System Never Starts Up
Feb 5, 2008I have a Gateway laptop that will not start up. All it says is Gateway and gives the F2 and F10 option that don't work.

Changed System Language - System Wont Starts Now
Aug 24, 2005I bought a new laptop about 2 weeks ago. It's a Compaq Presario (? if that helps). my grilfriend is Swedish so wanted the language in Swedish. No problem. But the computer keeps restarting a few times a day without any notice. I had a look everywhere on every forum (almost) and read about this Zotob worm that turns your comp off all the time. So, from the microsoft web page i did the PC check thing, and it says it found nothing, but i downloaded the patch or something just in case, and it said it won't install because the language is in Swedish, and i only works in English. So firstly, do i have the worm thing?

Oct 27, 2009I turned my pc on today which runs on Windows XP Pro. Every time the computer starts I get four or five options Safe Mode, Safe mode with Prompt, Last well know configuration, etc (most ppl know what I mean here.)
Every time I click on any of the modes my computer restarts. Just before the pc restarts I see a blue screen quickly flash (i know this is know as the 'blue screen of death'.)
I have put in my XP cd but i cant get it to run so i use recovery not even when I run it from my BIOS Screen
Missing Hal.dll - System Does Not Starts
Aug 3, 2007You see the problem is that when I start up my computer to Windows XP i recieve an error before the boot screen appears stating:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:<Windows root>system32hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file."This is not my first site i visited to try to find a solution. I have been to many explaining all different types of solutions. Luckly I am a pretty experienced computer person and also a technician, so I have a fighting chance to try to restore my pc to the proper condition.

Jun 11, 2008Every time I start up my computer and goes to the desktop, there are no icons, toolbars, or even the "Start" button, it only shows the desktop background, and all I can use is the Task Manager to access a couple of programs. I tried using Norton Antivirus, but did not find anything, so I uninstalled it. My "CPU Usage" is at 0 and 1% almost dead, I saw that the explorer.exe is missing. I ran it with the Task Manager, and it made the computer reboot the wrong way. When it did, it did not go to the desktop it just showed black screen with the little "-" on the top left and couldn't do anything and the buffer is barely doing anything, you know, when you open a program, the light flashes rapidly and making noises,

Nov 18, 2006He took it home tonight because its being playing up over the past week and yesterday it refused to boot xp. He tried the recovery console himself and im not sure what he did but upon starting the computer up xp immediately jumps into "reinstalling windows" at the install stage. It gets down to 33 minutes and the computer restarts and repeats the whole process. I cant format the drive as theres important work on it and im not going to be able to take my computer home till next weekend. I was hoping someone could offer an alternative solution to a format?

Sep 20, 2005Let's see... I'm running a Pentium 4 (1.7 GHz) on an Intel D845GBV motherboard, with 512 MB of RAM. As for the operating system, I'm running Windows XP SP1, build 2600. I generally make it a point to keep up with Windows Update. I have both a BIOS password and a Windows password on my computer. About one out of every ten times I boot I run into problems: I enter my BIOS password with no problems, but then when Windows starts up I lose USB support. Nothing I've done has fixed the problem, which includes unplugging the keyboard (or the Biopod USB biometric scanner I have) and plugging it back up, checking the drivers, making sure I have the latest updates, and scanning for viruses/malware. A restart is the only thing that resolves the problem.

Aug 19, 2009My computer started acting up, and I couldn't play any games.WoW mainly -(Yes I play it) and Cod4, So finally I managed to fix it myself and this is what I did. Went into device manager, disabled then enabled my GFX card, Then I have to go into display properties and change 3D acceleration to 0 then back to full, Also when I do this it corrects my resolution.
However, EVERY time I power down my computer, I have to do this which get's very annoying
Blue Screen Every Time System Starts Up
Sep 20, 2008I've been getting an error/blue screen message when ever i start up my Acer Aspire 5650 laptop. It is a couple of years old now and,my last laptop died after about the same time so hopefully someone can shed some light.The system will start up and i can use the it with out any trouble but it is anoying to have to sit for up to 5 - 10 minutes while it runs the check every time.

