View 3 RepliesI have recently had a major system failure, specifically my Windows XP will no longer fully boot. When I power on my computer, it gets to the "windows had
a problem starting up" page, where it gives options for starting in safe mode, normal mode, etc. However, no matter which option I choose, the computer cycles through startup and comes back to this same page. I have tried hitting F8 and getting to the advanced options, but I get the same result. Nothing I try works. I suspect there are corrupted sectors in the core system somewhere.
My computer will not start up. It boots and and gets to a screen where it asks if I want to start windows normally. I do that and then the window xp logo appears and then it reboots and starts all over again. Right after the window xp logo appears something runs across the screen and disappears to fast to see what it is.I have norton internet and antivirus and the sp2 pack of windows xp installed. However, I have not installed anything recently. Just prior to the problem my comcast high speed internet went down and when it came on that is when I had the problem. I can boot from the CD-rom and have done a check with a cdrom norton and I have no viruses, but it is not the latest viruses on the disk and I dont know how to down load them onto the cdrom from norton site.

black startup screen where I can hit del. to enter setup then to another black screen that cycles through the list and the last thing is says is 'verifying dmi pool data' Then the little white bar scrolls across the bottom from left to right Then the Windows screen comes up and the little blue progress dots cycle through
Although I am running Windows ME I could not find a group listed for that OS so I assumed that for this problem XP is comparable(?). The problem is that for some reason on startup my computer wants the run scandisk. There seems o be a problem with scandisk because about three-quarters of the way throught the sacn it locks up. If I cancel the scandisk my computer seems to be acting OK but if I don't hover over the computer on startup I have to do a hard reboot

I wanted to start fresh and the recovery system for windows gives me only a limited number of dates. I thought that the Viao recovery would do the job.I was wrong. I haven't checked recent forums about problems with this, so I went ahead and broke my laptop. Before the Recovery system starts, my laptop says, with a black background.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI bought a new laptop about 2 weeks ago. It's a Compaq Presario (? if that helps). my grilfriend is Swedish so wanted the language in Swedish. No problem. But the computer keeps restarting a few times a day without any notice. I had a look everywhere on every forum (almost) and read about this Zotob worm that turns your comp off all the time. So, from the microsoft web page i did the PC check thing, and it says it found nothing, but i downloaded the patch or something just in case, and it said it won't install because the language is in Swedish, and i only works in English. So firstly, do i have the worm thing?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a toshiba laptop. It was working fine. I think my daughter shut it down wrong. Now it opens to the menu to select Normal, Safe Mode, etc. No matter what I pick it begins to start, gets past the Windows logo screen and then a blue screen flashes up and it restarts before you can ever read the letters on the blue screen. It just keeps cycling. Will not start. I am on XP sp2. Can't tell much else since I cannot even figure out how to get it started. I have removed the battery for 5 minutes and pulled the power cord.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOn an MSI P7N SLI Platinum motherboard, dual booting Windows XP and Vista - I mainly use XP - here also, this happened on XP. Ever since I updated Java Runtime Environment to 6 Update 10, jqsnotify - the Java Quickstart process, automatically starts up after some interval and consumes 25% of my CPu's cycles, - thats one core basically. Soon, there are 4 instances of this process - using up all my CPU power. I can close them down from the task manager - but when I'm playing a game- it suddenly slows down and I know what's happening but its frankly very irritating.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to log on the dialog box cycles through "retrieving user settings"... "logging off"... "saving user settings"... and then returns me to a log in screen. The log in screen is more like an NT screen with fields for user ID and password rather than the XP screen with a button for my users. I have tried my ID, "XP" and "Administrator" with similar results. I installed xp service pack 2 about a week ago. Just before this occured the computer reported "lost or damaged clusters on startup and I allowed it to go through the repair process. The only file listed as damaged had nothing to do with start up [thumbs.db in my pictures]
View 2 Replies View RelatedAs of late, upon realizing that my system is unbearably slow, I've noticed via the task manager that msmsgs is sometimes eating up 98-99% of my CPU cycles. One time it was Norton AntiVirus, but every other time msmsgs. What I've done:I've run Ad-aware SE full scan and found only tracking cookies (deleted them).I've run Spybot S&D and only found tracking cookies (deleted them).I've run Windows Defender on full scan, pretty much the same.I've run NAV full system scan and found no viruses.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI turned my pc on today which runs on Windows XP Pro. Every time the computer starts I get four or five options Safe Mode, Safe mode with Prompt, Last well know configuration, etc (most ppl know what I mean here.)
Every time I click on any of the modes my computer restarts. Just before the pc restarts I see a blue screen quickly flash (i know this is know as the 'blue screen of death'.)
I have put in my XP cd but i cant get it to run so i use recovery not even when I run it from my BIOS Screen
You see the problem is that when I start up my computer to Windows XP i recieve an error before the boot screen appears stating:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:<Windows root>system32hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file."This is not my first site i visited to try to find a solution. I have been to many explaining all different types of solutions. Luckly I am a pretty experienced computer person and also a technician, so I have a fighting chance to try to restore my pc to the proper condition.
Every time I start up my computer and goes to the desktop, there are no icons, toolbars, or even the "Start" button, it only shows the desktop background, and all I can use is the Task Manager to access a couple of programs. I tried using Norton Antivirus, but did not find anything, so I uninstalled it. My "CPU Usage" is at 0 and 1% almost dead, I saw that the explorer.exe is missing. I ran it with the Task Manager, and it made the computer reboot the wrong way. When it did, it did not go to the desktop it just showed black screen with the little "-" on the top left and couldn't do anything and the buffer is barely doing anything, you know, when you open a program, the light flashes rapidly and making noises,

