Changed System Language - System Wont Starts Now
Aug 24, 2005
I bought a new laptop about 2 weeks ago. It's a Compaq Presario (? if that helps). my grilfriend is Swedish so wanted the language in Swedish. No problem. But the computer keeps restarting a few times a day without any notice. I had a look everywhere on every forum (almost) and read about this Zotob worm that turns your comp off all the time. So, from the microsoft web page i did the PC check thing, and it says it found nothing, but i downloaded the patch or something just in case, and it said it won't install because the language is in Swedish, and i only works in English. So firstly, do i have the worm thing?

I recently have purchased a new pc for gaming. I live in the Netherlands and my windows xp pro came in Dutch. Now I would prefer to have it in english. I look on the microsoft site and there were language interface packages. I tried one for german and afrikaans and they work fine. The english one however is not there, it takes me to a readme html file for some reason.

I turned my pc on today which runs on Windows XP Pro. Every time the computer starts I get four or five options Safe Mode, Safe mode with Prompt, Last well know configuration, etc (most ppl know what I mean here.)
Every time I click on any of the modes my computer restarts. Just before the pc restarts I see a blue screen quickly flash (i know this is know as the 'blue screen of death'.)
I have put in my XP cd but i cant get it to run so i use recovery not even when I run it from my BIOS Screen

You see the problem is that when I start up my computer to Windows XP i recieve an error before the boot screen appears stating:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:<Windows root>system32hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file."This is not my first site i visited to try to find a solution. I have been to many explaining all different types of solutions. Luckly I am a pretty experienced computer person and also a technician, so I have a fighting chance to try to restore my pc to the proper condition.

Every time I start up my computer and goes to the desktop, there are no icons, toolbars, or even the "Start" button, it only shows the desktop background, and all I can use is the Task Manager to access a couple of programs. I tried using Norton Antivirus, but did not find anything, so I uninstalled it. My "CPU Usage" is at 0 and 1% almost dead, I saw that the explorer.exe is missing. I ran it with the Task Manager, and it made the computer reboot the wrong way. When it did, it did not go to the desktop it just showed black screen with the little "-" on the top left and couldn't do anything and the buffer is barely doing anything, you know, when you open a program, the light flashes rapidly and making noises,

He took it home tonight because its being playing up over the past week and yesterday it refused to boot xp. He tried the recovery console himself and im not sure what he did but upon starting the computer up xp immediately jumps into "reinstalling windows" at the install stage. It gets down to 33 minutes and the computer restarts and repeats the whole process. I cant format the drive as theres important work on it and im not going to be able to take my computer home till next weekend. I was hoping someone could offer an alternative solution to a format?

Let's see... I'm running a Pentium 4 (1.7 GHz) on an Intel D845GBV motherboard, with 512 MB of RAM. As for the operating system, I'm running Windows XP SP1, build 2600. I generally make it a point to keep up with Windows Update. I have both a BIOS password and a Windows password on my computer. About one out of every ten times I boot I run into problems: I enter my BIOS password with no problems, but then when Windows starts up I lose USB support. Nothing I've done has fixed the problem, which includes unplugging the keyboard (or the Biopod USB biometric scanner I have) and plugging it back up, checking the drivers, making sure I have the latest updates, and scanning for viruses/malware. A restart is the only thing that resolves the problem.

Yesterday while surfing on my mother's laptop all of a sudden it just froze. I just turned it off because after hitting control/alt/delete nothing happened. I was stuck. Then I restarted the laptop - the windows logo came on along with sound and then it went to a black screen with just a blinking cursor at the upper top left. It will not take me to her desktop.

My computer started acting up, and I couldn't play any games.WoW mainly -(Yes I play it) and Cod4, So finally I managed to fix it myself and this is what I did. Went into device manager, disabled then enabled my GFX card, Then I have to go into display properties and change 3D acceleration to 0 then back to full, Also when I do this it corrects my resolution.
However, EVERY time I power down my computer, I have to do this which get's very annoying

When i start my windows XP proffessional a lot of programs are started like yahoo messenger etc and it takes lot of time for eac of these to load. So i tried "msconfig" to customize which programs to start when the system boots. But each time i start i get a message from "msconfig" program that " this is not the normal startup and suggests to revert back to normal start up (which starts all the progs).I want only specific programs to start when i my computer starts.
1)Is there a better way to change this apart from "msconfig" ?
2) How can i avoid that message that mscofig gives?
3) Are there any other problems i want only selective programs to start ?

I don't know how this happened. But when I went to my D drive which is My Documents, the drive was empty. Though when I check the drive properties it shows that 18G is being used, plus it's showing that the file system is RAW. Not sure how it got that way because it should be NTFS. I am able to view My Pictures and My Music by viewing from the start menu and going to My Pictures or My Music, but when I go to My Documents it's empty.
Now my question is how do I recover those missing files? I'm assuming that they are around because My Pictures and My Music are two of the files that are in my documents folder. This just leaves 25% of the drive I can't view. I can't do system restore because I don't have the D drive being monitored, so I can't do that. I did a virus scan and a spyware scan and the system is clean. Another thing I noticed is if I try to save something to the D drive it will appear to be the only item on the drive, but when I click refresh it will vanish.

