it ( suspect hardware). After the BSOD, the laptop reboots and just goes round in an endless circle. If i power it down and then up again i get the ntldr is missing message and can use a boot disc to get back i to it fine. Last night i used it for hours fine, and rebooted it several times, but early today turning it on caused all the issues again. If i leave the battery out and run it off mains it makes no difference, checked the fans are running and it does not appear to be hot.
i was following someones guide to remove some viruses, in this proccess i turned off system restore and went into safe mode, but instead of normal safe mode minimal i went into safe mode minimal (alternate shell) which i am now stuck in, i have tried a system restore command which wont work because i'm in safe mode
I am running XP Pro with IE8, there is a problem when I attempt to copy and paste, I can put the pointer on where I want to start highlighting and it will not follow the movement of the mouse when attempting to highlight. You can put the pointer on a sentence and hold the mouse while sliding and it will not highlight, or it may start highlighting somewhere in the middle or maybe not at all. I have tried from bottom up and top down, it makes no difference, this is driving me crazy because I use the copy and paste feature quite often. I've never had this happen before, something appears to be conflicting; but I've been running the same programs for a long period of time and never seen this before.
i have noticed when you Ctrl-Alt-Del my cpu usage goes from 10% to 90% every 30 secs or so and will not stop a steady line up and down no matter what i am doing i could even be setting idle and still persist
i've recently connected to the internet via broadband, so purchased Norton Internet Security 2008. When trying to install that I was informed I needed to update Windows to XP Service pack 2. (the pc is at least 5 years old, purchased by my wife before we married). I tried this, but eventually a message came up - "Did not install - system unstable". So I did what it said and Uninstalled. But now I'd be very grateful for any advice, ie what does this mean, how can I get the system to be "stable" and thefore install SP2 and therefore Norton Security. In the meantime I'm worried about going on line ( I am sending this from a library) due to being exposed to viruses, spyware etc. A message has already come up about having spyware (but I think this was removed after downloading anti-spyware from yahoo).
My PC recently started to really slow down. I realized I had also recently had to re-install a DVD drive after it just disappeared and that I might have an IDE issue.I uninstalled all the controllers as recommended on a separate thread. There were 3 Primary and 3 Secondary despite the fact I only have 2 Hard drives and 2 DVD drives. This did the trick and my PC is now booting like it used to but I'm concerned that it still thinks I have 3 of each IDE controller. Surely I should have 2 of each. Does this sound right? I'm concerned that the problem will re-occur if I don't properly fix it. I've had problems with DVD drives disappearing before, though not for a while.
Frequently am working and then get the "blue screen" filled with "if this is the first time you've gotten this screen. maybe virus, I don't think I have virus issues since I just repartitioned my whole HD and just loaded up a new copy of Windows XPSP2. Still I get this screen frequently. I also get iE6 wanting to shut down periodically (it says it's sorry........) and that is real frustrating.......plus it struggles with add-ons....maybe I should reinstall IE6.All this coupled with my inability to take up my NAV2004 program makes for a fun day. Compag not that old and as I say new XP.
I have received this message from PC-Cillin "detected unstable behavior in the network, hardware, operating system, or another app. and automatically reverted to it's last know configuration ". I have also received a low memory message. This is a brand new system I built with a good MSI board , i gig of Kingston mem. After the PC-Cillin message and reboot It is running stable. When it wasn't you could not do any thing especially online with numerous pages open up. Very strange behavior. I am running Sunbelts Counterspy which is a very good anti spyware program and running the XP Firewall. This seems to be a program draining the PC and not spyware because very little surfing was done. I will uninstall Counterspy to see if there is a memory leak.
I'm using an IBM NetVista, Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.80GHz and one night, powers went out. And when I turned my PC on, USB ports aren't working. To my surprise, at the device manager, USB section was gone. It was undetected, or w/e.
I have an Intel 865 board and XP running. The board has 4 USB controllers and hubs. If I want to connect USB2.0 capable devices, do I have to update all 4 controllers drivers, or just one?
I'm having lots of troubles with USB 2.0 support. My mother board is a ASUS P5GD2 Premium, which only has USB 2.0 ports but my Windows XP SP2 keeps popping up this error! I have some drivers, but they don't install because XP SP2 should already support USB 2.0. Maybe the cables that connect the USB ports are the problem.
I had a Thrustmaster Dual Power 4 game pad, and bought a Logitech Rumblepad later. I like the Rumblepad better, and want to consider it my "first string" controller. But if I go into say, Nba Live 2005, and go to choose controllers, no matter what I do, the thrustmaster is on the top of the list, and the logitech is on the bottom. All the old posts talk about choosing Preferred device in the control panel. By running DxDiag, I can see that setting something as the Preferred Device assigns it Controller ID 0. But I also see that the order of the Controllers, as recognized by most games, is the same as the order listed in the game controller control panel, and is completely unrelated to which device is "controller id 0" and "preferred device." For example, I set the logitech as preferred device, and plugged in the thrustmaster and also a gamepad pro.
Am having a problem with Display Properties in WinXP-2. During the first 5 minutes after boot-up, screen resolution on my desk top is unstable with icon and window sizes changing from large to small and vice-versa. Resetting the Display Properties during this time has no effect. When the system warms up the problem is gone. Can the Monitor itself be the problem, or is it most likely the Video Card? I don't have another monitor to use as a test unit.
I have an external hard drive that was working fine on my USB port but at some point my Dell Laptop with Windows XP stopped reognizing it. I tried the external hard drive in another XP desktop and it works fine. I have a USB mouse that worked fine so the port was OK. I tried reinstalling the external hard drive several times and tried to use another external hard drive that I verified worked on another computer but that also would not install. I broused your forum and tried the registry patch.
