I have a Toshiba Satellite notebook (about 18 months to two years old) running XP Pro, and frequently I encounter a situation where, with no programs running, explorer.exe "cycles" in activity and CPU usage - for example, from 30,000 K Memory Usage to 50,000 K to 70,000 K to 90,000 K (over the course of 10 seconds or so), then drops back down to 30 or 40,000K and starts over.

View 7 Replies View RelatedAlright this is really damn annyoying, the pc runs incredibly slow, when I look in task manager, explorer.exe is using 97% of the CPU, so I end the proccess and start a new one, then winlogon.exe runs at 97% CPU usage and this proccess can't be ended, and I noticed there are multiple "svchost.exe" about 5 actually, I even reinstalled the operating system about 3 times and the computer still has the problem. I looked all over the internet and I can't find anything that can solve this. I have the log from HijackThis:

I'm running XP pro SP2. I have a gig of ram and my mother board is an Intel D101GGC. My CPU is Intel Pentium D 920.
If I use Windows Explorer to go deeper than the first level of any tree, CPU usage goes to 100% and stays there. I've disabled System Restore because it wouldn't let me go back in time anyway and this program is a known resource gobbler. Didn't help. I've attached a hijackthis logfile to see if anyone recognizes a Trojan, etc. I would appreciate any help at all.
I'm running XP on a computer with 1.3 gig CPU, 768MB RAM and 60 gig HD. My CPU usage is typically about 25-40%, but if I want to link to a video clip online and run it, CPU usage goes to 100% and the video won't run.I had a bad browser hijacker in May which took 10 days to fix with Tech guy help and me learning along the way, and a small problem in August, again fixed through advice from TechGuy, which I really appreciated.However, I have another teen living with us now, who says that my CPU usage should only be about 5%.Could someone help me decide what I layers of protection I can do without or how to configure all the anti-everything software I have that was recommended in May? I did a system restore to a week ago when I did not have this problem, but this did not help. Did a spyware scan with Spybot and Ad Aware, again no help. Did a virus scan with TrendMicro, no help again.

Ran Hijackthis, spybot, and updated and ran antivirus - with no problems found. started in safe mode and CPU usage was at 1%. If you open up any program, the CPU usage immeaditely goes from like 0 to 100% and occassionally it will shut down and restart. Such times are when I try to run ad-aware or AVG. It will shoot up to 100%, maybe run for a minute then restart the computer. I cant even delete some files because it just restarts before they delete. It immidiately starts this whenever I just turn the computer on, and I hear it because the sound that Windows makes at startup gets scratchy and stutters. Straight out of the box, the cpu usage when idle was at around 3%, then i uninstalled all the dell junk programs. Somewhere down the line, the cpu idle shot to 35%. The programs that are causing this are csrss.exe and spoolsv.exe, each taking up about 17 cpu each. When i end spoolsv.exe, I notice that my csrss.exe cpu usage will increase. I reinstalled my windows OS and it seemed fine until the next day, these two processes started acting up again. I don't know what else to do, and i'm sure these processes aren't viruses.

Evidently, I had the nail.exe file, in addition to others. After 12 days, they gave it back to me, completely clean (according to them), with Norton Internet Security installed - in the process they lost all my e-mail files, but oh well. Anyway, I haven't had the darn thing back 2 weeks and I'm getting 100% CPU usage, with explorer.exe being the main hog. When I delete it in the processes list, the CPU usage goes down to 4%. I really don't want to take this thing back to BB for them to keep for another 2 weeks.