Feb 6, 2007When i start my windows XP proffessional a lot of programs are started like yahoo messenger etc and it takes lot of time for eac of these to load. So i tried "msconfig" to customize which programs to start when the system boots.But each time i start i get a message from "msconfig" program that " this is not the normal startup and suggests to revert back to normal start up (which starts all the progs).I want only specific programs to start when i my computer starts.
1)Is there a better way to change this apart from "msconfig" ?
2) How can i avoid that message that mscofig gives?
3) Are there any other problems i want only selective programs to start ?
Computer Some Times Starts - Some Times Doesn't - System Restore Point
Apr 10, 2006I seem to be having problems as of late with my computer. for the past 10-15 days when I startup my computer sometimes Windows will load and other times it won't. I don't even get the privledge of the blue screen of death, but rather then brown green screen saying Windows failed to start. Usually it takes 3-4 tries before Windows successfully loads, but it seems to be getting progressively worse. I haven't installed any new software or modifiied any configuration details within the last 30days. I even tried a system restore point of about a month ago and I continue to have this problem.
I threw in my XP cd for a re-install but it says my version of windows is newer then the one on the cd, and after thinking about it, if this is a serious problem, having to re-install windows, all of my drivers for my 3rd party hardware and then update everything might not be worth the effort if I can just get a new computer. I have been pondering for a while of purchasing a mac for my next round of computer purchases so if it comes down to that, hardware and software costs from my current system are not a major issue. So is my computer just slowly dying like a used car, or what might be the problem?
Starts Up / Crashes Right Away
Oct 21, 2005my system has been acting up today. I got home from class and tried to install my Microsoft Visual Studio, it asked me to restart after the installation. When I did, right when it got to the desktop it said something about a registry problem has been restored and the system has been recovered. Something along those lines. Getting back on the subject, 5 seconds after it reaches the desktop it crashes. Not a hard crash, just a restart, but it crashes none-the-less. Is there a way to get around this without reformatting?(I even tried running in Safe Mode, same problem.) I can't seem to find a way to fix it if I can't even get to my desktop.

Apr 16, 2007A couple of weeks ago I downloaded latest windows update and rebooted as instructed. Only the PC kept rebooting itself continuously. When I stopped it with F8 and set it not to restart on errors I got a critical windows error message. I reformatted drive and reinstalled windows, all was fine for a couple of days, then here is the really wierd thing. I heard the fan spinning but neither I nor Lady Walsh had turned the PC on. I once again found it rebooting itself in a continuous loop. Seems it turned itself on from standby and corrupted windows again. I totally wiped the disc, reformatted both partitions and reinstalled windows. Did a full Norton antivirus scan which came up clean. But the same happened again yesterday. Anyone heard of a virus that can start your PC up from standby and reinstall itself ? And that can survive a disc fomat and windows re-installation? I'm running XP Sp2 on an AMD64 with 1 Gb RAM 120 Gb disc.

Apr 25, 2008when my windows xp boots up...everything starts up except that the yahoo and msn messengers as well as the broadband connection dialin link doesnt works till like a minute or so after windows has got booted...it seems like the windows waits for something to load for about a minute and then after a minute the hard drive shows some activity and yahoo,msn and the broadband link comes up and i can only dial the link then...this 1 minute wait for the connection to be connected is really annoying me...from the task manager i c that 2 services imapi.exe,alg.exe and wmiserve.exe starts up after the freezing time of the windows and then net connection gets connected...if u want any more details i will let you know.

I only see my desktop background.Well, I reset the computer pushing the button on the PC. I load Windows XP on fail-safe mode and login as Adminitrator. Everthing goes well.Then, I reboot Windows by software to start Windows as the usual way. Then, I login on my session and it works well, I have no explorer crash and I can work.But this is not the key to solve the error because it returns to happen.

Nov 15, 2006I used at work, BartPE burned CD and a formatted USB thumbdrive (which I did not create) to boot my CPU's and it installed an "image" of windows XP onto the drive using Norton Ghost and everything thing moves great.I have read that most imaging software can be used to do this with BartPE. What I have not figured out yet though is how and where you put the image in BartPE when you do the "build" and then make it start ghost or the 'image' upon bootup in the cpu.

Since they have dial-up only, it was 3 hours and only at 21%, I decided to just shut it down.So now.............how do I stop the updates altogether? They rarely are on the net, they use it for work only, and since their computer runs fine, I can't see allocating that much down-time from their workday to upload the updates.

Starts Up Fine NO Program Will Run
Sep 19, 2005My friend was installing Norton and it froze half way thru and she ended up having to restart. When she restarted her computer (with WIN XP HOME EDITION) it loaded fine but now with a new problem. No program will load. I cant load Word, AIM, anything. I tried to do a system restore, but i cant open the program to do that. I cant explore the hard drive because that program wont open. I cant access the control panel either. The only thing that seems to work is IE, which is useless. I got the XP cd and performed a repair, but the problem did not change. I assumed there was something wrong with the registry, but i cant run regedit. Everytime I try to open a program I get a message that says "this file does not have a program associated with it for preforming this action" For some reason, no program will load, yet the computer starts up fine.