It gets down to 33 minutes and the computer restarts and repeats the whole process. I cant format the drive as theres important work on it and im not going to be able to take my computer home till next weekend. I was hoping someone could offer an alternative solution to a format?
View 6 Replies View RelatedLet's see... I'm running a Pentium 4 (1.7 GHz) on an Intel D845GBV motherboard, with 512 MB of RAM. As for the operating system, I'm running Windows XP SP1, build 2600. I generally make it a point to keep up with Windows Update. I have both a BIOS password and a Windows password on my computer. About one out of every ten times I boot I run into problems: I enter my BIOS password with no problems, but then when Windows starts up I lose USB support. Nothing I've done has fixed the problem, which includes unplugging the keyboard (or the Biopod USB biometric scanner I have) and plugging it back up, checking the drivers, making sure I have the latest updates, and scanning for viruses/malware. A restart is the only thing that resolves the problem.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba Satellite notebook (about 18 months to two years old) running XP Pro, and frequently I encounter a situation where, with no programs running, explorer.exe "cycles" in activity and CPU usage - for example, from 30,000 K Memory Usage to 50,000 K to 70,000 K to 90,000 K (over the course of 10 seconds or so), then drops back down to 30 or 40,000K and starts over.

So i tried "msconfig" to customize which programs to start when the system boots. But each time i start i get a message from "msconfig" program that " this is not the normal startup and suggests to revert back to normal start up (which starts all the progs).I want only specific programs to start when i my computer starts.
1)Is there a better way to change this apart from "msconfig" ?
2) How can i avoid that message that mscofig gives?
3) Are there any other problems i want only selective programs to start ?
I seem to be having problems as of late with my computer. for the past 10-15 days when I startup my computer sometimes Windows will load and other times it won't. I don't even get the privledge of the blue screen of death, but rather then brown green screen saying Windows failed to start. Usually it takes 3-4 tries before Windows successfully loads, but it seems to be getting progressively worse. I haven't installed any new software or modifiied any configuration details within the last 30days. I even tried a system restore point of about a month ago and I continue to have this problem.
I threw in my XP cd for a re-install but it says my version of windows is newer then the one on the cd, and after thinking about it, if this is a serious problem, having to re-install windows, all of my drivers for my 3rd party hardware and then update everything might not be worth the effort if I can just get a new computer. I have been pondering for a while of purchasing a mac for my next round of computer purchases so if it comes down to that, hardware and software costs from my current system are not a major issue. So is my computer just slowly dying like a used car, or what might be the problem?
i rescently had to format the drive for a fresh copy. I have installed xp home retail version and realised i wanted to try something diferent. At system start the computer starts up prior to the windows boot screen and displays COMPAQ in big bright bold letters with option of F10 for system restore which is no longer on system (reformated) as well as other options for boot select pres ESC and F1 for setup. Can i remove this from my system? and then can i create a menu with 2 options 1 load windows normaly and 2 install a disk image stored on a hidden partition? maybe like the F10 key assighn that to access the imge and install it.
When I start the laptop, the first black screen loads, and then directly skips to an error message saying "Windows cannot start because the Windows/system32/ config/system file is either corrupt or missing." Then it prompts you to try to load Windows using the installation CD.which I do not have! Whoever's reading this, PLEASE please help me, the laptop's like, my life, and I haven't had the common sense to back up anything
View 12 Replies View RelatedWhenever I start my computer up, the C:WINDOWSsystem32 folder opens up.. everytime! I have looked at several forums to try to fix my problem, and I have tried the fix at this website: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm (line 260) and this is the message that came up:"the script cannot repair your issue. The expected Registry value was not found."I have no idea what to do.. I read on one forum that the guy had to basically clean off his hard drive and re install it! I REALLY don't want to have to go through that.. especially since I'm a college student, and finals are coming up.. the last thing I need is to be without my own computer. I have searched on this site for forums pertaining to this subject, but I haven't found any.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am currently running XP on my system. About three days ago, my system suddenly started taking longer to boot. The extra boot time comes in the form of a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left, where my system does not appear to be doing anything. This screen appears immediately before the Windows XP loading screen. I have tried Tweak XP utilities to try and speed up my startup. Failing that, I tried a system restore to a few days prior to this strange occurrance. Every time I try to run system restore, however, I am confronted with an error upon startup that tells me that system restore was unsuccessful. I have tried a variety of system restore dates, and all have been unsuccessful. I have tried sweeps with Spysweeper and Norton, and neither have brought any more insight into this problem.