I am trying to get a computer to output the same thing to at least two seperate monitors. All I can seem to manage to do is get an extended desktop, which means I can drag things off of my screen onto the other monitor instead of displaying the same thing on both monitors which is what I am trying to do. When I uncheck the "Extend my windows desktop to this computer" on another display it disables the monitor, and when I enable the display it automatically checks it.
In this Compaq (I know Compaq sucks) computer I have 2 video cards. One onboard, and one PCI. The PCI video card has 2 outputs, the onboard has one. I have reached a point where in Windows XP I can output to 3 seperate monitors utilizing the extended desktop feature, which means I am outputting from the PCI video card and the onboard video card. In order to do this I used a microsoft work around in which you must disable hardware acceleration on each driver.

This all started when my computer was shutting down at random times when I was in windows...at first I thought it was my CPU because it was just shutting down when I was playing games... but I no longer think this because it started shutting down when I was just in windows.Anyway so my friend and I started working on it...we thought it was the mild overclock we put on a few weeks earlier. However, my temps were normal and it passed the stress tests we did on it through the BIOS...So we changed the settings back to stock. No luck.Problem not solved. In fact, now we can't stay in windows for more than a couple seconds before it re-boots.

When XP Pro was functional I had 4 partitions on my 30 gig laptop drive in the following order as the appeared physically on the disk:
1: C: - a 2 gig dos partition for ancient non xp emulation compatible software
2: A linux partition for a common distro
3: the swap partition for the linux distro
4: E: - a 14 gig xp pro ntfs partition with my xp pro system files on it..
Now I believe my CD-ROM was using D: at this time for some reason or another... I don't quite remember for sure, but I am 100% positive that my system part was on E:
So I grab paragon partition manager and wipe the linux partition and merge it with the E: partition.. I must have really messed something up in the merge because it ended up changing my e: system part to d:. So now the system goes all the way through the first windows xp splash screen and hangs on the second one, after it loads the gui and before it provides the login prompt. I've set up a BartPE disk so that I could load the hkey_local_user hive to rename the mounted drives, but I must be doing something wrong because it saves the changes i make to the mounted drive d: to e: but it does not actually change the name of the mounted drive... it's still showing up as D:.. I have not tried a repair install because I assume it will not work due to the fact that it will detect the windows OS on d: and will probably just correct the OS and not any of the applications installed. Instead of attempting this I would rather blow away the part and start over from scratch which I will when I get tired of fooling with this.

I seem to be having problems as of late with my computer. for the past 10-15 days when I startup my computer sometimes Windows will load and other times it won't. I don't even get the privledge of the blue screen of death, but rather then brown green screen saying Windows failed to start. Usually it takes 3-4 tries before Windows successfully loads, but it seems to be getting progressively worse. I haven't installed any new software or modifiied any configuration details within the last 30days. I even tried a system restore point of about a month ago and I continue to have this problem.
I threw in my XP cd for a re-install but it says my version of windows is newer then the one on the cd, and after thinking about it, if this is a serious problem, having to re-install windows, all of my drivers for my 3rd party hardware and then update everything might not be worth the effort if I can just get a new computer. I have been pondering for a while of purchasing a mac for my next round of computer purchases so if it comes down to that, hardware and software costs from my current system are not a major issue. So is my computer just slowly dying like a used car, or what might be the problem?

I bought a computer for my wife and kids. Well months go by and my wife tries to install something and notices that the MAIN drive is H: not C:
I figured that it was weird but no big deal. Well I purchased a printer for her and while trying to install the software it was giving me a "Windows - No Disk in Drive" error.
I did some research and spoke to HP tech support and they suggested that I search the web for a way to change the drive letters from H: (current hard drive) to C: (supposed to be default drive)

I run windows xp and use the silver color scheme instead of the default (blue) color scheme. i started up my pc and windows had returned to the default color scheme so i restarted my pc and it was back to the silver scheme. All was well for a few weeks when it did the same thing agin. After restarting this time and i was back to the silver color scheme, all was well until this morning when i started my pc and it was back to the default blue so i restarted and it was still at the default blue.
I went to my display properties and manually set it back to the silver scheme, clicked on apply then ok and restarted my pc.Now it was back to the silver scheme. What could be the reason for this.I run spybot,ad-aware,spyblaster and microsoft anti-spyware and i also run ez-armor antivirus.I scan my pc everyday for spyware before i shutdown and i do regular virus scans and nothing is very often found as far as spyware except a tracking cookie once in awhile and never any viruses

I changed from a dial-up connection to cable (Road Runner). Since then, my search engines have changed (when I search from the IE address bar, it uses MSN search now), and many pages that load, although faster, have the message "error on page" at the bottom. Outlook Express became my default email with the Road Runner email address, but most of the time it does not respond. Also, several games are slow to respond or do not respond at all (specifically CSI games and Hunting Unlimited). I run adaware and spybot at least once a week if not more, and defrag regularly. Are there extra precautions I should take with a cable connection?
